Now with the Caps propensity to give up shorties on the PP, in addition to not scoring, is it time for a new approach to the PP? Maybe, instead of having regular PP units, PP time should be given (2 units worth) to the guys who’ve been working hardest during games during the past week. This would likely include either stars, grinders, or both during a given week.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
I say stick with your guns. I was watching a Luc Robitalle (sp?) feature on NHLNet last night before the start of the 7pm game and I distinctly remember him saying that one of his fond memories of Scotty Bowman was how no matter how bad the PP was going, he kept throwing those same 5 out there EVERY time until they got it. He recalled a couple long goal-less streaks on the PP and how he kept putting the group out there regardless of if they scored or not. He said it really instilled a confidence in that group.
Another thing he mentioned was Kris Draper having 20 goals that season (that he was referring to with the lengthy goal-less PP’s) and Scotty told him he would never see PP time; as his job was to kill penalties whether he had 2 goals or 20 goals on the year).

The last two shorthanded goals were caused, in part, by Ovechkin playing at the blueline during the powerplay. He’s one of the best 3 forwards in the world, but he’s not a defenseman, and it showed the last two games.
That’s a stretch blaming Ovechkin in any way on last night’s shortie when it was all caused by Carlson’s flub. He played it the best he could and almost blocked Pavelski’s shot. Not much else he could do there.
I’m not blaming him fully, but he didn’t play that 2-on-1 very well.
He’s not a defenseman; you should expect him to make that play.
Where the PP is now quarterbacked by Brett Lebda.

You do have a good point on Luc Robitaille fondly recalling Scott Bowman’s management of the PP — throwing the same 5 guys out there until they “got” it. But the question is … how long can it go on before one admits that a PP grouping, as constituted, is a failure? Granted, patience is a virtue and breaking up a grouping after a few bad games may not be the wisest strategy but how long can a scoreless drought go on before admitting failure?
Is the answer more work on PP drills in practice?

Meh. The Rangers have the best record in the East against the West (10-5). Philadelphia’s 7-5-3, Boston is 3-7-2. I wouldn’t put much stock into it.

Locker said at the end of the game that the Caps are 0-10-1 in the Shark Tank over the last 11 games there. I’m guessing many people were already asleep when he said that, so I feel it’s worth repeating. Good thing the Caps do not play there very often.

You’re hallucinating. Last win was 10/30/93 – the next closest thing to a win was a 3-3 tie (yeesh, remember those??) on 12/10/97. And they actually didn’t even have a game at the Shark Tank in 2004.

NHL.com’s video player = fail
Every time you hit PAUSE and then play again it starts over from the beginning
Windows 7 w/ IE.
And don’t give me that “Switch to firefox” stuff. If someone can’t make a video player that works with IE, they suck
Switch to Chrome.

“Switch to Chrome”
As a web programmer, I can tell you, when programming some UI for a commercial web site, it’s not a viable option to tell users “OH you’re having trouble with the #1 browser? Switch to something else”
Sure it is. Fuck those IE using clowns.

So wait… the NHL engineered its browser to work best on an application that maybe 12 people on the planet use? There is dumb, and there is that.
I use a variety of IE versions, and this same problem plagues each one. I use a variety of Firefox applications (and I’m a fan of Firefox and despise everything Microsoft as an insult to laws of nature), and the same problem is there.
My experience with the NHL web site is that it was conceptualized by chimps and engineered by hamsters. It is, without competition, the worst sports web site I’ve found in terms of being able to navigate it. If Columbus had such navigation, we’d be speaking Wajarri today.

kinda getting OT but
IE is the big violator when it comes to Web Browser standards. Chrome and FF adhere to the norm but IE kind of “does its own thing”. So yes, you can blame IE for sucking.
But that doesn’t excuse the programmers for not taking into account that IE is stil the largest market share.
On a side note, I don’t know if capitals.nhl.com uses the same software for video but often times I find their video player gives me even more trouble than nhl.com
I thought all the NHL websites were pretty much standardized.
This sig is brought to you by... Frungy, The Sport of Kings!
More OT, but this isn’t a browser thing, but a Flash thing. Chrome has its own embedded version of the Flash plugin. IE/Firefox/Safari use the plugin installed on your machine. Chrome probably works b/c it’s using an updated version of the Flash plugin that is slightly less crappy on the NHL site than the previous versions.

