Capitals/Canadiens: By The Numbers
And so it's set.
Caps vs. Habs. Red, white and blue vs. bleu, blanc et rouge. Ryan Walter and Rick Green for Rod Langway, Craig Laughlin, Doug Jarvis and Brian Engblom. Alex Ovechkin's best game as an NHLer. "The Sequel". Jose Theodore's return to La Belle Province looking to add to his Masterton credentials by overcoming one of the toughest crowds in hockey... and his past.
There'll be plenty of time to dive into those storylines and others in the days ahead, but first things first - the numbers. Below are the Caps team and individual stats (after the jump) from this season against the Canadiens.

not that it matters ( or that i expected anything else)
but i think Montreal is the worst matchup for the caps out of all the teams in the playoffs. Not super stoked about this one.
No Worries
Caps in four. MTL sucks and WSH won’t be screwing around like they were for so much of the regular season.

considering
how woeful the caps PK has been, and that MTL has a very good PP, and then put this in a glass and mix it with the caps luck with officiating the playoffs – and you get plenty of bad feelings from me
I think that the Caps will kill the Habs at evens so yeah, the PK is a worry but Ovechkin is about 10 times better than any players the Habs have.

As strong as our 5v5 is, the biggest problem will be the penalties.
If the officiating stays like it has the past few weeks, the noticeably small Montreal team could possibly get tons of penalties against us. Then potentially rip us apart with Power-Play.
If we play with alot of discipline, and dont get screwed by the officiating, i could see this game going 5 games
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
This is my big concern. The officiating has been lopsided lately, and not in the Caps’ favor. Some of that is on the Caps, but not all of it. I have no expectations that that trend will not continue.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Keep in mind two things -
1) The Caps’ PK numbers are bad but they don’t take a ton of penalties. So while the percentage is awful we’re not talking about that many goals against (if they don’t improve…they’ve looked better to me in the last week or so). Any doubt the Caps can’t overcome one goal a game?
2) The Habs’ PP, while 2nd in the League, is like the Caps – it runs hot and cold, and oddly enough it’s been awful since Cammalleri got back into the lineup.
And as in any series the key will be to stay disciplined. There isn’t a new level of urgency to this rule just because our opponent’s PP is good.
The NHL HATES Ovie, therefore, the Caps.
I thought it was just Against Pit, but it was SOOOO evident today. I think were in trouble from the hand of Zeus himself. But, I still have faith!

How amazingly f’d up is it that the Flyers/Rangers was decided in a shootout?! If that isn’t a sign that you need to get rid of it, I don’t know what is.
Whoever did and had money riding on it, won big. I envy that rich man …

I wouldn't have.
But that has to be the most significant shoot-out in history no?
And what a final game for Kerry Fraser.
The Isles clinched a playoff berth in game #82 a few seasons ago, I believe.

Yeah but it’s not the same as two teams head to head.
I think all the Shootouts deciding playoffs talk is way overblown. You have 82 games to get enough points. If you are still fighting for points on the 82nd game that’s on you. Both PHI and NYR had opportunities to lock it up long ago.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
That and if the game had just ended in a tie Philly would have made the playoffs over the Rangers anyway. The only difference would be that Philly would be 8th and Montreal 7th.

Exactly. Then he basically told Carcillo “easy – I don’t want to call a penalty on you now,” and Carcillo chilled out. That’s a good/ballsy referee.
I’m not always a fan of his tendency to even out talent disparities with his whistle, but he’s not alone in that – it’s league-wide.

yea, there was a scrum in the final say 15 seconds of OT or the third period I forget.

Ovi certainly didn’t seem to be too concerned today. Far more interested in feeding Greenie. Really don’t think that Ovi cares about this. He just wanted the 50. And I concur with that completely.
We probably cared more. Just please, not Crosby, make it Stamkos if it can’t be a three way tie.

You’d be surprised. They’re pretty brutal – I love ‘em to death, don’t get me wrong, but Habs fans can be nasty.
The bigger worry, though, is the media. I remember last year (?) there was a huge article in one of the papers about Price and the Montreal goaltending legacy. In the article they talked to some former goalies, then mentioned a few who refused to talk about their Montreal experience – Jose was one of them.
Alright, I’m done being nervous. Time to rock.

