The Caps get another Wild Card hopeful in town as the Islanders head to DC – will they have their spoilin’ pants on tonight? Time will tell…

Check out Vogs’ preview of tonight’s action here, and feel free to swing by our pals over at Lighthouse Hockey for the view from behind enemy lines.

As best as I can determine, the highest we can be in the lottery is the #8 spot which gives us a 6% chance at Bedard. If they screw up and win tomorrow, they could fall (rise?) to the number 10 spot and the odds drop to 3.5%. For context, the Caps odds of winning the Ovechkin lottery were 14%. I’m confident Mac will figure out a way to tank without looking like they’re tanking.

Still BGGB

I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up but I ran a lottery simulator and got the Caps with the #1 pick on my third try so…

So that makes two of us. I mean, that’s got to be a sign. Right?

CapsFan75

In the playoff picture, Florida lost in OT but got a point.
Isles clearly lost
Buffalo won so is still alive.
Pitt needs to win out to clinch playoff spot or they are out. Only problem, Pitt plays bad teams from here on out. Okay we are all Chicago fans when they play Pitt next.

Aberg

I was listening to WFAN in NY during the wee hours of the morning and my message is this – the Capitals ruined the lives of Islander fans last night. They are in the five phases.

CapsFan75

The tears of Islander fans are always delicious. (Confess the Isles are my most disliked team, outside of Pittsburgh.)

RockingRed843

And Pitt loses to Chitown. FL locks up their spot. If Isles win, they lock up the final one, snatching it from Pitt.

JohnMarston88

Thank you, Caps! (though, I’m expecting my team to probably not show up versus the Hawks or Jackets knowing how this season has gone)

Yinzer.

You’re welcome John; isn’t that the Pittsburgh way?

CapsFan75

I understand all too well about our respective teams not showing up against a bad team. (That’s been the story of the Caps all season long, which is why we’re in the mess we’re in.)

Yinzer.
Ainsel

Perhaps meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but is any win meaningless when it pisses off NYI fans?

Yinzer.

Nope; except it counteracted and helped Pens fans so it turn it is still a net negative due to Pens Fans being worse then NYI fans.

CapsFan75

Good point there, too. Granted NY fanbases are a different type of obnoxious than Pitt fans. Rangers fans are loud and “in your face” at Capital One. Islanders fans will be chanting when coming out. But they are similar to Rangers fans. Pitt fans will gather at the Portrait Gallery and yelling crap.

CapsFan75

Very good point, considering the Isles fanbase rivals the Rangers fanbase in obnoxiousness.

CapsFan75

Panthers lose in OT. Someone (I forget who) thinks that the Panthers own the tie breaker over Pitt.

Ainsel

Strome! (Also Horvat, you suck, way to ruin a possible goalie goal.)

Ainsel

Caps, stop messing with Darcy’s save percentage.

Ainsel

Ahahahahaha Willy ENG! I can hear the teeth grinding from here.

CapsFan75

The Islanders are clearly no Boston. (Recall Boston vs Toronto in 2013)

Yinzer.

Pensburgh celebrated it

CapsFan75

That’s hilarious! Bet that’s the first time in their lives they’ve rooted for Tom Wilson.

Ainsel

Kuemps!

RockingRed843

That penalty definitely on Wilson. He got beat there.

Ainsel

And I mean, I know the Caps aren’t moving into the number one draft spot, but it’s fun to dream.

Ainsel

Eh. If the Pens miss, that’s on them and it’s hilarious. If they make it, they get a worse draft pick.

Yinzer.

Them missing would secure Hextall and Sullivan being fired which is bad for us. We want those two idiots in stay in charge over there, especially Hextall.

CapsFan75

Sullivan’s actually a great coach. But even his message could be getting stale.

Yinzer.

I just don’t think his style of coaching fits the current Pens roster, it fit back when they were winning cups but now, especially with Hextall continuing to make the team older with players like Granlund and Bonino.

CapsFan75

That would be hilarious if Pitt missed the playoffs by losing to both Chicago and Columbus. But I don’t expect that to happen for obvious reasons. If Pitt makes it as 2WC, Boston would likely dispatch them easily. But if Pitt makes it as 1WC, they might actually have a chance of advancing since Carolina is rather decimated in personnel and playing poorly. (They have a 2019 Capitals feel to them.)

skyywise

I am willing to tolerate the concept of “losing at the end of this season to spite the Penguins” … but only this one time. That said, if the Isles can’t pull their own s**t together for the Wild Card that’s on them.

gfcapsfan

Pens have Chicago and Columbus to close out the season.

CapsFan75

Just our luck. And it would be just our luck for them to be the 1 WC and meet a very decimated Carolina team who’s not played well lately. Svechnikov and Pacioretty are out for the season so that cooks their offense. And it appears that Sebastian Aho is having a particularly bad game today where he’s taking a minor penalty every time you turn around.

Thanks a heap, Florida. (But Florida’s bad start is on them. They got off to a horrible start this season and dug themselves in a deep hole.

CapsFan75

Funny thing. Chicago has actually played somewhat decently lately, despite everything.

CapsFan75

Funny thing — Chicago has done halfway decently, as of late. Still, just our luck that Pitt has a weak schedule to close out the season.

Ainsel

I’m trying to look at it, like, instead of one of our hated rival fanbases being happy tonight, at least one of them is likely to be sad.

Yinzer.

What a great (not really) first period

RockingRed843

Wilson mucking things up again. Is it me or does it seem like he’s more agitating the past few games? I just hope he isn’t regressing back to his early career 4th line form.

Davethecapsfan

Him being on a roughly 27 goal, 50 point per 82 game pace doesn’t exactly scream 4th line form.

RockingRed843

Not referring to his goal or point scoring abilities.

The Russian mobster

Let’s not blame the guy for showing passion, this team will definitely needs this fire if they want to turn it around…

RockingRed843

This is a fun one to watch. I like playing playoff spoiler sometimes. Just wish we wouldn’t help Pitt in the process.

gfcapsfan

Figures that I’m not at the game, so they remembered how to score.

CapsFan75

No kidding I felt too burned out physically (and too bummed by their play) to go so donated my tickets. And then gave Thursday’s tickets to a friend. (This is uncharacteristic of me to let tickets go that easily unless there’s an out and out scheduling conflict.)

CapsFan75

Same here. I was too “burned out” to go to the game. So now they get their act together.

Yinzer.

Where was this during Jan/Feb

Davethecapsfan

Jan/Feb not exactly the Caps best months over the last decade or so.

capscenter9

Kuzy being Kuzy

Ainsel

Lol, of course they jump out to a 2-0 lead when I’m too allergy-tired to even watch.

Yinzer.

3-0

Yinzer.

Didn’t expect this start

capscenter9

Well crap…now we are up by 2. Sandin! Let’s go caps! I must admit seriously I always want the Caps to win.

capscenter9

Strome! Nice start. Wait do I want them to win?

mnCaps1971

I admit it…I want us to lose to keep the Penguins out of the playoffs. Totally petty.
