Plus: Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals. What else can you ask for? He’s now one way from 30. Before the All Star break who would have thought that would happen?

Minus: The reffing. That’s about as minus as you can get.

Key Moment: With two minutes left the game the refs made an absolutely terrible tripping call that gave the Hurricanes the lead (after missing a trip by the ‘Canes just minutes before). This was after making a terribly weak call that led the Canes tying it. Just tragic, unlucky time for the Caps.

Caps Player of the Game: Has to go to Darcy Kuemper. Kuemper has had a rough season but he stood on his head to keep the game close for as long as possible and stopped 40 of the 44 shots he faced.

Final Thoughts: It’s frustrating. Caps were playing a much better team and almost walked out with a point but because of some things out of their control (and a few things within their control), they left with none.

The real shame is that right before the Canes were gifted the tying goal, Ovechkin rang the inside of the bar and it went out. He was an inch from getting a hatty and putting the Caps up 3-1. Instead the Canes got a weak call for the power play and they went down and went post in. It’s just how it’s going for the Caps lately. No luck at all.
