A law was made a distant moon ago here:
October and November do not count…
And there’s a legal limit to the joy here
In Capelot.
The season doesn’t matter ‘til December
And exits March the second on the dot.
Draft and free agency last ‘til September
In Capelot.
Capelot! Capelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Capelot, Capelot
That’s how conditions are.
The puck may never drop till after sundown.
By ten, the win must be put in the books.
In short, there’s simply not
A more congenial spot
For regular season games than here
In Capelot.
Capelot! Capelot!
I know it gives a person pause,
But in Capelot, Capelot
Those are the legal laws.
The playoffs always start in early April
By May we’re done and heading to the links
In short, there’s simply not
A more heartbreaking spot
For torturing ourselves than here
In Capelot.

So assuming Green has a bounce-back year, has Doughty’s new deal set the bar for 52’s next contract?
Hard to say, since Doughty’s deal buys out more RFA years than Green’s next one will. I’d think it certainly helps set the ceiling, but a lot could depend on the new CBA as well.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
This might open up a whole new can of worms, but is Green worth 7MM a year?
Last year’s concussion(s) are something to worry about, so I can’t see him snagging an 8 year deal like Doughty. I think McPhee will play the waiting game with Green, and take advantage of his RFA status. I wouldn’t be shocked to see them give him a 1-year deal at a similar salary he has now, then open up longer term negotiations after that year.
by JimCareyFanClub on Sep 30, 2011 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions
The danger with doing a one year bridge to UFA (a la Semin) is that the asset walks and you get zero return. It’s possible, but I think more likely that McPhee buys a couple of UFA years but doesn’t go crazy.
Green also isn’t the face of the franchise that Doughty (arguably) is. I really don’t think Green’s next deal and Doughty’s new deal are going to have a heck of a lot in common.
So with the roster down to 26 players (not counting the extra goalie or Poti)
G (2/3): Neuvirth and Vokoun, plus Holtby temporarily
D (8 + Poti): Alzner, Carlson, Green, Hamrlik, Schultz, Wideman, Erskine (no contact)
plus Orlov; Poti (LTIR)
F (16): Backstrom, Brouwer, Chimera, Halpern, Hendricks, Johansson, Knuble, Laich, Ovechkin, Semin, Ward
plus Beagle, Eakin, King, Perreault, Sjogren
assuming Beagle and King are slotted in with the first group of forwards… that leaves Eakin, Perreault and Sjogren…

Also, I skimmed through the Ferner/Konowalchuk chat last night…glad I didn’t know before that Kono’s favorite team growing up was the Flyers. Only mention of the Caps I noticed (again, I only skimmed) was Konowalchuk talking about Ferner’s mentoring during Kono’s first NHL camp. Still, it was an interesting for those interested in junior hockey, etc. link
Ken Dryden writing on Grantland about Crosby and headshots? Stock up on the canned goods I guess.
Funny thing about this which I heard about recently via ESPN, Carrick went on a radio show shortly after (if memory serves) this presser and saying “He’ll be back in the game pretty darn quick…quicker than I think other people would have ever thought.” This involved (if memory serves) Collins basically having to put out a release discussing said comments in detail, and circling back with Crosby too.
Regardless of the athlete, that type of irresponsibility with the people who are treated an inflicted athlete just further illustrates that if you know…you don’t know (and should probably shut your piehole until you know definitively).

