After putting a six-pack up on Ottawa last night, the Washington Capitals hopped on a plane and made their way to the Motor City to wrap up this back-to-back with a matchup against the Detroit Red Wings. Last night was a stellar outing for the Caps, but (spoiler alert) tonight was not!

Plus: The kids are still alright! After a great showing from the young guys last night, Hendrix Lapierre and Mike Sgarbossa kept the momentum going and scored two of Washington’s three goals.

Minus: …everything else.

Key Moment: The Capitals were only down 4-2 with time ticking down in the second period. They got a power play opportunity to try and bring themselves within one and hopefully keep them in the game, but unfortunately John Carlson had other plans. He had a brutal turnover in the offensive zone that the Red Wings jumped on immediately for the shorthanded tally. After this, the Capitals didn’t really stand a chance.

Caps Player of the Game: Hendrix Lapierre is playing like a guy who wants to stay in the NHL, and he did his best to get the Capitals started tonight with a goal off a beautiful feed from Alex Ovechkin. Lapierre is looking more and more like an NHL player, which is a very positive sign for Washington.

Final Thoughts: Monday night was an incredible high for the Capitals, and everything came crashing down tonight in Detroit. Seven, and then eight, goals against is a season-high for Washington. This stat really says it all:

Onto the next one!
