The Noon Countdown: Road Killed

19 – Number of days remaining until the start of the Capitals’ 2019-20 season. But it’s also…

…the number of power-play goals scored by the Caps away from Capital One Arena last season. That’s tied for their second-lowest total in a single season in the Ovechkin era, just one shy of their all-time low of 18 (set in 2011-12) over that span.

Those 19 goals with the extra man amounted to just 18.4% effectiveness on the road – something which wasn’t helped by the fact that they drew only 103 power-play opportunities, fourth-lowest in the League. That the power play overall managed to crack 20% (20.8, to be exact) was due to the much more successful efforts at home, where they scored 30 times on 133 chances — both of which cracked the top-ten in the NHL last year.