This is long as hell, so my comments may trickle in. I just don’t see enough nuance in the article, in particular with this paragraph:
But what about the player who is carrying the puck with his head down, another oft-cited example intended to show how impossibly complicated it is to ban headshots? In years past, the best way to move the puck forward was believed to be for a player to do it himself, stickhandling up the ice. Having his head down with his eyes focused on the puck was considered an advantage to him. It was only fair, then, that a defender have his own advantage and, unseen by the puck-carrier, be able to blast him. Now the best way to advance the puck is seen to be by passing, so a player with his head down is at a disadvantage already and doesn’t require further punishment. He can be easily stopped with no more than incidental contact. In such cases, a crushing hit to the head (e.g., Stevens on Lindros) is nothing less than an attempt to injure. The common explanations — “Because he deserved it” or “Because I can” — are not good enough in this age of concussions and dementia.
First, why does passing change the equation on having your head down? And second, even if we agree that it does, Lindros was carrying the puck up ice, the example of the old school style that justified the advantage for a D to blast a F. I’ve watched that hit literally at least 100 times. It doesn’t look like blatant head targeting to me. I’m sure Stevens could have gone out of his way to make sure he missed Lindros’ head, but I’m also sure that Lindros skating erect and looking forward doesn’t have his head in the contact zone (of course, he probably sees it coming and dodges, but even if he doesn’t, he just leaves his chest exposed, not his chin).
Obviously, this is all speculation.
It’s a lot of words for something that’s been said and something that people know. My main complaints are that a) I don’t think this gets written if it’s not Sid, and b) he forces examples into his conclusion when they may not be apt (the fighters, and ignoring the fact that the hit on Sid was accidental; what rule change would have changed that play?).
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Well on your second point Dryden has said a few times before that he thinks the hit on Sid was clearly intentional. So obviously he would think a head shot ban would have prevented it.
Release the Mackan!
by Killer_Carlson on Sep 30, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Right. Which is why he’s just jamming data points into his conclusion. The only possible way to see that hit as intentional is if you want to. If you are convinced that you have to see it as intentional. (Or maybe the only way to see it as unintentional is if you are convinced to see it as unintentional!) Whatever. He’s a goalie, a Cornell grad, a Canadian, and a politician. Could his opinion carry less weight with me?
Obviously, this is all speculation.

Just wanted to dot the i’s a bit on the Chimera discussion – I believe the Caps have far more fundamental issues than optimizing the contract of a role player like Jason. Does he fit the style Bruce wants to play? Yes – he has that skill you can’t coach, speed, well- liked by his teammates, and chips in from time to time with key goals.
No – the Caps have far greater issues from last year – fewest 1st period goals, league leading 11 shutouts against, feeble PP. The wheels won’t fall off the wagon because Jason Chimera scores 11 goals instead of 18: it will be because Ovie, Nicky, Sasha, Mike can’t find the back of the net anymore.
It’s an odd signing given the time and the player but it’s hardly an albatross. If this re-signing happened back before FA frenzy I may have had a different opinion either due to the money or the lack of “why the hell is he being resigned a week before the season?” but I’m hard pressed to see any reason to be truly upset by it. Agitated, miffed, sure.

“The Caps have bigger issues” is a bit of a cop-out. Of course they do. But that doesn’t mean that the littler issues shouldn’t be analyzed and potentially criticized. It doesn’t take long before a few slightly bad contracts turn into a real problem. It cost them Chris Bourque two years ago (which obviously didn’t hurt much… but y’never know), might have cost them Bill Guerin… it may be death by a million paper cuts, but that doesn’t mean each cut should be disregarded.

I’ve been thinking about this some this morning as it relates to the continued progression of Adam Larsson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins this morning.
Is it more “valuable” to have a “Franchise” Defenseman or a “Franchise” Centerman? I know center is the most important forward position, but I would think the former is more important, no? They’re on the ice more often, influence the play more, and a Dman who puts up 60-70 points is a zillion times more valuable to me than a forward who does the same.
As good as RNH could end up being, I still think EDM made a mistake by not taking Larsson first overall (when your top 2 DMen are Ryan Whitney and Tom Gilbert, and you gainfully employ Cam Barker, that’s a problem).

Doug Wilson agrees with you, according to the interview he did with FTF recently.
In practice I think it comes down to what the team already has, so it’ll differ. If you were starting a team from scratch, I think most people would probably go with a C. Even after Crosby, I bet the first few picks would be Cs, and maybe AO.
I’d like to look at whether teams suffer more when their 1C or 1D go down with injury.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
To extend a little on this, in terms of post-lockout champs, the breakdown could probably go either way on all sides, with 1Cs in Pittsburgh and Carolina, 1Ds in Boston and Anaheim, and the Wings and Hawks maybe having both?

