I disagree with the sentiment and expected some of it. We shouldn’t pretend that “journalism” like that doesn’t exist, or it’ll just increase in prevalence. I think it’s important to read that crap and tear the shit out of it and its purveyors.
I wholeheartedly approve of Em including it in today’s Clips.

See, the thing is that it’s been torn apart before. In his world we shouldn’t wear our teams’ jerseys to opposing team arenas because it’ll be our fault if we get curb stomped.
In between Errey’s comment last week and this, I’m glad* we willingly devour red meat like this to get unnecessarily worked up. And by glad I mean whatever the opposite of what glad is.

Not sure how unnecessary it is to be made aware that explosive allegations lobbed at the franchise player for the team we all follow exist in semi-credible (and perhaps wholly credible) forums. I take it you’d have left it out of Clips altogether?
Moreover, not every reaction is a “worked up” one – saying Errey’s a douche for his actions in a press scrum doesn’t mean anyone’s blood pressure is raised.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think considering how much of a fool he’s made out of himself nationally in the last 8 months on his own, it would have been better to omit it from Clips and keep him (and this vitriol you’re calling allegations) within Washington and Greene counties.

I guess that’s fair (though I had no idea about the Stow stuff until after we ran this). It certainly wasn’t a slam-dunk decision to run it and definitely not one that we were thrilled to see come up.

John Steigerwald is a bomb thrower whose heretofore biggest claim to fame might have been blaming Bryan Stow for his own beating after a Giants-Dodgers baseball game (he misspelled Stow’s name in the piece, no longer available from the O-R Web site). The only “fact” in which he ever seems interested in his “reporting” is that his name be spelled right by those who would refer to him. The only “whispers and maybe even some out-loud conversations around the hockey world” he hears are those in his own head.

You know, he’s got a point:
2006-07 – 85 points
2007-08 – 106 points
2008-09 – 113 points
2009-10 – 77 points, and an appearance at the winter olympics
2010-11 – 37 points
Granted, he’s had injury problems that caused some point declines, but we all know that one of the biggest benefits of steroids is to help you recover from injuries faster. Yup, that olympic appearance seems to have been the turning point when this player quit juicing.

More Circumstantial Evidence for You to Consider
Circumstantial evidence, your honor. Doctors, chiropractors, George Laracque (sic). The case against Ovechkin is clear. But, if that’s not enough. I give you more.
Thierry Henry. Roger Federer. Tiger Woods. Derek Jeter. Kaka. Alex Ovechkin. That is all you need to know.
All these athletes saw a drop off in performance after becoming pitchmen for Gillette:
- After the infamous non-handball call against Ireland, Henry is now relegated to MLS, a huge drop off for a World Cup hero.
- Federer is now ranked 3rd after years at number 1.
- Woods, nuff said.
- Jeter suffered through injuries and one of his worst pro seasons ever in 2011.
- Kaka got ejected from a game vs. Ivory Coast in the 2010 World Cup, and Brazil flamed out against the Netherlands.
- Alex Ovechkin.
Your honor. If the PEDs circumstantial evidence isn’t sufficient, I offer the Gillette evidence as an alternative. The athletes I listed all suffered a career downturn when associated with Gillette. You can’t ignore it.
I am sure Steigerwald will write about this shortly and am, quite frankly, shocked he’s ignored it thus far.

Visualizing Realignment

If you ask me, I dig it. There’s one obvious problem — the Western Conference has 16 teams and the Eastern Conference has 14. But that can be easily solved by shifting Detroit or Columbus on over — assuming Phoenix doesn’t move to Hamilton.
Sure beats the lazy realignment, anyway.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
There is no perfect answer to realignment but I understand why the Florida teams may have an issue with this proposal. Sure Detroit and Dallas, for two examples, have had to deal with geographic issues with the current alignment, but sure not favorable for the Florida teams (other than not a time zone issue.)
I think the Panthers ownership will love it actually. They will draw extremely well with those division opponents.

Donny from LBC probably could add to this, but I would think based on snowbird population the Habs, Leafs, Sabres, and Bruins would all draw well.