"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek
In reality, the chances of pulling out a point, nevermind a win last night were pretty slim. They haven’t won in San Jose in something like 17 years ( if I heard correctly), playing at 10:30 their time, in the second of a back-to-back and third in four nights against a red-hot team that had just come back from a long road trip. The schedule makers certainly didn’t do them any favors and still they had the better chances in the first two periods. In the third, you could see San Jose had more energy. Yet if Laich puts the puck in a wide-open net, they could have pulled it off.
They haven’t won in San Jose in something like 17 years
Honest question – how much does that actually have to do with anything, besides being a fun talking point?
"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek
by Chris Burton on Feb 18, 2011 8:54 AM EST up reply actions
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that San Jose is one of the best home teams in the league, their bulding is one of the loudest and traveling and playing in the west is far more difficult for eastern conference teams because of the time change than it is the other way around. And there are just some buildings were the Caps don’t play well (i.e. Buffalo).
I think it also has a lot to do with the home ice advantage of the far western teams like SJS and Vancouver. Teams from the eastern time zones tend not to do very well out there.
I blame Schultz

Living in the Bay Area, I go to a Sharks game or two every year (including last night’s) and can attest that it is very loud. Last night was interesting though, because the crowd seemed pretty nervous until the 3rd goal. They were definitely in awe of Ovi. This isn’t news, but it was also quite evident by the 3rd period that the Caps were tired. They were completely outplayed and out-hussled throughout most of the 3rd and probably most of the 2nd half of the 2nd. Unfortunately it was exactly what I expected given the circumstances.
I was impressed with the number of Caps fans there though. I can remember going to a game 7 or 8 years ago and the number was much smaller.
I’m excited for the Heritage Classic this Sunday. Looks like it’s going to be a great show.

Also, did you grab this pic off the net or do you really have a signed Pat Falloon hockey card in your possession? Cause that would be pretty awesome.
I grabbed the pic off the net. However, I do have a Link Gaetz-signed hockey card. I don’t remember getting a Pat Falloon, and have no idea where my Link Gaetz card is. Anyone know what happened to the Missing Link? He was playing minor hockey up until a few years ago.

Buy or sell: the latest Caps (CI) meme that “Ovi is Back”. I for one don’t know where I stand, but at least staying up late the last two nights, it’s fun again to watch Ovi out there and I don’t want to get up and miss a shift. At least that dulls the funk the team is in.
Everything sounds smarter in Tikkanesse....
Buying with 30-day return. I’d say things are ever so slightly trending to the good for Ovie and the team as a whole. Glimmers.

Not sure either, though I’m slightly in the “buy” camp. He has looked more engaged. Though part of me thinks it’s a bit a product of playing teams that don’t see him has much and therefore aren’t as good at “Ovi D”. I’d like to see a nice goal or two from him against Buff/Pens/Rags before I’m totally there.

From Becca's game recap
“Weird stat of the night: Dave Steckel and Semin took (and lost) exactly the same number of faceoffs…one.”
I assume that means B. Gordon was taking the important D Zone draws. Gordon obviously is quite good in the circle though it does seem odd that the best face off guy in the league isn’t taking the important draws in the D zone.
I found this interesting as well. I’m too lazy to go back and look, but how did Steckel fare in the dot in the last game against the Sharks? I wonder if Pavelski or someone else on the Sharks just has Stecks’ number and you figure with the last change the Sharks could get the favorable matchup.

Well, Elliot was gonna be a RFA this year and is due to be paid less over the rest of the season, so couldn’t they have held onto him and received some sort of compensation in return for another team signing him if they decided not to?
Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems. - Homer Simpson
$900,000 is a fortune to anyone. I worked for a company in the top 10 of the fortune 100 once, they unscrewed every third light bulb in the parking garage to save money. They are the cheapest of all.
I don’t see how it’s a salary dump for Ottawa though. Both are FAs at the end of the season and one makes $900,000 versus $2,125,000 .
Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems. - Homer Simpson
Ottawa knows Elliot isn’t in their plans, so they got rid of him without needing to tender him a contract.
I guess.
I blame Schultz
If they know he’s not in their plans, why would they trade for someone else they know is not in their plans but have to pay more money to? Unless they want to win some more games.
Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems. - Homer Simpson
Duchene hurt, team in the shitter, can’t really make it worse, can they? Might as well try to get one of those studs at the top of the draft and maybe re-sign Anderson next year. Elliott gives them a better shot at a higher lottery pick, if that’s what they’re optimizing for.