I hope Theo stops every god damn shot those POS’s throw his way. No respect for Montreal at all. They disrespect their own players beyond rationality and they boo our national anthem, or at least have many times in the past. I hope “Canada Killer” Carlson methodically destroys each and every one of them. I hope OV scores 5 goals every game and then proceeds to hit every Canadien on the ice so hard that they can’t see straight. I hope chimera crashes the net so hard that halak ends up in the 3rd row of the stands with a stick shoved up his arse. We will sweep them, beat them, embarass them, emasculate them, batter them, and unleash the fury on them. We will break them. We are the Persdients Trophy Winner. We are the best team in the NHL. We are the greatest offensive machine on earth. We are the Washington Capitals. We are the next Stanley Cup Championships. So Montreal, roll over and die or prepare to be annihilated.

Calgary and Vancouver have still both done it. Look, if it’s bulletin board material, that’s fine, but different fan bases do different things.

Enh, it’s the playoffs. I think we ought to have a contest with the Canadiens fans – who’s got the louder building. Kind of like the Moose / Bears series last year where the Moose coach was trash-talking about Hershey fans and Hershey’s response was to play the clip of the trash-talk in the stadium. The response was … something else.

1) You can fare any better than the Badgers
Uh… did you miss a game the other night. I think we could fair quite a bit better than the Badgers.
Considering we are also facing an undersized but speedy team it seems a particularly unfortunate comparison.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Pardon?
Uh… did you miss a game the other night.
Which night? Which game? The one where Wisconsin lost?
I think we could fair quite a bit better than the Badgers. Considering we are also facing an undersized but speedy team it seems a particularly unfortunate comparison.
I wasn’t making any comparisons between the Badgers and some other NHL team in the playoffs, much less the Capitals if that’s what you were assuming from my comments. I was just making some offhand remark about playoff mustaches as opposed to beards in general.
I happened to find it quite amusing that the decision by Wisconsin players to sport mustaches in the hopes of helping them fare better in the NCAA tournament didn’t exactly help them that much more than sporting a beard would. But, it sure did help more than a few of the players in raising their game in the personal creepiness department. That is all …
Enter the mustaches.
"It’s a part of hockey tradition to grow playoff beards," junior goaltender Scott Gudmandson said. "My first couple years here, we did the beards and it didn’t really work out. We thought we’d change it up and do something a little different, see if mustaches would be lucky this year."
"Every other year we’ve gone with the beard and we haven’t really done too well with it," senior forward Ben Grotting agreed. "Playoffs come around and you’ve been doing the same thing all year. You want to do something different, something as a team, so that’s where it all stems from."
While growing beards is a part of hockey tradition, mustaches are a little different. Still, none of the Badgers hesitated to join their teammates in growing a ’stache for the playoffs.
"Everybody hopped right on board to do it as a team thing, do a little team bonding as we headed into the playoffs," Gudmandson said.
"It was kind of a collective idea," Grotting explained. "We did a team vote on whether to do beards or mustaches. It was a unanimous vote in favor of mustaches."
…
Whether the team mustaches were inspired by Mitchell’s facial hair or by playoff excitement, no one knows. However, one thing for sure is that the Badgers are all about having a little fun during their exciting postseason run, and they welcome their fans to join in.
"It’s fun to see the crowd get into it," junior forward Patrick Johnson said.
…
However, not everyone is so accepting of the mustaches.
"People have told me I look creepy," Grotting admitted, laughing. "My girlfriend won’t kiss me anymore. I think her exact words were, ‘You are single,’ but I think everyone actually thinks it’s funny."
The long, lost Prodigal_Son has returned from exile! I had abandoned all hope and surely thought he'd join the Pittsburgh flock of flightless fowl after 14 years in the wilderness ...Ladies and Gentlemen of CapsNation, let us celebrate!
There aren’t rules, but there are traditions. I think the playoff beard stems back to one of the Islanders playoffs where one of their players got some sort of infection when they cut themselves shaving and had to miss a key playoff game that cost them a series… so the next year, none of them shaved in the playoffs.
The challenge is on to see who will have more facial hair after a long playoff run. Nick Backstrom vs. my 7 month old grandson… :D

Now, I don’t care. I want the stats to show our team is better than their team. No one player is more important than the whole team to me. (not saying that for you, but I’m not going to base Ovechkin’s success or how good he is on how well Crosby performs anymore).

