Morning After: Killer B’s

Last night’s game against the Bruins was one of those grind-it-out games where both teams are fighting for every inch of ice – in short, it felt like a playoff game (right down to the excessive number of obnoxious vocal visiting fans in the building). The Caps did a great job of coming strong out of the gate, weathering a bit of a storm in the second period, and fighting back to even the score in the third and earn a crucial point.

Three Takeaways:

  • Nice to see another fourth-liner picking up a goal, with Michael Sgarbossa taking advantage of a Bruins line change to fire a puck over the shoulder of Jeremy Swayman for his fourth of the season. Cue the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, baby!
  • They obviously didn’t come away with the victory, but both Dylan Strome and Sonny Milano had beautiful goals in the shootout.
  • That fruitless four-minute power play in overtime still stings a bit in the light of a new day, a golden opportunity presenting itself to the Capitals only to be squandered. As we noted last night, it wasn’t for a lack of chances – the Caps managed four shots on goal and ten shot attempts overall in the overtime, most of which was on the power play. The Bruins were throwing everything and everyone in front of pucks to keep this game tied, though, and the Caps weren’t able to get a lot of their shots through (and unwilling to change it up in order to do so).
