Key Stat: After being placed on waivers and landing in Hershey, Devante Smith-Pelly had six goals and eight assists through 20 games for the Caps’ farm team. Smith-Pelly’s shining moment with Hershey was in a 5-3 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he scored a hat trick and extended his personal point streak to three.
The Good: With the previous points in mind, it is hard to take positives away from this season as Smith-Pelly’s time with the the Caps ticks down. Though a demotion to the minors is a hard pill to swallow after a tremendous cup run, it was likely to Smith-Pelly’s benefit to play quality minutes and score some goals.
This very well might be Smith-Pelly’s last rodeo with the Capitals. If that is the case, he leaves as a well-loved member of a Cup-winning team and someone who left a positive mark on the community.
The Bad: After Smith-Pelly’s heroics during the Capitals’ cup run and decision to take a bargain deal to return to the team, it is hard not to feel down on this season. Through 54 games played with the Capitals, Smith-Pelly registered just eight points. Smith-Pelly had a less than stellar training camp, and never seemed to quite catch his stride with the Capitals this season.

The Discussion: With Smith-Pelly’s one-year deal with the Caps expiring this summer, and the front office sounding none too enthusiastic about re-signing him, it seems very unlikely that DSP will be in D.C. next season. Under what circumstances would you want to re-sign Smith-Pelly? What would it take for you to give him a ‘10’ next season?