My gut tells me that a truly elite (say, top-2 in the League) D is more valuable than a truly elite C. I feel like it flips when you’re talking about very-good-but-not-elite, though.
Given the development times involved, though, I think it’s a lot harder to predict what tier a prospect D ultimately reaches. And as you note the make up of the team informs your picks to a large extent.
Still, in a vacuum if I knew I could get an elite C or an elite D, I’d go for the D. The fact that you can’t know for sure complicates things.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
My answer would be yes.
Having a guy like Chara, Suter/Weber, Lidstrom and potentially Doughty is every bit as important as having Crosby, Sedin, Toews and potentially the Nuge.
Wingers are way, way down the list though. Ovechkin, in my opinion, is the only guy I’d want to say is a franchise winger unless you consider Malkin to be a winger. Anyone else isn’t nearly as important to invest in so heavily compared to a center or blueliner.
Hell, I’d say goalies are too. Even after what happened last year with Thomas — is it so hard to say Rask wouldn’t have been very comparable?
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn
Look, it wasn’t just Edmonton who screwed up. Larrsen went fourth overall! You can almost forgive the Oilers, but the Avs and Panthers… well, it’s more than foolish.
Well, the Avs and Panthers already have their “Franchise” D men in Eriks Johnson and Gudbranson, so I can see why they would have taken Landeskog and Huberdeau respectively.
Edmonton’s situation is unique to me, because you can make arguments for them taking either guy. They needed a set-up guy for Taylor Hall, and, as said before, their top 2 Dmen are Gilbert and Whitney, and they employ Cam Barker. Ultimately they decided the former was more important for them.

My issue is that I think RNH is more likely to be a wing in the NHL. We’ll see about it, but if he was a more prototypical C, instead of Patrick Kane playing C, then I think I’d be more OK with the pick. They are loaded at W, and I’m not sure RNH really fits a need. Guy oozes talent, though.

New (sorta) content on the front page.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Helmet Numbers – I went to practice yesterday and the players had the numbers on the front of the helmets, as has been reported will be the case across the League this season.
In the scheme of things, this change doesn’t bother me much and I think even if people notice it for one game, it will pretty quickly become background.
I am curious about seeing it during the game tonight, but again, I think it will fade into the background quickly even if people notice it for one game. If it improves game calling (it may for some) and assists the refs, then I prefer the number on the helmet front and leaving the front of the jerseys alone!
Numbers on helmets vs. on the front of jerseys is definitely the lesser of two evils (which is exactly how Wysh worded it the other day, I think).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
From my perspective, big different in terms of those two evils. Anyway, I’d seen the pictures and reactions, thought I’d chime in after seeing them in person at practice yesterday.
It’s so minor compared to other changes we have seen with the NHL.
Aren’t they TV numbers?

Not sure how this helps anyone other than broadcasters calling the games. Has there really been a problem with ref’s penalizing the wrong guy because he couldn’t see their number?

I considered that, but given where the numbers are on the helmet, I’m not sure they really help the refs any. The linesmen are huge, but the referees aren’t all that big, so unless the player has his head down, I can’t see a scenario where this would be helpful.
Plus, can you even read those numbers from the press box?
I’d love to see an explanation from the NHL.

Even if I don’t necessarily agree with the punishment for this specific hit (which I think might be a touch severe), this new discipline process sure is a breath of fresh air. Those who think he’s heavy-handed have to at least appreciate that he’s applying a logic, and consistently.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
I asked the question on Teh Twitterz, but figured it might be good for discussion here – who do you think will be the first Cap to feel Shanny’s wrath (i.e. get suspended – no need to dig up the Knuble YouTube)?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
My guesses were AO, Green, and Brouwer. AO and Green have been the most aggressive hitters, not necessarily in terms of numbers for Green, but the style that they hit is very explosive and violent. Brouwer is a big hitter and he may be amped up early in the season and try to impress teammates and coaches.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Most logical three … If it wasn’t for Brouwer coming off a shoulder injury, he’d be my first pick given his style of play and number of hits.
I know there was a little discussion on it earlier in the week, but for the sake of discipline, who on the Caps would currently be considered a “repeat offender”?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
AO and Green I’m sure would. I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head. I don’t think Ward, Wideman or Hamrlik have anything dirty in the past. Chimera hasn’t as a Cap, maybe in CBJ he got dinged.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
I think I’ve got Backis in Sheriff Shanny’s spotlight. Two years ago his hits were clean and seamless – last year he started jumping a little ugly. He prolly should’ve sat for the hit he concussed Marcel Goc with.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
___
Per Shanny (in the Puck Daddy interview):
It’s become pretty clear that having previous suspensions on a player’s record is a big factor in your decision-making process. The CBA puts a statute of limitations on suspensions remaining on a player’s record; for a guy like Jody Shelley, are you taking into account his entire history or what’s on his record?
After 18 months, a player’s repeat-offender category, which is used for calculation of a fine, resets. But as far as a player’s historical incidents, they all still can come into the judgment and they always have.
I see a distinction between a repeat offender and someone who has a history of violent infractions. For instance, when a player’s in that 18-month category, instead of being susceptible for the loss of 1/185th of his pay, it sets down to 1/82nd of his pay. After 18 months of no incidents, it resets.
By that, I’m pretty sure Ovi and Green are both in the clear as a repeat offender with regards to fines (though who really cares).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah, I don’t care about fines. I care about games missed. And it seems clear that with the nature of AO and Green’s hits, they’ll be under a microscope if they do that again.
But if AO needs to be running around killing people and risking suspensions to be the player he was, I think I’d take that. Neutered AO is a problem for this team.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Sure. That was my point with “who really cares.”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah, I just feel like being redundant today, so I’ll repeat what you said and beat dead horses.
Obviously, this is all speculation.

