Capitals vs Maple Leafs Recap: Caps Can’t Crack Woll, Lose to Toronto 4-1

Plus: Look man, at some point a few of these chances early on have to go in, right?

Minus: Tonight was not that point.

Key Moment: For a couple minutes early in the first period, it seemed like the Capitals had their first power play goal (and first lead!) of the season courtesy of Nicklas Backstrom. Alas, the goal was called back to goaltender interference, bringing the game back to a scoreless tie that the Leafs would break later in the period.

Caps Player of the Game: It feels good to be able to say Alex Ovechkin for this. The Captain made it a conscious effort to make up for a couple of shotless games, peppering Joseph Woll with (14). One of them even went in! There’s still some (glaring) concerns with the rest of the team, but I think Ovi made himself a smaller one tonight.

Final Thoughts:

The Capitals lost these two games by a combined score of 10-2. It’s generally understood that the Caps aren’t playing as bad as some of these final scores would tell you, and that positive regression is coming. I’m not sure how much longer they can wait for said regression before things really fall off the rails.