It makes it hard for the Florida teams to build natural rivalries if they’re that far away. To me, it looks like the Florida teams were added as an afterthought.
by jopierce on Dec 4, 2011 11:19 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions
not added as an afterthought, imo. “sacrificed” to win the support of the old Patrick teams. The existing Atlantic has been very vocal that they will block any proposal to split them up. This configuration also buys Washington’s support.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$592.66!
That division with Florida and Tampa Bay makes some sense, looks ridiculous. The only more ridiculous divisions I’ve seen are a handful of congressional districts.
Of course, you could move Columbus to the east, and then have a northeastern division with BOS, MTL, OTT, TOR, BUF, NYR, NYI, and NJD, with a southern division of WSH, PHI, PIT, CBJ, CAR, TBL, FLA. That avoids splitting any traditional rivalries (as much as NBC might be trying to sell the world on a NYR-PHI rivalry, and as much as Devils fans might think they have a rivalry with the Flyers), while also evening up the conferences and the divisions.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
Well they are also getting away from “Eastern” and “Western” and the first two rounds of the playoffs are in the division, then the 4 winners are re-seeded 1-4. So the only real issue would be that some divisions are 7 and some are 8, it’s a bit unfair for those that have 8 (I’m not personally all that concerned with that.)
Please, call me F&B.
Yeah, I just don’t know how you get around that. If that extra team in the division makes the difference, then you aren’t a contender anyway, IMO. Obviously it’s not that simple, some owners would love to just have an inside chance to get 1 playoff round and the revenue, even if they aren’t contenders.
I just don’t want to let the perfect get in the way of the good here. This is by far the best alignment proposal I’ve seen. And if they want to expand to 32 for 4 divisions of 8, they can do that in the future. Now is obviously not the time for it.
Please, call me F&B.
Up to 32 or down to 28 …
Agree there is a lot of good in the 4 division proposals, several versions of which we have seen discussed the last few months.
I don’t think down to 28 is ever going to happen. The owners and the union will fight that tooth and nail.
Please, call me F&B.
And I have a hard time believing that two more teams will happen, either. That means Phoenix stays and you have to build two new teams during a down economy and hope there are fans to support them. There are only a handful of cities where it could be stable. To even out the divisions they would have to both be in the East, which would make Quebec City proponents happy. But the Florida teams just don’t make sense where they are, so even though the realignment for Caps fans is great, it’s more balanced if the Floridas moved back to be in the same division as the Caps, just because of geography. The Florida GMs will never go for a realignment that puts nearly an entire coast between them and their division opponents.
by jopierce on Dec 4, 2011 12:15 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions
Well I said now is obviously not the right time. I also don’t see why it has to mean that PHX stays where they are. And in terms of building new teams, Kansas City already has an arena and is looking for a team. That means you’d just need one more ownership group to bring a team somewhere. I don’t think that’s unrealistic when the economy rebounds.
I also think it’s presumptive to assume what the FL owners will accept. If the ticket sales increase because of the snowbird populations then I think they might be ok with it.
Please, call me F&B.
The GM’s may not like it, but their owners, one of whom is from Boston I would add, may. Even with a slight increase in travel costs they would likely wind up making more money with this alignment from ticket sales.

I like the division realigment proposal, hate the proposed playoff change. Are the Stanley Cup Playoffs not good enough now? What am I missing?
Divisional playoffs create rivalries? I thought that was the preferred format, since creating new rivalries now is tough.

