The Noon Number: Three’s the Key

30 – Number of wins earned by the Capitals this season in which they have scored at least three goals, the third-highest win total (behind Vegas and Tampa) and an overall record of 30-3-2 for the second-best points percentage (.886, trailing only the Blues at .891).

That’s the good news. The bad? Three of those five losses this season, and two of the three in regulation, have been in the last two weeks… and one of the wins only fell into the win column (and the three-goal column) thanks to some last-minute heroics by Nicklas Backstrom. More importantly, they seem to have the reverse fortune when not scoring at least three goals – so far this season they’re just 1-14-3 with no more than two goals.

It’s nothing new during the Barry Trotz era; since he took over as the coach at the start of 2014-15, no team has as many wins as the Caps when scoring at least three times, with an overall record of 156-16-13 over that span (although they’ve been much better in two-goals-or-fewer games prior to this year, with an overall record of 30-50-16 in their last three seasons).
