From the sportsnet.ca piece...

Before the midway mark of the second period, Kuznetsov completed the hat trick on a goal that would end Canadian goalie Scott Wedgewood’s night. The enigmatic Russian scored on a breakaway after a bad change by the Canadian defence gave him the glorious chance to extend the lead.

Is there a memo somewhere that says all Russians are “enigmatic?”

I almost wished they could have blown that lead the other night so Kuz would truly be a Washington Capital.

I hear Jeff Schultz isn’t that busy lately. Not that I want him to be traded, but I also want him to play, and if one isn’t going to happen under Dale Hunter, the other is the only fair option.

by jopierce on Jan 5, 2012 8:35 AM EST up reply actions

I hope GMGM is very weary of eroding the defensive depth.

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

It’d be an interesting move given that Schultz doesn’t seem to fit the system, but, we’d be trading to a team that is right now a victim of extremely shallow defensive depth.

Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn

by sydtron on Jan 5, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, their depth is bad, I see why they’d want him.

But when injuries hit, and they will, would anyone prefer to have Collins or McNeil play than the ill-fitting Schultz? Even as the 8D, Schultz is a better option than anything else. It’s not like moving him at this point is going to have huge salary cap benefits either. It’s hard to see how moving 55 makes sense unless it’s just one of a cascade of moves, which I think is highly unlikely.

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

depends on if they’d want to wheel and deal, but, honestly I don’t see anyone on their roster that improves the Caps. Any of their top 6 forwards can’t carry a line by themselves or has a NMC and Hiller is probably broken, and too expensive.

by Rather Bengt on Jan 5, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Just to clarify here, you’re saying moving Schultz just to move him would be a bad idea and not moving him would be a bad idea PERIOD.

In other words, if the opportunity to improve our roster elsewhere (say 2nd line center) for a price that included our 7th or 8th defenseman came along you wouldn’t be against it just because it weakens our defensive depth.

by HockeyGoalie29 on Jan 5, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

No, for a 2C I’d move Schultz. And so would any GM. But there’s no deal that is straight up Schultz for a 2C. So now it’s like “Schultz and a First for a 2C.” I’d still consider it, depending on the 2C, but I’d try to find a different supplemental asset to throw in. And even after that trade is done, the Caps are back to looking for some defensive depth.

Please, call me F&B.

Because he’s more valuable, right?

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Not necessarily. And teams value different players differently (otherwise trades would be rare). Getzlaf is the captain and Anaheim is woefully thin at center after him and Koivu. Koivu is pushing 40, so he’s clearly not part of the future. The presence of Ryan, Etem and Smith-Pelley might make Perry. . . not expendable, but perhaps more easily replaced in their lineup.

We both know I’m on record as valuing centers over equivalent wings. I just don’t think the two players are equivalent in this case.

Unleash the Apathy.

by D'ohboy on Jan 5, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

Well if Perry or Getzlaf (or Ryan) get moved it’ll be fore Core pieces. Murray said he has the core pieces in place so he may not blow up the team. They are in the process of figuring out who is going to be there going forward. To me that says “if anything happens it’ll be a core-for-core swap.” Maybe I’m mis-reading it. That’s also why I don’t think anything will happen. Core-for-core swaps are pretty rare.

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Getzlaf appears to drive play at least as well, if not slightly better than Perry — even in last year’s MVP season. But yeah, he’s unlikely to be moved.

This has to be in the running for the most cliches/mixed metaphors over a two-sentence span ever:

The Capitals used to be Washington’s ace in the hole, the go-to winter team when all others had fallen short. Then came this season, which started with promise then fell down the rabbit hole — or maybe just one of our ubiquitous potholes — but nonetheless, off the rails went the Caps and their once-crowded caravan.

What’s worrisome here is according to Shanahan, Bourque explained that the elbow was “an instinctive reflex”. It’s one thing to lay a shoulder hit on Backstrom, late or not, but it’s another to raise your elbow towards another player’s head

I’ve seen a lot of players blame different things on why they hit someone in the head, but this is probably the first time I’ve seen someone blame Duran Duran.

from ESPN's Lebrun
…the bigger-picture story for the Caps, who finally have their mojo back and are playing their best hockey under Dale Hunter. What really jumps out at me is the puck possession they have right now. This is the kind of hockey that this lineup should be playing.

emphasis mine

Any thoughts on pre- and post-Hunter Fenwick lines?