Interesting matchup; could lead to some boring games though
Good:
- The Habs are tiny and the Caps are one of the biggest teams in the league
- The Habs are atrocious 5v5 and the Caps are the best 5v5 team in the league
- Halak was strong for the last month – until this last week, where he totally fell apart as J.P. noted
- The Caps are the better faceoff team, which should lead to more puck possession
- Caps = 2 shots more than their opponent per game, Habs = 2.5 shots less than their opponent per game
- Marc-Andre Bergeron and Hal Gill at even strength
Bad:
- The Habs’ forwards are fast and will likely make some of our defensemen and one of our centers (STECKEL) look foolish on several occasions
- Of these diminutive forwards, Plekanec seems to eat the Caps up
- Markov has usually played well against Ovechkin, and with him, Spacek and Hamrlik, that’s a pretty good group of defensemen
- Maxim Lapierre will likely goad someone into a stupid penalty at some point
- The Habs block a ton of shots
- Habs’ PP: 21.8%, Caps’ PK: 78.8%
- Marc-Andre Bergeron on the PP and Hal Gill on the PK
The Ugly:
This is a Jacques Martin-coached team, which means they’ll try to contain the Caps 5v5 by clogging up the neutral zone and hope to win this game on special teams. Success for the Caps will come down to discipline, both in terms of penalties and patience working against the trap 5v5.
Let’s not kid ourselves – it’s unlikely that the Caps suddenly start killing more than 80% of their penalties against the Habs. If they can limit it to 4-5 penalties/game and 1 power play goal-against/game, they’ll be able to beat the Habs pretty easily. The one thing they need to do is generate enough of a lead early that a couple of PPGs against late in the game don’t snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. (Semin, keep your goddamn stick down, and Poti, keep the puck out of the crowd.)

Should have noted this:
The Habs’ record is inflated by their OT/Shootout record (15W 10L), while the Caps under-performed in OT (11W and 13L).
Given that there is no 4v4 or shootout in the playoffs, this augurs well for the Caps.
I'm not JTRS compliant.
Given that the Caps haven’t lost a regulation game since early January it augurs even better. Think about that stat. Nobody has beaten the Caps in 5 on 5 hockey for 3 months. Holy shit. That means if you win, it’s gonna take more than 60. And in the playoffs, the OT is still 5 on 5. When it’s first goal wins and it’s 5 on 5, how do you not like the highest scoring team in the league that also happens to be the best 5 on 5 team in the league?

Maybe I’m misreading you, but the Caps lost in regulation to Calgary on 3/28, to Tampa on 3/12, and Ottawa on 2/11. I had to look it up because my mind was momentarily blown. Not that 3 regulation losses in 3 months isn’t impressive.
Yeah, my bad. I meant with Theo in net. I guess he should have taken the CGY loss but Varlamov ended up with it. But by the record nobody has beaten the Caps with Theo in net during regulation since early January.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
So what’s your prediction?

Also, as the chart at the beginning of the post points out, I think that someone other than Ovie might end up being our leading goal-scorer. He can still play, and definitely has the experience in big games and against the Caps. I talk about how much PIT is missing Scuderi and Gill, so it’s only right to acknowledge that he was a good addition for MON.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Gill’s BtN stats show that he can (sort of) slow down opponents’ offense 5v5, but true to his reputation, he’s absolutely inept offensively, meaning that his overall 5v5 rating places him 3rd from last on the team, ahead of only Paul Mara (very small sample due to injury) and Tom Pyatt (lower QoC).

