The Noon Number: Ovechking

A look at an incredibly efficient goal-scoring start for the Caps’ captain

NHL: Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

25 - Number of goals Alex Ovechkin has scored through the first 30 games of the season, the fastest he’s ever hit that mark. Prior to this season, the most goals Ovechkin had ever scored through the first 30 games of the year was 22, back in 2013-14; even his record-setting 65-goal season back in 2007-08, he “only” had 21 through 30 games (which means he put up 44 in the last 52, also pretty damn impressive).

Ovechkin becomes the first player to hit 25 goals this season, the third time in his career in which he’s done so (along with 2006-07 and 2013-14). He’s just the second player to score 25 in 30 games or fewer dating all the way back to 2000-01 - joining Sidney Crosby, who also had 25 in 30 back in 2010-11.