From today's Dreger Report re: Ian White
Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Ian White’s future remains somewhat in limbo, although there’s a sense White’s trade could get finalized today.
White was reportedly at the Hurricanes’ morning skate.
At this time of year, the logistics of the salary cap are time consuming and often teams not directly involved in one trade are stalled in their attempts to make a deal because of what other teams are trying to do.
It’s possible White’s situation may be – in some form – indirectly tied in to what the Boston Bruins are doing (secondarily) in trying to create cap flexibility for the Kaberle trade. Bruins defenceman Mark Stuart’s name is included among some of the teams believed to be interested in White.

I asked this on Twitter, but:
Given that Colborne is considered a 1C prospect (Corey Pronman rates him higher than Kadri, for example) and is the best prospect in Boston’s system, the analogous trade for the Caps would be Kuznetsov + 1st + conditional pick.
What kind of assets would have to be coming back to make that trade worth it for you?

For me, I have a tough time envisioning a guy outside the set of ‘1C on a value contract’. It’d have to be a hell of a return to net that haul and I can’t imagine doing that for a rental short of one of the top five players in the league, which Kaberle certainly isn’t.

Boston gave up a lot, but I wouldn’t call it a swindling.
Burke got superb value as a team that was potentially going to lose their best d-man for nothing. Colbourne is automatically that team’s best prospect now, better than Kadri.
Meanwhile, including the Atlanta transaction, Boston is positively brolic, fast approaching Philly’s ridiculous team depth. Even with Savard out, they are now as strong as anyone in the east down the middle – Krecj, Peverley, Kelly, Bergeron, Seguin (probably a winger now though).
by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 18, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions
I still think the Flyers are better down the middle with Carter/Richards/Briere/Betts/Giroux, even if one or two of them is playing wing at the time. Four of those guys can play 1C on at least a few teams in the NHL, which is pretty damn ridiculous. At worst, none of the four are worse than a 2C and all of them except Briere are excellent two-way forwards.

This still doesn’t justify the Kessel trade. It’s not like Kaberle couldn’t have been traded without that trade. Maybe BOS doesn’t give up their first if they don’t have TOR’s, but the comparison is between:
Kessel + BOS 2011 1st + Colborne + conditional pick
or
Seguin + TOR 2011 1st + TOR 2010 2nd+ BOS 2011 1st + Colborne + conditional pick
Burke helped to reduce some of the negative effects of the Kessel trade, but that doesn’t justify the trade itself.

I’m not justifying the Kessel trade, but I’m saying that Chiarelli is no longer clearly winning the transactions between he and Burke.
By the way, these trades have been in the division. I think we can safely hang up the notion that GMs won’t do that – there have been large transactions between divisional opponents in the last few years.

They’re not and as I said above, I don’t see trading a guy who looks like he has 1st line ability, plus a first, plus a conditional second for a rental in any season, unless I was getting an ultra-star on a rental. You’d have to be Jesus on skates to make that trade work in terms of value.
If the Caps were in the position that Vancouver or Philly is in now, with dominant rosters and adding another player significantly improved their chances (especially with the inevitable injuries the playoffs bring), I’d think about it. But I just don’t see a pure rental commanding those assets and making it worth it.

I’ve been saying that for a while now. Basically, they need one or both of Johansson and Perreault to start beating their minutes and for Tom Poti and Mike Green to play more than half of the games. Wouldn’t hurt for Boyd Gordon to stay in the lineup either, but that’s just not realistic at this point.
I’m also not convinced that Bruce can get it done. Add a new coach and my position might change. Stress might.

I am actually shocked that more people aren’t upset that Peverley didn’t come to the Caps. I thought he’d be great as a 2C here – good playmaker, great wheels, good defensively.
I guess Atlanta didn’t want to trade him in the division, and plus Blake Wheeler is the prototypical Rick Dudley player – big and skates well.
No way Peverley is traded in division. Just no way, not when Atlanta is contending.

All the moves done deal now, already up on espn.com. Now that is wheeling and dealing. If this team shows signs of life over the next couple games and the Stars keep free falling I might almost buy making a big move for Brad Richards. I just wish I knew if that would be enough to make us a contender or if the current malaise requires more.

Two things, assuming Dallas is certifiable and decide to get rid their second best player in the middle of a tight playoff race:
1) He has concussion symptoms. Scary stuff with all the recent developments.
2) Would he even help THAT much? I know he’d help if he plays, but would it get this team to the ECF and beyond? Doubtful in my mind.
3) It would take a lot, especially with what Kaberle just garnered. 1st + Kuz/Johansson + maybe Holtby.
by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 18, 2011 2:06 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, and frankly I don’t want to be giving up Kuz/Johannson, a 1st, and one of our goalie for a rental in a year when it’s clear we need more than just a 2C as we are playing right now.

