5 – Number of power-play goals scored by the Capitals in December (13 games), tied for the second-fewest in the League last month. With 40 extra-man opportunities, that shakes out to just 12.5% – a substandard mark that has brought their percentage for the season down to just over 21%. It certainly didn’t help that they also gave up two shorthanded goals, bringing them up to four in the 2019-20 campaign.
It is worth noting that three of those five goals were scored in their final three games of the season (3-for-15, 25%), so perhaps they’ve started to turn the corner… one would hope, because they’ll need it clicking at all cylinders if they want to remain atop the standings.