The Caps are playing better, but I wouldn’t say it’s because they’ve turned into possession hogs. I’d point to better defense, special teams and goaltending. AO waking up has helped a little bit too.

In the most recent SI that hit my kitchen counter yesterday, McGuire is praising of the Caps PK.

It has taken some time, but the Capitals appear to be back on track under Dale Hunter, who took over as coach on Nov. 28. After beating the Sabres 3-1 last week, they had killed off 23 straight opposition power plays at home. The key to Washington’s penalty kill has been an emphasis on quick changes for the forwards and pressuring the puck in all three zones.

by STLSpidey on Jan 5, 2012 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

With just a couple exceptions—the 21+15 fiasco a couple weeks ago standing out—the PK has been otherworldly. Can’t help but think it’s going to regress a bit with a little more study. But it’s sure as hell hard to beat fresh legs.

Cross check and all call.

by bigonetimer on Jan 5, 2012 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

For sure believe that a good part of the PK success is small sample size variance – no one can be that good.

I have definitely noticed the short shifts and rapid changes.

I take some issue with the puck pressure. I feel like the PK is about puck pressure, but it’s about pressure at the right time and place. When the puck isn’t in the right place at the right time, they’re more passive than they were under BB.

I’ve been meaning to pull together some screen caps to flesh this out for a fanpost to test this theory.

by fat_daddyo on Jan 5, 2012 9:00 AM EST up reply actions

Buy. I’d love to see what you come up with, but it seems to me that once the puck goes below the dots along the boards, the PK’ers are making life miserable for the opposing PP with heavy pressure. It also seems like there’s less pressure on the points—the Caps seem content to let’em bomb away from distance, give the goalie a good view and clean up rebounds. More blocks too.

Cross check and all call.

I think it might depend on how you define possession. The shot chart certainly doesn’t appear to have gone in the right direction under Dale:

That said, actual puck possession might tell a different story… or it might just be narrative.

by J.P. on Jan 5, 2012 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

I think it’s fair to say that it’s not so much actual puck possession, but better efficiencies (and luck) under Dale: the Caps are generating goals despite fewer SOG, and preventing goals despite getting routinely out-Fenwick’d.

Yeah, how do you define puck possession? It’s one thing to have the puck but a whole other to do something worthwhile with it. If you have the puck but can’t generate the opportunities (and maybe instead, you just pass a lot), should that count against you?

by jopierce on Jan 5, 2012 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

We talked about this a bit in yesterday’s Noon Number discussion. “Possession” as measured by things like Fenwick and Corsi isn’t really “possession,” just the best proxy we’ve got for it, since no one’s got a stop watch on actual possession, like it’s tracked in video games or the NFL. There’s no statistical measure that I’m aware of that credits a strong cycle or even O-zone time.

I can’t seem to find it, but haven’t scoring chances increased under DH? I thought I read that somewhere. But since it’s not officially tracked I’m not sure where I can look it up.

I think that might be another way of looking at possession, and the quality thereof, under Hunter. Given the lack of run-and-gun under DH, it would stand to reason that those opportunities are generated off of effective puck possession.

After all, isn’t it preferable to have more scoring chances, even with less total shots – than to have high shot totals with less scoring chances.

by Gin and Tonic on Jan 5, 2012 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

I would say it’s preferable to have more scoring chances, yes.

You’d have to ask Neil about the scoring chances under DH, not sure where else they are being tracked.

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

I found Neil’s chart that tracks individual players’ SC and the for/against differential. But nothing there provided information on identifying trends post-DH. Nor a team game-by-game tracking

Not scoring chances directly, but under DH Ovi’s Shots/Game has increased from 3.6 to 4.2; during that same time his S% has increased from 11.3% to 12.4%. He’s also improved from .77 PPG to 1.0 PPG.

For Backstrom his Shots/Game decreased under DH from 2.6 to 2.1, his S% increased from 11.1% to 17.3% while his PPG remained steady at 1.1.