Tweaked that for you just a bit …
I don’t have stats to back this up, but I’m merely pointing out a playoff series tends to play itself out much differently (like a chess match) than back to back games between two teams in a regular season. The stakes are different. Strategy and adjustment becomes key.

Of all the teams to end up against first round, I never expected our opponents to be the Habs.
Then again.. I was betting on Carolina making it.
So I assume the #1 guy for Montreal is Halak?…
My goalies for the fantasy team all year have been Halak, Varlamov… and Theodore. Half my team is WSH/MON… It’s time for my team to finally destroy itself. NOO!!!!!
Also I must ask, since I’m not familiar with playoff personnel rules:
Is WSH allowed to call ppl up from Hershey at this point (even if not for injuries)? It would be hilarious to see Bruce slip Neuivy in once a round just to really mess with opponents.
4 non-emergency call-ups while Hershey is still alive in the playoffs, after that it’s unlimited. Hershey will likely be on a long playoff run as they won the equivalent of the Presidents’ Trophy in the AHL.
South Carolina is also likely to have a long run as well. :D

We’ll have to see about the stingrays. They are playing the deciding Game Five of their series right now, up 2-1 at the end of the second period. If they hold on, they advance to Round Two. Lose, and hit the links.

Prediction Time...
Caps in 5.
Why? Because the Caps are a better team. Sure the Habs are quick and can make some nice plays, but teams that try to play an up-and-down game with the Caps find themselves on the wrong end of 8-4 scores in the regular season. In the playoffs, defense gets tougher, there’s more grinding, and the Caps have proven they can grind pretty good with some of the new guys they picked up (Belanger especially, and Walker) and they can also put lots more shots on the goal than anyone.
The Canadiens may well try to grind and muck with the Caps, but they’re sending one of the smallest teams in the NHL to try to go into the corners with Ovechkin, Laich, Knuble, Bradley, Fehr, etc. The Caps have the advantage in skill, size, and strength. In every area of the game, the Caps are better than the Habs. Of course, folks will say the goaltending is an issue, but Theo’s won more playoff games than Halak has played in. Sure Theo hasn’t gone too deep in the playoffs, but Theo’s never been on a team this good before, and he is part of the reason it is this good.
Let's go Caps!
I hope you’re right, but:
teams that try to play an up-and-down game with the Caps find themselves on the wrong end of 8-4 scores in the regular season
I don’t see a Jacques Martin-coached team trading chances with the Caps. At even strength, the instant the Habs lose possession on offense, you’ll see all 5 guys drop back into the neutral zone.
The Canadiens may well try to grind and muck with the Caps, but they’re sending one of the smallest teams in the NHL to try to go into the corners with Ovechkin, Laich, Knuble, Bradley, Fehr, etc.
The Canadiens won’t try to win this one in the corners; they’ll try to win it by forcing the Caps to turn the puck over at center ice.
I'm not JTRS compliant.
by D'ohboy on Apr 11, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
I am sure that’s true, in which case I suspect the Caps brain trust (Bruce and co.) are smart enough to change up the game and make it one where it’s played along the boards and in the corners. Tell the guys if they’re setting up a trap at center ice, then get to the red line and dump it in. Take advantage of the size differential. When the Caps start doing that, the Habs defenders will start cheating a bit and going back just a little sooner, which should open up center ice some.
I know it doesn’t seem like the Caps play a very physical game, and most of the time they don’t, but I like our chances if Montreal wants to force the Caps into a physical series. A team like Montreal can’t try to play that type of game against anyone and expect to win, but against the Caps, playing the alternative is a quick way to defeat.
Let's go Caps!

Like I said – it’ll come down to discipline. BB and Co. can definitely draw up a gameplan that centers around playing dump and chase and punishing the Habs’ defenders. It’s a whole other matter as to whether the team (and the skilled players in particular) follows that gameplan.
I'm not JTRS compliant.
True. Too often I notice if the Caps do switch to a dump-and-chase game, they still forget to do the “and chase” part of it.

