Recap: Caps 3, Hurricanes 2
[GameCenter - Game Summary - Event Summary - Faceoff Summary - Corsi/Fenwick - Shift Charts - Head-to-Head - Zone Starts]
After a tremendously hyped game against Pittsburgh and two days off for the holiday, the fact that the Caps came out a bit sluggish early on is to be somewhat expected. That they shook off the Christmas fog and got down to playing the kind of hockey we like to see out of them was a little less so - although one would hope it would become more normal with each passing game.
The end result? A solid road win and a much-needed goal from a certain slumping Russian, both of which we'll take any day of the week.
Ten more notes on the game:
- The slumping Russian in question was, of course, one Alex Ovechkin. But as dismal as his point production has been so far this year (by his standards, at least) the last few games have seen a return to the Ovechkin of old. Thursday night it was the intensity and physicality; tonight he combined it with the offense we know and love, picking up a point on David Steckel's goal and then notching what would be the eventual game-winner while firing eight shots on net (and attempting five more). That's more like it, sir.
- The other offensive dynamo over the last week or so has been Mathieu Perreault, and he was back at it again tonight, cashing in on some great cycling by his line overall and collecting a nice pass from Alexander Semin for the tip-in in front. The kid's got a nose for the net and it's showing more and more.
- Of course that nose is also probably a little lopsided now, after Tim Gleason's shoulder became well-acquainted with Perreault's face late in the first period. By the letter of the law the initial call of charging (and the five-minute major that accompanied it) was probably the right one - still, on replay it was probably more a result of the three inch height difference between the two and less an actual intent to injure.
- The extended power play that the Caps got as a result, shortened to three minutes after Matt Hendricks was handed a two minute minor for his defense of Perreault, didn't yield any goals. It did, however, result in at least six shots on net and some really good possession - something that had been largely missing in the first period.
- He probably needs to do a better job of tying up Tuomo Ruutu in front of the net, but barring that play Steckel put together a very nice game for himself. Aside from his faceoff prowess - another fine night in the circle, going 11-for-16 - he did a good job driving the net on his goal, made a few very nice passes and skated almost two minutes shorthanded without giving up a goal. Nice night for Stecks...and we're not the only ones who think so.
- During the Caps' recent losing streak, it would have been easy for them to get down after giving up the tying goal in the first period - or been overly uplifted by Steckel's go-ahead goal in the second. None of that was evident tonight, though, as the team seems to have regained that swagger that was missing for most of December. And thank goodness.
- Having said that, swagger and confidence need to be combined with smart play, and mini-implosions like the one that started the third period (giving up a goal followed by back-to-back penalties) need to be avoided. Please.
- Just as the team is starting to settle in, so too are their young goaltenders. Michal Neuvirth was tagged with the loss on Thursday night despite playing well, and Semyon Varlamov came up big at times for the Caps tonight. The first Carolina goal was a product of a poor line change and a two-on-one break, the second an unlucky bounce off of Ruutu right in front, and neither was really his fault.
- Four power play chances given up, four power plays killed off. Yeah, that'll do...
- Mike Green followed up his stellar performance against Pittsburgh the other night with another good one tonight - one that included four blocked shots, at least two of which were of the bone-bruising, cringe-inducing, icebag-requiring sort.
With tonight's win the Caps sweep the Raleigh portion of their season and pick up points in their fourth straight game, extending their record to 3-0-1 since snapping their losing streak a week ago. More importantly, they're starting to find their groove again - and so are the Young Guns.
And with a rematch with Montreal looming, the Southeast Division remaining tight and a certain outdoor game less than a week away, the timing couldn't have been better.

And the Caps finally return headed up by their Captain.
Despite their not scoring on their PPs, I was impressed by how many chances they generated. Must admit I liked both Carlson and Green on the point and Ovi down low..

That is just cruel! ;)

Just hope he’s back for the WC. I’m sure that would be the highlight of his life to date, not to mention the Caps don’t need another long term injury.

Good road win, PK still looks solid. PP didn’t cash in but looked damn good creating chances, both with and without Ovie on the point although I still preferred it with him off the point.

Today was a great day in hockey. Caps win. Bears and Stingrays win. Pens lose. And the St. Louis Blues, my 2nd favorite team, won as well. The only damper was — Tampa Bay winning a 3 point game.

Is 13 minutes too liitle a time for him to make a difference in the game? I never saw him involved. Not bangin’ on him, but he seemed mostly invisible tonight? Hoped for more of his speed and creativity.
He was very good defensively and set Semin up for a few good chances once lines got shuffled. Lots of perfect PK time and a fabulous stick check in the 3rd when it was 3-2 that may have prevented a goal. Not invisible at all.

Why the heck did Hendricks get a call for roughing in the scrum after MP85 got cleaned out when so many unanswered calls have come after OVI8 clean hits were delivered and nothing was called?
How about right more our way a few times for a change? Not wanting to be a homer, but just call it straight each time, don’t you agree?

