The Noon Number: No Goalie, No Problem

15 – Number of empty-net goals scored by the Capitals this season, the most in the NHL and tied with their total from the entire 2018-19 campaign. Six of those have come off of the stick of Alex Ovechkin (including three in his last five games), which sets a new career high; his previous high was five, a mark he hit in both 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Ovechkin is currently third all-time in empty-net goals with 39, just one behind Marian Hossa for second. And while Wayne Gretzky holds this goal record, as well, it’s less likely (although nothing is impossible) that Ovechkin chases him down for this one as Gretzky’s total was a whopping 56.