Herein lies the key … and Chimera is that key. He will need to step up and consistently lead the way with his speed and ability to hone in on the puck like a missile. Relentlessly. I hope the aggressiveness and fire he showed today comes to the forefront often during the playoffs.
The long, lost Prodigal_Son has returned from exile! I had abandoned all hope and surely thought he'd join the Pittsburgh flock of flightless fowl after 14 years in the wilderness ...Ladies and Gentlemen of CapsNation, let us celebrate!
If we actually do have to go dump and chase, which I’m not sure we will, then I think Chimera might even be a better option for the top line. Sure, he’s got hands like Roy Munson, but his speed makes him a near lock for any dump and chase race. Once you get the puck deep just hold it until Nick comes down then go to the net. He won’t finish like Knuble but if you can establish puck possession below the goal line for Nick and AO then you’ve done your job. Those guy can handle the rest.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.

Something I read over at CI got me thinking. Is there any possible way that Theo’s not our #1 going into the playoffs just because we play Montreal? BB hasn’t named a #1 goalie yet (not suprised or worried) and was hinting to the press before the game that his playoff line-up, netminders included, would definitely depend on our opponent. Theo’s got not so great numbers against Montreal and has played a total of 1/2 a game at Bell Centre since signing with us. Varly has stellar numbers against them. But it’s all just talk, right? I doubt BB would start Varly simply due to the fact that our opponent is Montreal after the way Theo’s been playing, even though he has pulled some crazy stuff with goaltenders before.
Rink Rabbit & newest member of TySlo's fan club.
I think/hope Theo gets the start for the first two games, because they’re here and the fans have really come around to his side. But it seems a valid question for games 3 and 4.

Whoop Whoop Caps
I’m not really happy with this match-up at all. The main reason I’m not is because BB is happy with how the PK system is running and playing currently. I think he’s sort of in denial on their performance and it could directly lead to losing two games.
They almost should have just gone out today and hooked someone every 5 minutes to practice tons of different PK lines in real game situations.
Forget the other cliches the media is harping on as far as weaknesses of the Caps.
I still imagine them coming out of the gate much stronger with more determination and I expect them to steam roll through in 5 games. I just think out of any of the teams in the east, Montreal is the one that could possibly upset the Caps if discipline unravels.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

If there is a team that can upset the Caps, look for a team with a superstar goaltender who can win a playoff series by himself. There’s only one who has done that in this conference before that is in this year’s playoffs: Marty Brodeur. Ryan Miller might be able to do that, but he hasn’t done that yet. Cam Ward has done it as well, but he’s not in the playoffs this year…
Let's go Caps!
by MikeL-Pivonka on Apr 11, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions
I’d normally agree but I’ve yet to see a superstar goaltender hold off the Caps for more than a game really. The Capitals can solve any goaltender in the league over a 7 game series. A hot goalie is far more dangerous in one and done tournaments or against teams that don’t have an entire nuclear arsenal waiting to be unleashed.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Brodeur is past his series stealing days. (Also known as he doesn’t have an All-Star D corps in front of him). At this point, Miller is the goalie most likely to do that in the East.

When has Brodeur ever won a series by himself? Off the top of my head the last time I can remember any goalie stealing a series by themselves was Giguere in the first round against Detroit in 2003. Cam Ward earned his Conn Smyth, but he didn’t single handedly steal a series either. The Canes were a 112 pt team that year – he wasn’t exactly playing behind chopped liver.

I would argue that Varly stole one against NYR. Yes, he was against Lundqivist and we had the better team, but the Caps played like trash. If he was merely average we would have lost.
I agree totally about the stupidity of the average person. Horrifyingly, nearly 50% of people are even stupider!
Varly was great but the Caps only won one 1 goal game. It was game 7, which was huge, but the games the Caps won were the games when the Caps really came to play and dominated. I can’t buy Varly stealing that series. And the GWG against us in game 4 was serious weak sauce. He doesn’t let that in maybe we don’t go down 3-1 and it doesn’t go 7.