Personally, I get the feeling that we are just one or two games away from seeing everybody break out of their respective slumps and watching the whole team blow somebody out 7-1 or somesuch. In my perfect little fantasy world, it happens Saturday.

The only thing I didn’t like from #8 tonight was the play leading up to his goal, almost a shame that his play on that was rewarded.
1. Goes into corner and wins the puck.
2. Cycles puck to Knuble, who has a Cane draped all over him.
3. Knuble looks to continue the cycle since he has a defender all over him, but suddenly realizes he is now all alone on the boards because AO bailed on the whole cycle thing and was cherrypicking in front of the net, expecting Knuble to not only win the battle, be a one man cycle, and still deliver a pass to him in front of the net.
Of course, Knuble doesn’t get him the puck, but does manage to keep it in the zone, and the eventual bouncing puck lands on Ovechkin’s stick. Really can’t see how he deserved it though after bailing out on the hard work part of that play.

1. We are 11 points better than the 9th place team.
2. The “southleast” has three teams in the top 6.
3. We are only 3 points behind the Penguins and 2 points behind the Flyers.
4. BUT – no team in the NHL has played more games than we have.

I have to think that TB’s negative goal diffy is going to catch up to them.
wonder if having to play more games in the second half of the season will affect some teams. Particularly those bubble playoff teams. But that’s just crazy that at this point in the season that two teams have 38 GP, and six teams have only 33.

Observations from the Sofa...
Withdrawal is gone…. ah….
1) Good solid road game. Yes, the Caps had to withstand a barrage early, but they did that and got out in front, never trailing or playing from behind. Best way to play.
2) That said, this is the second game in a row where an opponent scored in the first minute of the third period. That has to be stopped…..
3) Gleason…after a review, I could see his penalty falling under section 48.1 of the rule book:
Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.
I don’t believe Gleason was targeting, but the wording of 48.1 makes that actually irrelevant. This to me reads that it is a penalty if an accidental shot to the head laterally occurs (which is exactly what Gleason did), it falls under this rule. The rule mentions targeting, but follows it with “and/or” and mentions principal point of contact. Lateral hit, principal point of contact is the head. Gleason should have gotten the gate and he did. He should not have been given a Match Penalty as it was not a deliberate head shot.
The NHL should address the wording too. Either an accidental head shot has to be an ejection (like tonight) or they need to provide an out for an accidental shot like this one such as a minor penalty. There should be no supplemental penalty to Gleason, but this was called right.
4) Glad to see Ovechkin back in the Goal column. Two point nights are always good.
5) Nice to see Steckel get a goal before New Year…
6) How many shots at the empty net do the Caps need to bury the damn puck? Come on guys…you’re asking for trouble if you’re not scoring those.
7) Someone needs to remind the officials that a tripping penalty in the first is the same as a tripping call late in the third when the team down by a goal is on the PK. Call it right guys.
8) We’re nearly half way through the season. A bad line change costs the Caps a goal and then they get a Too Many Men penalty with six guys in the attack zone in the third (meaning at the far end from the bench???) Come on… not good.
Aside from the slow start the Caps did play well most of this game… they need to do better against Montreal on Tuesday and in that New Year’s day thingy….

Hendricks’s doesn’t have the benefit of watching multiple replays in slow motion the way we do. All he saw was a teammate laying on the ice and bleeding profusely. The Caps can’t afford to lose any more players, let alone a center. I’m more than OK with Hendricks’ response after that hit.

I am completely okay with his response, but how does he not get an instigator, and just 2 minutes for roughing?

I don’t know but how many times have we seen other teams retaliate after clean hits from our players this season and not be given the instigator? I know it’s happened with Erskine at least a couple of times already. The refs are so inconsistent about those calls that I’m not going to complain when they go our way. It’s too bad that the Canes lost their defenseman but it happens. I wasn’t happy when Ovi got a game misconduct last year after the hit on Kaleta but that’s what happened. If the Canes want to use that as an excuse for losing the game then that’s their problem and listening to Paul Maurice’s comments after the game it sounds like he believes that that was the difference in the game for them. Teams lose players during games all the time for different reasons. The Caps lost Poti early in the game against the Pens and still managed to tie it up and is not as if the Canes didn’t have chances. They had twice as many pps as the Caps but apparently their D was too tired after the first period to keep up with the Caps.

I was really surprised when he said that was why they lost the game. I mean, the caps were already up (by one from MP85 himself) before Gleason got ejected. I dunno, just struck me as surprising a coach would state that that was the reason they lost.
I would rather them be consistent and correct than in the caps favor…but I agree with it being nice to get the call in our favor and have him get only two mins for roughing. I just rather then get the calls consistent/right. At this point I just rather consistent.

I expected fighting for both Hendricks and Gleason. Extra 2 for Hendricks for instigating.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

To get instigating, don’t you have to drop your gloves first, and engage before the other player does? Looking at that replay, Gleason was ready for retaliation and his gloves were off just about as fast as Hendricks’.
