Morning After: Vetoed

Like the Buffalo game, last night’s game started out well, with the Capitals getting the first goal. Unfortunately also like in the Buffalo game, the Caps were once again not able to hold onto the win, allowing Ottawa to tie the game up twice before giving way to their sixth-straight loss in the extra frame.

The game wasn’t a bad one for the Caps, but for a near must-win game against a bad, tired team, the Caps needed to bring more. And now, what was once a near slam-dunk to make the playoffs seems more and more unlikely – perhaps just showing us what they are rather than what their standings position says they should be.

Three Takeaways:

  • It was good to see Max Pacioretty get the monkey off his back, scoring his first goal since February 27th, followed by Aliaksei Protas joining him with his first since February 26th.
  • The Caps hit a couple more posts tonight, something that seems to have happened a lot this season. Hopefully next season we see more of them going in, as it would count for a couple extra wins.
  • Outside the loss, the worst news of the game was losing Rasmus Sandin after the first period to injury. He did not return and it doesn’t sound like he will be back any time soon, which, obviously, really hurts the Caps already dim playoff hopes.

They Said It:

“I feel like just at certain points in the game, we’re really struggling to find our way through momentum shifts, we mismanage pucks in odd situations…you just can’t this time of year.” – Spencer Carbery