So maybe there are increases in SC as well.

by Gin and Tonic on Jan 5, 2012 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

During even-str on a per game basis scoring chances-for have been the same: 12 under each.

Chances against, however, have risen under Hunter: 13.2 vs 11.3.

I gave Tarik Ovechkin’s scoring chance numbers for his post the other day:

Since the coaching change, the former two-time MVP has taken 4.3 shots per game, up from 3.6 before it. He’s also getting 3.3 scoring chances per game, up from 2.4 under Boudreau.

Here’s Vogs, on Twitter, at the time: “Bourque to the box for an elbow on Backstrom. Hope that greasiness doesn’t go unnoticed by certain teammates.”

Clear implication of what he thought the appropriate response would be, and that response never came. The whole lot of the beat writers asked about the non-response (most answers were some form of “I didn’t see what happened”). So I don’t think that column is out of line.

But yeah, it may very well have been inspired by a conversation among the most intelligent and articulate Caps fans on the web, especially given my noonish tweet from yesterday: “Btw, good discussion in the comments to this morning’ sClips regarding the #Caps reaction (or lack thereof) to the Bourque elbow.”

If Matt Hendricks’ contribution is going to be one goal every 40 games…well, it makes you wonder.

I even dispute any claim that the Caps didn’t see it in real time. Maybe the guys on the ice didn’t see it, but it happened right in front of the bench (where Hendricks was sitting). In the Shanaban video on the suspension there is one view where you clearly see Halpern pointing to the play and yelling at the ref right after it happened. So the Caps knew what happened, but just didn’t respond.

Agent.

On April 16, 2004, two days after the Blues were eliminated from the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the San Jose Sharks, Danton was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. On July 16, 2004, he pled guilty to attempting to hire a hitman, who was actually a police dispatcher, to murder David Frost, his agent, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William Stiehl to seven-and-a-half years in a United States federal prison. To this day, however, Frost denies that he was the target. Recently, Danton has claimed that his original target was his estranged father, Steve Jefferson.

They sure as hell succeeded. A clean sweep of the top three in forwards, two of the top three defensemen, and they even mounted an impressive write-in campaign for Craig Anderson — he of the 3.19 GAA, .899 SV% — bumping him up to 15th among goalies. Pretty good for the 6th seed in the East.

(Toronto fans a respectable showing as well, with Leafs #4 and #5 among forwards, #2 and #7 among defensemen, and their 3.01 GAA, .900 SV% goalie placing second only to Tim Thomas.)

Still remembered as the guy who scored the biggest goal in Caps history, when he shoved a rebound past Dominik Hasek in OT in game 6 of the Eastern Final in 1998, send the Caps to their only Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Good player, had a incredibly soft hands, able to make plays. Never shot the puck enough.

Since his retirement, he’s been working up in the far north of Quebec helping to bring hockey to Inuit children in the region. The website for the program is here: http://www.nyhdp.ca/

I think a Caps Report from a few years back said Nick was afraid of flying. Not sure if this is still the case, but I can imagine that this won’t help him feel any better about being on a plane.

by jopierce on Jan 5, 2012 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

I think it depends if his problems are related to just a migraine or a concussion. Air pressure changes from flying can trigger migraines but you just take your migraine medicine as you get on the flight to prevent one. You still can get one the following days after flying though, depending on the altitude of where you go and your status (more prone to migraines at certain times than others). Actually I was curious if Backstrom just had a migraine why he still had a lot of symptoms the next morning, enough not to pass the testing. Maybe he didn’t take medicine though or it didn’t work.

by vtcapsfan99 on Jan 5, 2012 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

I have had migraines that last days, even with meds. Hopefully it is just something like that. I imagine a migraine would mess up a concussion test as a lot of the symptoms are similar.

by RockinRed4Life on Jan 5, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

A lot of things can trigger migraines, including changes in sleep patterns and stress. If I had been hit in the head and the word “concussion” was looming, especially with all of the concern and awareness of it in the league this year, I might be pretty worried or stressed, even if I didn’t talk about it.