Even in the hockey news among all the trades, there are real-life reminders that watching hockey is entertainment.

Thoughts and prayers for former Hershey Bear/Portland Pirate/Chesapeake Icebreaker/SC Stingray (among other teams) Kirk Daubenspeck.

So much for a spike at the box office for the homecoming of one of the heroes of RIT’s Frozen Four run.
The Hershey Bears are coming to Rochester to play the Amerks on Friday night but goalie Jared DeMichiel won’t be accompanying them.

Watching ESPN right now, special about Dale Earnhardt dying at the Daytona 500. A lot of the stuff they’re saying sounds exactly like the current state of safety in hockey.
Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems. - Homer Simpson
In short, it took a really serious injury, in this case death, to the icon of the sport to really accelerate safety in the sport. Sure it had been moving in the right direction, but nowhere as quickly as after Earnhardt’s death. I know nothing about Nascar or this situation so maybe someone with a little more knowledge would be of some help here. Another interesting factor is that Earnhardt was one of the most vocal advocates of the old ways, of keeping the traditional methods of safety in the sport; the irony is evident. The leading proponent of limiting novel safety measures in fact actually jump started a whole new safety movement with is death (I’m not sure this relates to hockey much but it was interesting nonetheless). There were some other parallels, but they are slipping my mind at the moment. I have to believe that if someone was to die as a result of some sort of blindside hit or unnecessary act of violence, safety measures would move forward more quickly; however, with hockey there is only so much you can implement. You can always make cars and racetracks safer, and while to some extent you can improve hockey equipment, it ultimately comes down to the responsibility of your fellow combatants. In racing, if you put someone into the wall or basically put them in significant danger, there is a very high chance that you will also be put into a perilous situation. Perhaps some of this logic would be deemed useful in the hockey realm. If you put someone career in jeopardy, perhaps yours should be as well (as a result of official discipline, not vigilantism). While that may be an extreme example, it’s message could be useful in cases of lesser proportions. If you deliberately end someone’s season with a knee-on-knee hit or vicious board, maybe ending your season should be a talking point among the NHL. Anyways, not a sermon, just a thought.

TB acquires Eric Brewer from STL in exchange for prospect Brock Beukeboom and a 3rd round draft pick
On Beukeboom
3rd round choice of TB in 2010 6’2 196 lbs. From Hockey’s Future:
Beukeboom is the son of former NHL defenseman Jeff Beukeboom. He is a defensive defenseman that also has some offensive ability and a skill component to his game. Beukeboom can play with a mean streak when warranted, but is more of a two-way player than was his father, who was one of the tougher players on the Wayne Gretzky-led Oilers and won four Stanley Cups. The younger Beukeboom, a forward during much of his youth hockey career, has the ability to join the attack and has a hard shot. As expected, he is still dealing with learning the position and is sometimes caught outside the play. And he will need to improve his agility and read-and-respond time as he progresses to pro hockey. Beukeboom has a strong work ethic and is constantly seeking to improve.

Eric Brewer is pretty terrible by the ol’ eye test.

IMO – Eric Brewer wasn’t going to be resigned by the Blues. There was talk over the summer of taking his “C” and giving it to Backes or Johnson.
Trading this captain is not impactful to the Blues as trading another Captain might be. I don’t see him as a leader.

Blues sit 13th in the West, 9 points out of the playoffs.
Does this move signal them as sellers, and if so, any potential C’s the caps might look at?
There are really no C’s in STL that the Caps will be able to get and want. Backes isn’t going anywhere. McDonald might be good, but at 4.7 for the next two years after that I can’t see the Caps biting, and I can’t see the Blues selling as they have no one to replace him. Their O is fairly weak. But McDonald might work as a good 2C for the Caps.

TJ Oshie still roll with the Blues? Probably won’t let him go though.

Does this sound familiar? It could be about the Caps, but is about the Flames:
“I said for a long time that when we follow the system and we work hard, that we can beat anybody in the National Hockey League,” Feaster added. “When we don’t follow the system or when we try to take short cuts and don’t work hard, then we’re in trouble. We can’t just rely on our talent alone. It has to be our talent level supported by our work ethic. And that’s really what has happened over the last couple of months.”
Wow. Lots of deals went down today
Hours after sending captain Eric Brewer to Tampa Bay for junior defenseman Brock Beukeboom and a draft pick, the Blues dealt Johnson, also a defenseman, to the Avs along with forward Jay McClement and a first-round pick for rookie defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, third-year forward Chris Stewart and a second-round pick.
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
I swear the Caps modo is
The playoffs are our stanley cup. Who needs to advance?
