- Recaps and other assorted musings on yesterday’s loss from us (plus the day in quotes), Vogs, Monumental video (Oates, Holtby, Green, Fehr, Johansson, Berube, Flyers room), NHL.com, WaPo, CSNW (gamer, blog), WashTimes, Peerless, Frankovic, DSP, and RMNB.
- The Caps’ day started out so promisingly with Dmitry Orlov‘s two quality goals and hard work from all four lines… [RMNB, CV (one, two)]
- …and then Nick Backstrom‘s non-goal goal set the tone for how the rest of the game was to play out… [Kukla’s Korner, RMNB]
- … and though Braden Holtby made many quality saves… [Eye on Hockey, PHT]
- … it was all for naught when Orlov took an ill-considered run at Brayden Schenn, earning his team a five-minute penalty kill and earning himself a phone date with the NHL Department of Player Safety. [RMNB, @NHLPlayerSafety, WaPo, BSH, CSNW, USA Today]
- “We almost don’t want two goal leads the way we’re playing with them right now.” [PHT]
- Interesting nugget via Elias: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen assisted on three goals in Sunday’s game as did Caps d-man Mike Green. This was the first NHL game in which a defenseman on each team recorded three assists since Washington’s 5-4 loss at Florida on Dec. 5, 2011, when the Capitals‘ John Carlson and the Panthers‘ Brian Campbell each notched three assists.

- Today in weird trade deadline speculation: Jaroslav Halak to be dealt by the Sabres, possibly to Minny or the Caps. Does. Not. Compute. [4th Period, @JapersRink]
- Injured defenseman Jack Hillen continues his rehab in Hershey, where he assisted on two ES goals in a 6-3 loss to the Charlotte Checkers. The pressure is building in Chocolatetown, as evidenced by coach Haviland’s ejection and his determination to shake up the roster. [Patriot-News (and again), SHoE]
- Time flies. Happy 30th birthday to Sasha Semin and happy 51th to the original spin-o-rama king, Kelly Miller.