by jopierce on Jan 5, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t think the stress of worrying about a concussion gave him a migraine. Yes, stress does contribute to migraines, but the hit itself could have done it all on it’s own. Sometimes when you are in a good phase you can be exposed to migraine triggers and not have a migraine, but it a worse phase, you are more susceptible to the triggers. If stress was going to affect Nicky with migraines, I think it’s more likely daily stress from travel, his job, etc not a sudden fear of a concussion. Doctors tell migraine patients to do stress relief sorts of activities (biofeedback, meditation, yoga, exercise, acupuncture) to help deal with the daily stress that can contribute to migraines. At least we know he has exercise covered.

by vtcapsfan99 on Jan 5, 2012 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

I was completely out of touch most of yesterday, but while I was driving to my location in the morning I suddenly wondered if the hit didn’t simply trigger a migraine. We hadn’t heard of him getting one in a long time, so I’d forgotten about them. Looks like that may have been it, in which case he got off very lucky. And of course we’re very, very glad.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."

by gfcaps fan on Jan 5, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

I think he probably still gets migraines some but it’s not mentioned, I guess they haven’t affected him during games, so we don’t know about it.

Perhaps Nicky will be lucky and it’s only a migraine triggered by the hit and nothing else? I have personally experienced a migraine from being hit hard on the head/neck area. I can literally say the Red Rockers gave me a migraine. They shot one of those t-shirt cannons things while I was walking out after a game and hit me directly on the head/neck when I wasn’t look towards the ice. I didn’t realize how hard those shot until I was hit. I didn’t even get the shirt for my troubles either. I took some muscle relaxers but couldn’t prevent getting a migraine on that side from the hit. Then I turned into one of “those” fans and wrote Leonsis an email saying I didn’t think those t-shirt guns were safe and they shouldn’t shoot them at unsuspecting fans as they walked out. Anyway, best case scenario is that he just got a migraine and nothing else and hopefully he’ll be fine when it goes away.

TBL speculation

Wild beat reporter Michael Russo says Lightning GM Steve Yzerman was at the WIld-Canucks game last night and speculates that the Lightning may have interest in Wild goalie Josh Harding. Also the Wild carry nine D-men, which is also an area of interest for the Bolts.

On a personal level, I would be kinda ticked if the Bolts picked up Greg Zanon, one of my favourite stay at home D-men in the league.

by Rather Bengt on Jan 5, 2012 10:57 AM EST reply actions

As Russo noted and more context, some GMs and scouts made the short trip from Calgary to Vancouver to scout last night’s game, since they were in Calgary for the WJC games the day before and many are returning for today’s medal games.

It’s just completely ludicrous to me on every level.

They let FA after FA goalie walk, and then they sign this guy. Granted, he’s good, but still, they’ve got Lindback, AND the guy at Milwaukee is pretty good too. And Chet Pickard’s decaying corpse somewhere. It will probably end up costing them Weber and/or Suter, unless they’re just throwing up their hands and saying “fuck it, these guys aren’t coming back anyway”.

Not sure Ellis walking as an UFA is an issue. Dekanich was a Group 6 UFA, if I am remembering correctly, and my guess is he probably wanted an opportunity in another orgnizatIon, but that’s a guess.

They traded Vokoun in part because of an about to kick-in NMC and related to the ownership situation at the time; 3 picks in return (used to select Spaling, one was traded and I believe Colin Wilson was the other pick, but not the exact slot due to another trade.)

Then it was Mason, Ellis and Rinne; then Ellis and Rinne for couple of seasons.

Jeremy Smith is the starter in Milwaukee. Engren’s the back-up.

Garon to fill the backup role behind Backstrom (Bakstrom?) + a high pick? That would shuffle Rolo to the backup role, and fits with the precedent of acquiring a backup with good numbers (Rolo) and sliding him into the starter’s role.

MIN banked a bunch of points, so I’d be surprised if they’re writing off the playoffs at this point. They probably want the gate revenue at the very least.

Adding Rolo at the cost of Harding would seem to be a concession of defeat.

Patron saint of quality footwear.

by fat_daddyo on Jan 5, 2012 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn’t that depend on what other player(s) were sent to the Wild in a trade. I don’t think people are proposing a goalie for goalie trade, but a goalie for a goalie plus trade.