That’s a good guess. Wonder if Shanny would’ve dinged him for Goc.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Seems likely given what’s happening in the pre-season. I mean, I haven’t watched any games so far, but there have been like 37 suspensions. Seems only logical that every clean hit is being punished, so Nick probably would have seen 5-10 games.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Him and Letang would have been suspended for irresponsible hits.

When he put Spezza into the boards — it wasn’t dirty, but it wasn’t a smart hit to make in that situation and Spezza ended up separating his shoulder in the incident. Way too close to the boards to be shoving someone like that.

Isles and vet tryouts – I’m surprised to see they signed Staios given how he has looked the last few seasons. I figured it was just to get enough vets in games during the preseason like they did last year (this time inviting Pandolfo and Staios.)
per Dreger Staios signs a 1 year deal with Isles
Well VAN just used PTOs to get to the vet limit? I think NYI only signed him to actually play. It’s a very young team, I think they just want more bodies and some experience.

If it wasn't clear, I have a man-crush on Mike Babcock
“So, the interesting thing about the league now, and I don’t doubt his shoulder hit his head … is there any responsibility on the puck carrier, toe-dragging, sliding sideways, to look after himself,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said after the game. "Is there or no? It doesn’t appear like there is anymore, is there?
“You come across the middle toe-dragging like this (has head down, looking at pretend puck), jumping up, and you get dinged,” Babcock continued. “I’m not saying our guy isn’t guilty, because the shoulder hit his head … you better not put yourself in those situations is what I would say. There will be a video report on it tomorrow, I’m sure.”
Obviously, this is all speculation.

That is why I am very interested in seeing the Shanahan video. It will set the precedence on if players are their brother’s keeper or not. I can see both sides, and I’m definitely on the “not suspension worthy” side but I can clearly see that hits to the head are going to be punished even if there is some shared blame.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

At least it’s thoughtful, but I hate the focus on the injury. I also think saying “the body moved, but the head didn’t” is bogus. If the body moved, that’s important. The body would have been the target, but when that moved the head was all that was left. If the body didn’t move, the head wouldn’t have been hit, the shoulder would have.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
I was originally against a suspension, but Shanny’s video actually did a decent job of convincing me otherwise. I’m still worried about these suspensions’ deterrent effect on all open ice hits, though.
And the fact that it takes responsibility off the puck carrier. I think we’ll see a lot more head down and reckless dekes. No real reason not to put yourself in a vulnerable position any more.
I’m ok with a suspension, I’m glad he thought it through, I just don’t agree with the severity or the logic.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Yeah, I guess I can’t disagree with it. So long as he remains consistent — I guess he has guys in mind like Umberger who spend their entire career with their head down who don’t seem to know any better.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

See, I see Shanny’s point in the 5 games as being this: B. Smith had enough time and speed that he could have taken the player out easily without going near the head so it doesn’t matter if the shooter lowered his head a little more. If you start off behind the shooter and skate ahead of him then turn back and deliver the check from the front and only connect with the shooter’s head (in this case entirely accidentally), than you were still reckless because there was time from a forceful full body check from the side.