They do two rounds “in conference(which is really division)” and then they re-seed the four conference winners 1-4 and have them do a final-four playoffs.
Please, call me F&B.
Wow.
And I guess you play something like 30ish games against your own Divonference and 15ish against each other Confvision each year (and yes, I know that adds up to 75).
In other words, two home and away series within your own Condivonference each year is 24-28 games. One home and away series against everyone in the other Divonfvisions: 44-46 games per year. Spread the remaining 10 or so in whatever way makes sense.
I think I like it. But I’m not sure.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
by Gould Old Days on Dec 4, 2011 2:56 PM EST up reply actions
Pulling from my post in the Recap last night, I was guessing about how they would allocate the remaining 24 games after the 58 home-and-home games. It would be either 2 or 3 in-conference games (in addition to the 2 from the home-and-home), with a hypothetical schedule as follows:
Two Additional In-Conf. Game Sched.
7T-Conf Team
2g vs ea in-conf team = 12g
1g vs ea team of an 8T-conf = 8g
4g vs the other 7T-conf = 4g
8T-Conf Team
2g vs ea in-conf team = 14g
1g vs ea team of an 7T-conf = 7g
3g vs the other 8T-conf = 3g
Three Additional In-Conf. Game Sched.
7T-Conf Team
3g vs ea in-conf team = 18g
6g vs the other 7T-conf = 6g
8T-Conf Team
3g vs ea in-conf team = 21g
3g vs the other 8T-conf = 3g
Our it could just be the rest of the games in your own conference, but that would be a little too repetitive for me. I’d like the Caps to play the Bruins more than twice a year, and maybe get to see the Red Wings or the Sharks for an extra engagement every other year.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
With two rounds of in-conference playoffs, I think you really need to make a heavy in-conference schedule. That playoff format makes conference play much more important so I think you need to reward that. Trying to do a balanced schedule with imbalanced conferences exacerbates the unfair nature of 7 v. 8 team conferences. In a conference-heavy schedule where the top 4 teams in the conference make the playoffs I think it’s ok to have imbalanced conferences. Of course, there will be a lot of repetition, and some serious hatred, which is cool.
Please, call me F&B.
I get that point. To keep the 7T and 8T Conferences equal in each team’s opportunity to get to the playoffs, I’d advocate the “3 additional games vs each in-conference team” approach, so that you don’t have the 8T Conf teams complaining that it takes more games to secure a playoff spot than in the 7T Conf. And 6 or 3 extra out-of-conference games would give the NHL some marketing flexibility too.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
The schedule plan I’ve heard is that all teams play a home-and-home with everyone not in conference and the rest are in conference:
7 team conference: 2 vs. non-conf opponents: 46, 6 vs conf opponents: 36, Total is 82
8 team conference: 2 vs. non-conf opponents: 44, 5 vs. conf opponents: 35 for 79, then 3 additional games in the half of the conference from the prev. year’s finish, meaning the first through fourth place teams would play an additional game against each other, ditto for the fifth through eighth place. That way each team gets an additional 3 games, bringing the total to 82.

Great as this is an all… what happens if/when PHX moves to QBC?
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
There is no Eastern and Western Conference in this alignment. All four divisions are conferences in their own right. The imbalance means that in an 8 team division, 4 teams miss the playoffs and in a 7 team division, only 3 do.

I would be inclined to stick Detroit with the Northeast teams and Columbus with the old Patrick Division teams. But then the Central would need another team to join them. I would choose Colorado but they might not be happy to be away from the other teams in the Mountain Standard time zone.
I would have also been inclined to have broken out the East differently but, given that they want to keep the old Atlantic and Northeast divisions intact, that won’t happen.
Of course, realignment would be a lot simpler if two teams in the West were added but the current economic climate with a recession and NHL franchises currently in trouble makes that option unfeasible.

Definitely sounded like a fun game for the home fans last night. A bus trip and 3pm road game as the end to a 3 in 3 isn’t a recipe for a good game today, but hopefully they still find a way to win. Brdigeport is also playing 3 in 3, but the schedule was more favorable to getting a little rest. Friday away at Albany, Saturday home, Sunday home. Hershey played Friday at Syracuse, Saturday at home.
Holtby played well on Friday and didn’t face too many shots, then backed up last night so he should be fresh.

Kuznetsov – (thanks to poster Langway posting this on other boards) I liked reading Murray’s comments, but there’s so much wrong with the rest of this piece in terms of how the contract process works, ugh.
So Kutznetsov could come over after the new year/juniors tournament?
Interesting…..if so I could see him being interested in that as long as the Capitals kept him up in the NHL. That way he could burn off one year of his entry level deal this year instead of next and be on his way to his big contracts….interesting.
I assume he can’t come over after the WJC and if the article says so that’s probably one of the inaccuracies sk8 referred to.
Please, call me F&B.
Yup, he has played in the KHL since the NHL season started. The NHL CBA states that a player has to clear waivers if they played overseas after the NHL regular season starts…no exception for ELC players exists as far as my understanding. There’s also the issue that he has a KHL contract and the NHL and KHL do have an understanding/agreement about players with contracts.
If anyone is curious about the AHL waiver rule for players playing in Europe (used for Orlov and others in the past, like Joensuu), as Leone reported last year at the time Orlov came over:
From Leone on 2/22/11: “Bears president-GM Doug Yingst said the 6-foot, 197-pounder meets exemption criteria for AHL Bylaw 26, which requires players who begin a season in Europe to return by mid-December to be eligible to play in the AHL, because he is a draft pick who is on Washington’s reserve list.”

