Sunday Caps Clips: Maple Leafs @ Capitals Game Day

Your savory breakfast links:

  • The first (figurative) trade shoe has dropped – the Capitals announced they have acquired defenseman Tim Gleason from Carolina in exchange for defenseman Jack Hillen and the 2015 4th round draft pick acquired from Arizona last year as part of the Martin Erat trade. [Caps Press Release, Canes Press Release, NHL.com]
    • Gleason will wear Number 6 for the Caps and will make his team debut tonight against the Leafs. [@CapsPR, and again]
    • “It’s funny how things work,” Gleason said. “You played these guys last night, we had a couple…you have some battles on the ice, words said, this and that, playing with the people the next day. Funny how the league works. I’ll be shaking hands with those guys tomorrow, which will be pretty funny.” [WaPo and CSNW, from Gleason’s pre-flight conference call with Washington media]
    • What they’re saying:
    • The Caps blueliners express their respect and best wishes for Jack Hillen, an excellent teammate and hard-working hockey player… [WaPo, Caps Outsider]
    • … and Mike Green talks about his presumptive new d-partner. [Monumental (video)
    • In general. [Puck Daddy, PHT, ESPN, Eye on Hockey, SI, TSN, Rink, RMNB, HockeyFights]
    • Analysis. [Frankovic, DSP, Stars and Sticks, CSNW]
    • And in other trade deadline news, Aaron Volpatti has been placed on waivers.
  • Previews of tonight’s tussle with Toronto from Vogs (plus game notes), NHL.com and Peerless, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partners over at Pension Plan Puppets (and welcome PPP’s new managing editor Scott Wheeler) for the other side of tonight’s matchup.
    • After three losses in a row, the team is Not Panicking. Nope. Nope. Not even a li’l bit… [WaPo]
    • … and perhaps the trade deadline for not-in-contention-but-kinda-sorta-preparing-for-a-rebuild Leafs is causing uncertainty and distraction for the Toronto squad. [NHL.com]
    • Post-practice interviews.[Monumental video (Trotz, Orpik, Alzner)]
  • In other organizational news, the Hershey Bears defeated the Albany Devils 4-2, and in doing so, climbed to the top of the AHL standings. [Patriot-News]
  • Surprise guests at the game included goalie coach Mitch Korn and head coach Barry Trotz, who gave an interview. Among his subjects – Aaron Volpatti will report to the Bears if he clears waivers, and the team will make sure Andre Burakovsky appears on the Bears’ Clear Day roster, making him eligible for AHL postseason play. [Patriot-News, Chocolate Hockey (pics and video)]
  • Finally, happy 33rd birthday to Brian Sutherby, and a belated happy birthday to Jakub Vrana, who turned 19 yesterday. He had a good birthday too, with this sensational pass to spring Johannes Salmonsson on the breakaway goal to put Linkoping up 7-0 on Djurgarden. [@Corey Pronman]