I agree with this statement, and I think Shanahan’s point was more that Brendan Smith could have continued to target the body or the shoulder, rather than the head. Furthermore, if you’re skating towards the goal with the puck like that, you’re not going to turn and look behind you to make sure that nobody’s about to come take your head off. This seems pretty cut and dry to me.
A couple of things I’d like to see from Shanahan going forward:
1) Don’t say that people will be considered “repeat” offenders, but instead consider them “prior” offenders.
2) Cite previous suspensions that you’ve handed out as precedent for your decision.
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.

Smith obviously knew Smith was coming for him, or else why the toe drag? This wasn’t an ambush out of nowhere like Cooke or Richards.
Obviously, this is all speculation.

dSmith wasn’t behind oSmith, iirc. I’ll have to watch the video again to be sure, but I think oSmith probably should have seen him coming had he not be staring at the puck. But at the same time, I still think dSmith targeted the head.
let’s just say that I’m happy I don’t have Shanny’s job in this case.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Supporting autism awareness and treatment.
ah, I think in an effort for brevity I mistyped the event.
See from where I was looking, B. was behind the play because he is a defenseman skating facing his own goal as the play crosses his blue line. Skating flat out (and because the puck carrier lost speed controlling the puck) B got ahead of the play and then turned hard right, automatically causing him to slow down and still hit the puck carrier in the head.
As for targeting the head, I don’t think it was intentional. I do think it was meant to level the guy and he had time to hit from the side, but B didn’t seem to lower himself as Ben Smith’s head went lower.
let’s just say that I’m happy I don’t have Shanny’s job in this case.

Just watched the video. Can anything be read into the actual announcement of the penalty?
The department of player safety has decided that Brendan Smith…
In the previous videos, Shanahan has said:
I have decided to suspend PlayerX…
I will be curious to see if the new language is what he uses going forward. Otherwise, perhaps he disagreed, but went with consensus in the office instead.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
It’d be comforting to know that this is more of a collective decision rather than one guy deciding. There’s plenty of room for debate on many of these hits…

I’m buying into DGB’s video too much but everything they’ve done so far is fantastic. I can only imagine Campbell’s thought process was exactly “and there was no clear HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT GUY GET SMOKED IN THE BACKGROUND?” and that was the extent of reviewing plays for suspensions.

So according to BB (via Whyno), Mathieu Perreault isn’t going to lose his roster spot just because he’s missing a game due to a minor injury.
Should we be reading anything into the fact that Sjogren’s a healthy scratch and Halpern/Hendricks/Beagle are playing again?
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
I’d read more into the fact that this is the last pre-season game, MP isn’t playing, and he’s “not losing his roster spot.” If he doesn’t lose it now, doesn’t that mean he’s going to be on the opening night roster?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Well, there’s one more preseason game at Chicago. And if Sjogren could conceivably stick on the roster along with Perreault if he outplays Jay Beagle for a fourth-line wing position (which seems pretty unlikely).

BB said MP has to skate tomorrow in order to play the last pre-season game on Sunday. Sjogren hasn’t done squat in pre-season so I don’t think he’s taking Beagle’s spot, but Eakin is starting tonight. I guess we’ll see. No one has really talked about this, but what happens to DJ King. They can’t possibly be keeping him?

I know it wasn’t, and I’m in complete agreement. If Poti is on LTIR there’s no reason to not use all the money he allows. Gouldie’s FanPost called King making the roster right after the announcement.
And obviously the guys that have upside should be playing. King is a guy that can be an emergency player that they bring on road trips while the talent develops.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Yes, Gouldie hit a homerun on that.

Is that a testy reply? I hope I didn’t offend, but let me rephrase my response. It would make sense to me to send someone who makes his living in the press box and keep a player who can contribute. I do understand though, that it might be better to keep some of these youngins’ in Hershey so they can play on a regular basis.
Not testy at all. I just think you’re dead wrong that there’s “no room on the roster” and they “have to send him to Hershey.” No offense taken.
I don’t think we disagree on King’s value…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think it’s likely they’re keeping King, at least for now. No salary-based reason not to (given Poti on LTIR) and Eakin and Sjogren need to play, not sit in the press box. My guess is King stays.