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 5, 2012 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

I understand that, but here’s my thinking.

The Bolts don’t have any impact players to send back that they can afford to lose from their roster. So we’re talking about propsects and/or picks.

Prospects/picks would help MIN later but not now.

Right now, MIN is trying to make the playoffs. They are probably tenuous enough bets for the playoffs that they can’t afford to downgrade their roster in the immediate term.

Having Rolo as your backup is a downgrade from Harding.

Garon might be a lateral move with Harding.

So I see Garon a a more llikely/reasonable return than Rolo.

Patron saint of quality footwear.

by fat_daddyo on Jan 5, 2012 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

I guess they would given they would want to keep Hackett in the AHL this season getting regular starts. Endras is an unknown at NHL level and the other goalie, Kuemper, is young, too, so no simple back-up replacement for this season.

It would be amusing to see Roloson back in Minnesota, but I’m having a hard time seeing Backstrom and Roloson as a goalie tandem.

depends on how the amnesty is worded. in the NBA any team can submit a claim with a dollar amount and the highest bidder wins. If nobody claims the player then they become a UFA but they cannot resign with the team that amnesty’d them

by Beakers Lab on Jan 5, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah. The only possible way I could see AO being amnestied is if he went to the Caps and said “let’s restructure my deal so I have a lower cap hit.” I don’t personally see AO doing that, I don’t think there’s any reason for him to do that. I think the NHL will be smart enough not to allow teams to amnesty buy out a player, then re-sign that player so the total compensation is the same but the cap hit comes down. But I’ve overestimated the NHL’s intelligence before…

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

Agree with this. If there was no clause preventing him from immediately re-signing with the Caps, I can definitely see him doing this. The whole “I don’t need no stinking agent” scenario leads me to believe that Ovechkin sees the following priorities:

1. Do what is best for me
2. Do what is best for the Caps
3. What is best for the Caps is winning a Cup, which is best for me

The guy already has every individual award and he knows that the conversation is “Why AO doesn’t have a Cup”. It’s not like he misses out on any money if they give him amnesty — he gets all the money plus a better opportunity to fill in the needed pieces to win it all.

Vokoun vs Thomas - intrinsic value

For no particular reason, I was looking at goalie stats. Vokes and Timmah are remarkably similar in a lot of areas:

TT has 17 wins, TV has 16 wins. Thomas has played in 2 fewer games. Thomas has actually faced more shots in fewer games, which surprised me, and has allowed 16 fewer goals. TT has that awesome SV% at .940 vs TV’s not shabby .915.
I would have thought TT’s save percentage would translate into more wins, honestly.
But when you look at lifetime win% for NHL goalies, you have Ken Dryden at the top of the heap at .650, then Brodeur at 2nd with .550. Thomas is 19th at .517. It’s hard to win in this league consistently.

TT’s .739 win % this season is obviously stellar, as is TV’s at .667. Makes me feel pretty good about TV and the team supporting him.

So apparently Barch asked PK if he slipped on a banana peal when he fell down during a fight. And Campell who was the one in charge of the suspension said he would’ve gotten 5 games if it had been a racially charged insult. So if he didn’t deem the banana peal comment as racially charged, then why did he get even one game?

It's not that I don't like people, I'm just happier when they're not around - Hank Chinaski

by Edanger6 on Jan 5, 2012 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Couldn’t agree more. The suspension makes no sense to me – either it was racially motivated or it wasn’t, five or none in my book. I guess “racially insensitive” was the rationalization, but punishing hockey players solely for being stupid is a slippery slope (like an incline covered in… wait for it… banana peels).

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by Edanger6 on Jan 5, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Ha.

If it’s “insensitive,” presumably the distinction between that and being full-on racist is in intent. And if there’s no intent to be racist, I don’t see how you suspend the guy. It’s like applying a negligence standard to words… which is weird to me.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Jan 5, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Also from Marek and Whysh

Who used your slippery as a a banana peal slope joke BTW. That hockey exists as an alternate reality (on the ice) wherein you suspend some of your rights (getting hit, slashed, face washed, fighting etc) and shouldn’t that extend to language also.

