The Noon Number: Springtime Special

126.5 – The Capitals’ special teams index, which equals a team’s power play percentage plus their penalty kill percentage, since April 1, tops in the League over that stretch. The Caps have gone 14-for-39 with the extra man (35.9%, second overall) and killed off 29 of their 32 times shorthanded (90.6%, fourth).

And yes, we all know about those pesky shorthanded goals-against… factoring in the three shorthanded goals given up over that span brings their net PP% down to 28.2, but add in the one they’ve scored and their net PK jumps to 93.8. That brings their net special teams index to an even 122, still good enough for third in the League behind only the Oilers (122.1) and the Islanders (123.3).
