6 – Number of days remaining until the Caps open the 2014-15 season. But it’s also…
…the Caps’ League rank in five-on-three opportunities in the 2013-14 season. The Caps’ mighty power play went to work with a two-man advantage 13 times last year, the sixth-most (tied w/ Colorado, Detroit and Columbus)… and only cashed in one time. That calculates out to about 7.7% effectiveness at five-on-three, the worst percentage of any team that scored at least one five-on-three goal last season (Dallas and Buffalo went all 82 games without one).
This has actually become something of a trend for the Caps in recent years, as the team has just nine goals with the two-man advantage in the past four seasons (and four of those were scored in a single season) – a far cry from the eight they put up in 2009-10 alone.