Let’s not over think this. Let’s enjoy what is likely to be a long run.
We can all come up with ten reasons that the Habs are a terrible team and we will sweep them. Then we can come up with ten more that they match up against us incredibly well and will sweep us – and by the time the series starts — the sky will be falling.
I’m going to enjoy every minute of this. I think the Caps will oust the Habs, probably in five, but it could be four or it could be seven. I can’t over think this enough to say we will lose.

I think the lack of physicality from the Habs makes them a preferable opponent to the Rangers – even with an extra game, the Caps probably come out of a series less banged up. If they lose in the first round, it doesn’t matter whether they’re playing the Habs or the Rangers, they weren’t worthy.

A bunch of people wanted New York, because we played them last year and won, comfort level, yadda.
The Caps fans who have been around a while and have seen the postseason play in the past have a feeling of “What can go wrong, will.” and get super paranoid about every little thing, and get it out into the open ahead of time to try and accept it if it happens.

It’s all too common. “I haven’t watched this team. What was true about them in the past? Let’s toss that down.”

I like all of the Flyers and Penguins individual stats at the bottom.

wow, that’s pretty pathetic. When was the last time somebody said they expected Varly to get the nod? (not just that it was TBD, but that they expected him to be the guy?) Been a while, even though BB does seem to continually stoke that fire… http://dumpnchase.com/?p=73
So what will it be guys? Do we open up with 8-19-28 or 8-19-22

Idk about benching Flash because he has had a resurgence lately . . .
And then the BMo/Belly issue can be changed if they need it.
Although I am against line shifting during the play-offs, BB has switched up the lines so many times during the regular season, I think the team would be ok if a little “tune-uping or mix-matching” goes on (mainly with the 3rd and 4th lines)
I do like that 3rd line the way it is, because with Belanger winning FOs, that line can rotate really well and maintain possession, get great chances, score goals, be awesome.
Only thing i may change. . .is putting Flash in the Center position. He could launch pucks at the net and complement the speed and ‘crash the net’-ittude of Fehr and Chimera. That line would be super dangerous in transition, could rotate the puck very well, and get goals, and be awesome. See a pattern?
Chimera and Fehr are so versatile, BB could tune them for the appropriate “look” between games
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
yea, I would have to agree.
I would move chimera down to the 4th line, and either bench Gordo, or switch him out with brads.
stecks and gordo are both top notch of faceoffs.
but the chemistry that brads stecks and beast had was fantastic, beast’s speed added so much.
Then I would move flash into that 3rd line, I dont know in which capacity.

Will Habs take plays from Bruins book?
I wouldn’t be surprised if, as we speak and post, the Habs are intently studying the game film of the Bruins/Caps game to see how the B’s kept the puck away from Ovie and kept him off the scoreboard. Yes the Caps scored an ungodly number of goals during the regular season, but we all know playoff hockey is a different animal. Playing solid defense is a key, as is special teams play. The Habs know that to have a chance they must contain the Caps potent offense, and that begins and ends with Ovie. It also means staying out of the penalty box and keeping the Caps PP unit off the ice.
Are you talking about the last game of the season? Any coach that studies that tape should be fired. That wasn’t a representative game. AO took himself out of the game more than Boston did.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
While I’m not so sure AO took himself out of that game, the last game was probably not terribly representative of how the Caps play. Given that there was “nothing” to play for besides individual milestones.
That shootout could certainly not be considered representative by any stretch of the imagination.
Rocking the Red since 1975
FWIW, I think we are a different and better team than we were in Nov. when we played 2 of the games against the Habs. Neither Knuble nor Semin played in either one due to injury. Both were close: lost the first 2-3; won the second in SO 4-3.
The 3rd game (Jan. 5) was the day Ovi got the C on his heart, as he said, and we won 4-2 with Semin getting 2 goals (so his 1st appearance against the Habs this season) and Flash starting as center, IIRC. The last we lost also in OT, was high scoring, and Laich had his hat trick. It also was the game that ended the streak, which was bound to happen (it seems then there was almost a sense of relief by the team knowing that at some point it would end; the ever-escalating expectations of the streak seemed to weigh on them by some of the comments after that).