It's not that I don't like people, I'm just happier when they're not around - Hank Chinaski

by Edanger6 on Jan 5, 2012 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

No, to me it shouldn’t at all. There’s assumption of risk here, to be sure, but there are penalties in place to discourage plays that are deemed illegal, so why not for language deemed illegal?

To me, the bottom line is simple – you want to create an environment in the sport where everyone who wants to participate can feel comfortable. If you allow racial or homophobic slurs, you’ve defeated that goal. This isn’t about coddling, it’s about acceptance. And it starts at the top.

What about the manner in which the comment is discovered? For instance, when Hendricks fought Downie last season and dropped a four letter derogatory phrase in the penalty box. Yeah, I don’t have a problem with him saying that, to be honest (besides the fact that truth is an absolute defense).

While it is certainly misogynistic, I think there’s a difference in that Hendricks isn’t literally saying that Downie is a vagina. He’s not insulting Downie based on who he is as a human being. It’s worlds different from a racial or, in some instances, homophobic slur that goes to who the person in question actually is.

How is that different from say Simmonds calling Avery a faggot as a general insult and not actually questioning his sexuality? That term (and other anti-gay slurs) is very often used without literally questioning sexuality.

Release the Mackan!

by Killer_Carlson on Jan 5, 2012 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think I’ve pretty well laid out my answer in comments below, but first of all, we don’t know whether Simmonds used that slur literally or not. Given some of Avery’s off-ice interests and what passes for the intelligence of the average NHLer, Simmonds could literally think he’s a homosexual. Or not.

But more to the point, if the word “faggot” gets tossed around hockey rinks, hockey rinks become places where a segment of society won’t feel comfortable. Is there a similar risk if the word “pussy” gets thrown around? I don’t think so. First off, we’d have to be looking at co-ed leagues (which certainly exist as you get further away from the NHL), and secondly, you have to acknowledge the reality of the relative social acceptance (beyond hockey) of certain terms.

I would be much stricter in what I deemed acceptable in a co-ed league. And yes, I admit that there’s a bit of a double-standard here, but I’m interested in dealing with the most egregious offenses first.

Don’t be such a little girl about it.

Just kidding.

Seriously, though, it gets back to the point Rob and I were making about intent. When a player tosses a racial slur out there, it’s usually because the intended recipient is of that race and the slur is intended to denegrade that person about their race.

When a player tosses a homophobic slur out there, it’s sometimes because the intended recipient is of that sexual preference and the slur is intended to denegrade that person about their sexual preference.

But when Matt Hendricks calls Steve Downie a See You Next Tuesday, he doesn’t do so because he believes Downie is literally a vagina.

In what way would it not be sexist? If you’re using femaleness as an insult, you’re saying that being female is bad. You know what drives me crazy? “Don’t call Crosby ‘Cindy’; show some respect, he’s a world class athlete.”

He is. The problem is that that argument is predicated on the idea that being a woman is a bad thing—it’s an insult that you’re calling him a girl.

If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak.

by Hang a Laingtern on Your Problems on Jan 5, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Sure, if Hendricks said “Downie, you are a fucking girl” then maybe you have a case. But players call each other “dickheads” all the time. Is that demeaning to all men? What about when they call each other “assholes,” is that demeaning to all vertebrates that have evolved past the point of having a cloaca?

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions   2 recs

We both know that’s a flawed argument. There is a clear difference in the connotations of “pussy” or “cunt” and “dick” or “asshole.” You know how I know for sure? Some of those things you can say on tv, and some you can’t. If you took a poll of men who were offended by being called a dick versus being called a pussy, what do you think the results would be?

If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak.

by Hang a Laingtern on Your Problems on Jan 5, 2012 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Uh, probably like 1% for both groups?

We both know it’s a flawed argument? No. I’m not in the habit of trotting out arguments I know are flawed. Moot Court taught me better than that.

It’s a body part. It’s not literally calling anyone a woman. It’s not demonstrating any hatred or condescension of women. It’s just a word that players use to insult. If pussy is an insult to all women, how is dick not an insult to all men, and asshole not an insult to everyone? Because you think that one of those words is more or less offensive to a particular subset of people?

Please, call me F&B.

