Friday Caps Clips: Cloture in Ottawa; Ducks @ Capitals Game Day

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’s win from us, Vogs, Monumental video (Trotz, Kuznetsov, Holtby, Orpik, Ovechkin), NHL.com, WaPo (gamer, blog), CSNW (gamer, blog), AP, Frankovic, Peerless, DSP (recap, three stars), RMNB, and from the other end of the ice, Silver Seven and Sun Media.
    • Congratulations were in order for Chris Phillips, who played in his 1,179th game in an Ottawa sweater and officially became the longest-serving Senator. [PHT, NHL.com]
    • Alex Ovechkin notched a gorgeously greasy gritty gamewinning goalscorer’s goal and brought his physical game along on the roadie… [RMNB, and again, Eye on Hockey]
    • … and still managed to charm the Ottawa press… [Ottawa Citizen]
    • … and also he will make you pay. [Sportsnet]
    • Erik Karlsson kicks sticks and Barry Trotz‘s eyebrows have got it going on. [6th Sens]
    • Do the Racing Prime Ministers look a bit… familiar? [RMNB]
    • Cue up the Jan Hammer and pour yourself a shot or two of Bacardi as Alan May invites us to revisit the salad days of Home Team Sports and the unstructured side of Joe Beninati. [CSNW]
    • And from Elias (think Braden Holtby has been any good lately?): Braden Holtby, who made 25 saves in his 2-1 victory against the Senators on Thursday, has posted a 3-0-1 record over his last four starts and allowed only two goals while facing a total of 110 shots on goal in those four games. Holtby is the first Capitals goaltender to allow no more than two goals over a four-start span in one season since Jim Carey did so in March/April 1996.
  • Previews of tonight’s pas de deux with the Ducks from Vogs (plus game notes), NHL.com, Peerless, and be sure to check out our SB Nation pals over at Anaheim Calling for the other side of tonight’s matchup.
    • Kenny Reiter, a goalie whose most recent gigs have been with the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers and ECHL Reading Royals, has signed a tryout contract with the Hershey Bears, whose two fully healthy tendys practiced with the team yesterday. [Patriot-News, NBC4]
  • News and notes from yesterday’s pregame skate:
  • Today in “Trade Mike Green “:
    • The rumors, they swirl, and Green may be upping his game. [WaPo]
    • Or maybe he’ll take a hometown discount. Maybe. [CSNW]
  • “There may be superior players to call upon when protecting a lead, but Ovechkin is the man everybody wants on the ice when they’re chasing one.” ESPN selects the best 29-year-old NHLer. [ESPN $]
  • And for balance, here’s Brooks Orpik as one of six “most overrated” players. [FTW]
  • In Hershey, forward Tim Kennedy is slated to take at least part of the weekend off as his wife will be delivering their twins… [Patriot-News]
  • Finally, happy birthday to Bob Sirois, who celebrates the big 6-0 today.