You’ve got it backwards. Calling Crosby “Cindy” isn’t tolerated because the people who call him that do so with the intent of calling him a girl being an insult. The complaint here isn’t that calling him a girl is an insult – it’s that it’s insulting to girls to use it as an insult.

Right. So the original person called him Cindy to imply he’s a girl, and that’s the insult. But the defense wasn’t, “there’s nothing wrong with being a girl,” it was, “don’t insult him like that, he deserves better.” The defense didn’t rebut the idea that being a girl is an insult.

The counterargument is that the insult when applied to someone not in that class is still based on the assumption that there is something inferior about the class. So, calling a straight player a “fag” is no different from calling him a “bitch” or whatever. I’m not sure there’s a meaningful difference.

by Beakers Lab on Jan 5, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

I agree on the first part, but where there’s a meaningful disinction is in how literal the insult is, both in the mind of the offender and victim – call another player a bitch and it’s because you think he has demonstrated “unmanly” qualities, not that he’s literally a female; call another player an n-bomb, it’s likely because he’s black. In one case, you’re saying “you’re like such and such, which is terrible” and in the other “you are such and such, which is terrible.” To me, that’s a difference.

bias-motivated based on perception that the victim belongs to a specific group

The things you listed would be based on the victim himself and not attributing stereotypes of a specific group to that victim. They’d be fair game, for the most part. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, if the insult is narrow and directly targeted at the victim without also taking a whack at a much wider group, I think you’re fine. Likely a horrible human being, but fine here.

But all of this is a bit case-by-case, and maybe the porn “I know it when I see it” standard comes into play some.

If you know conclusively that’s what he said. At first, the accusation was that he called BB a homophobic slur. I wanted to judge for myself so I watched the video but didn’t tell anyone what I think he said. Then I went here and nearly everyone thought he said something other than what the people on twitter thought he said. And I didn’t think it was conclusive. Then someone brought up he might have been speaking Russian. So it’s not like it’s definitive like its definitive that Hendy dropped the c bomb because you know he’s speaking English and he wasn’t muttering it, he was nearly yelling it.

by jopierce on Jan 5, 2012 7:16 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Applying “intent” is also tricky. Racists make racist comments, but not everyone who makes racists comments is racist? I guess the difference there isn’t so much “intent” but malice, hatred, and prejudice outside the game, which are things not easily judged.

In Kerry’s article he talks about an incident related to a player of East Indian descent. He said he failed to act, but I wish he had written about what he would have done if he could do it over again. It’s a “racially insensitive” thing, but directly related to a person’s ethnicity or race. You can interpret the comment as racist but it’s much more difficult to paint the player with that brush. How do you discipline a player in that instance?

by jopierce on Jan 5, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, intent is tricky. But it’s not so much “intent to be racist” as “intent to say something you are well aware has racial connotations.” That makes it a little easier, I think. Maybe not much.

But this isn’t suspending for elbowing or something where intent might matter less. There’s nothing inherently injurious about these words (in this instance), so intent is really all you can go on.

In Fraser’s example, I’d give the guy an unsportsmanlike or some sort of notice that it wasn’t ok, at a minimum.

Yeah, constantly. Including in the locker room. I’ve said it before, but my take on it falls close to J.P.‘s, it’s about acceptance and the sport being welcoming. I firmly believe that most times people in my generation use homosexual slurs they don’t literally mean that the person is a homosexual, but if those phrases make people who are homosexual feel unwelcome then it has to stop.

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 5, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Exactly. Which is why a homophobic slur isn’t the same as a racist one in many cases – people toss around homophobic slurs (or stuff like “retarded”) without care for what the words actually mean. It’s less likely that they’ll do that with racial slurs.

Both are bad. Both need to stop. But they’re not necessarily the same.

Ciccarelli had such a great line after that series.

by RCheli on Jan 5, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

The moment that epitomizes Barnaby for me was in a game (may have been the 98 conference finals, may have been elsewhen) where he was in some sort of altercation and sent to the box. He was running his mouth, whining and bitching, and then he proceeded to slam his stick into the box repeatedly, until it broke. Then he screams “Hey, my stick is broke” at the ref, which required the linesman to delay the restart further so that he could get a new stick.

I know he is entitled to a stick for when he leaves the box, but I kinda thought (and still do think) that he should have been forced to wait until at least the next stoppage to get a new one, and if that was more than two minutes later, then tough shit.

After that, every time I see him all I can think is “What a whiny, petulant dickhead.”

Weird. So the implicit function here is to get teams to stop employing guys who are going to do stupid things. Not sure I think it will have much of a real impact, to be honest.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Gotta start somewhere. Owners are rich guys who throw stupid money at marginal talent at times, but I’ll bet they don’t like parting with money for nothing. But it’s the owners making the rules, so it’s never going to happen anyway.

The problem with that is that a non-insignificant number of teams in the league essentially operate in the red or on the cap floor. One particularly bad fine and you’d cause an owner to bail on a team potentially.

My “somewhere” would be harsher penalties for the guys actually committing the offenses.

But if you want to hit the teams, how about docking them a roster spot or two during a suspension or something?

They still had his cap hit while he was suspended and that was the issue not a roster spot issue. The NJD didn’t have enough cap room to recall another player.

Related to this topic.

The restriction on fines for players needs to be addressed in the next CBA. How does a player learn from a warning and a “whopping” $2,500 maximum fine when the minimum salary is $525,000 (*minimum for 11-12 season); he doesn’t. I’ve heard it mentioned that this will be an issue addressed with the next CBA, hopefully it is.

Yeah, the fines are a joke. As I see it, the only real purpose they serve is to put a mark on a guy’s record for future reference (and that’s certainly not nothing… but the actual pain they feel on a $2,500 fine is negligible, I’d think).

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Jan 5, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Why not make it a percentage of the player’s salary? 3% across the board. It seems small, but a player making $1.5 million that year would pony up $45,000. You consider that to be pocket change to him, but
you want to send a message that’s lesser than say, a long suspension but more than a slap on the wrist.

I don’t think you’d ever get an OK from the players association to treat the same infraction differently based on how good a guy’s agent (or the player’s skill level) is.

Random non-caps related question

But we’re almost at the halfway point, so let’s have some good ol’ fashioned speculation.

What do you guys think the odds are that Nugent-Hopkins gets the Calder? He seems to have slowed down a bit lately, but then again, pickin’s seem slim. No goalie is going to get enough games to really be considered. The next highest D-man in rookie points scoring has a terrible +/-.

Orlov is eligible due to being a rookie, but he won’t be an option unless he starts scoring at least every other game. Larsson hasn’t really done enough to be considered – 2G, 11A, -11. Plus he’s on the same team as Henrique, who has much better numbers. Landeskog is unlikely – too far down in the rookie scoring ranks.

Failure is always an option.

“I acknowledge my mistake, regret my action and take full responsibility. I accept the decision rendered by Brendan Shanahan on behalf of the League,” Bourque said in a statement Thursday. “I apologize to my teammates, the Flames organization and to Niklas Backstrom. I am embarrassed for what I did. These are exactly the type of plays that need to be eliminated from hockey.”

From Brian Burke's presser today after waiving Colton Orr
"In the old days, players protected themselves and it evolved into a player protecting their teammates and now I’m not sure who is looking after each other, other than Brendan Shanahan. To me, it’s a dangerous turn in our game."

Burke, however, isn’t criticizing Shanahan for having to hold "six hearings" every few days.

"He’s got a lot more work than he should have. He needs a telephone receptionist at his house because of all the crap that is going on the ice," Burke said.

"Guys won’t back it up. They won’t drop their gloves and are running around elbowing people to the head and running people from behind because there is no accountability."

From the Toronto Star game recap
The Leafs captain had one of his best games of the season, a tour de force on the heels of a three-game losing streak that also saw several other teammates spar with Downie. This was the club’s first game of 2012 and the previous day at practice, the players discussed, among other things, the need to become a tougher team to play against. Phaneuf matched that promise with actions. And he wasn’t alone. Downie was at his best, being physical and borderline dangerous with his physical play. At first, he zeroed in on Phaneuf in the first period, triggering a scrum and some verbal exchanges that would have been bleeped out of the audio if they’d been picked up by the game camera microphones