Boy that piece was packed with relevant tidbits. Discounts are great, but I wonder what else the microchip data is used for????
First and foremost, they can track you all over the arena. Probably in the parking lots, too. Scary.

– In the middle of talking about the systems of the Western Conference teams he’ll face and the personnel he’ll need to become more acquainted with, Boudreau managed to take a poke at some of the Flyers.
"I knew exactly what Philly was going to do," he said. "I knew the guys that were going to dive and they did. They got away with it. The only one that didn’t get away with it was [Wayne] Simmonds. It looked like he got shot. And he went down until he start peeking and no one was calling it and then he had to get back up.
"[Scott] Hartnell looked like he’d gotten shot by a bazooka. He didn’t miss a shift and then he comes in and scores the tying goal."

I still love the guy. I hope he never loses the Flyers and Penguin hate.

No matter what, BB is someone who is incredibly comfortable with who he is. I’m going to miss his malapropisms and self-deferential sense of humor. As well as his blunt honesty. I laughed at his answer to a reporter asking him how he would feel if his Ducks and the Caps met in the SC finals: that it would be a narrative the media would love. And that he would be happy that he was finally in the finals.

So late in the game last night (was out watching it) I noticed with about 5 minutes left Ovie actually doing the Chimera dump and chase trying to make it a pass to himself, I swear the D man for a full 3-5 seconds didn’t make a move towards the puck and was just shielding Ovechkin from getting past him. Perhaps it wasn’t quite that long, but it sure looked like a clear case of interference to me. Either way I hope to see more of that from the Captain, because if you’re a D man the last thing you want to see is Ovechkin chipping and chasing it by you leaving you the option to either let him get there first or skate hard to get there first and maybe get crushed.

What’s amazing is that they all learned that play as a mite. The faster kids in mite hockey use that to their advantage again and again and again.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Well I’m not sure the Russians learn that as mites.

no way. he started playing much younger than that.

sounds right. Still “older” to start hockey. I believe Green is also a late starter.

I seem to remember that he started skating earlier but that it wasn’t until 8 or 9 that he was on a serious team, and the importance of his brother who at first was the one who took him to practices and many of the games since both of his parents worked. And that remembrance is part of what goes into his kiss to the heaven after every goal. I wish I could remember where I read his early bio but it was years ago. I do remember that I trusted the source(s).
I vaguely recall that Greenie’s dad once said (sometime around one of those father trips) that he had a relatively late start, but whether that mean 6 instead of 3 I didn’t know. Those Canadians seem to live on ice.

Green himself said he didn’t start playing hockey on an organized team until he was 11. The interview he gave to the Calgary radio station during his golf tournament this summer tells the story. That’s one reason why his charities are devoted to giving kids the chance to play, because it literally changed his life.
Good stuff. Thanks for the link. That is late to start.

I want to see more of it that’s for sure. No D man wants to deal with that multiple times a game.

NYT is doing a video series on Derek Boogaard and enforcers. First part just went up, and it’s really good.

Thanks a ton, this will really help me out for my final position paper in english this semester. I’m writing about whether or not fighting should be legal. Hard to write against fighting since i feel that its a part of the game but we all know the health complications and its nearly impossible to write against player safety.
Here’s my take on that topic. Anyone remember any other Japers fanposts or articles taking a position on whether fighting should be eliminated?

Oh, and there’s got to be some limit on safety. You can’t create a contact sport involving 200 pound men with knives on their feet that is “safe.” The question has to be where the balance lies.
Sports involves adults making a conscious choice to take physical and safety risks. I think it’s totally reasonable to say that people should be allowed to make fistfighting one of those risks. For one thing, I don’t think it’s the most dangerous thing they do.

That was my take after reading the NYT piece. Heartbreaking that his life ended at 28? Of course. But the guy lived his dream, and no one was holding a gun to his head saying “You have to fight”. He knew his way into the NHL was through his fists, and he accepted that. I think Hendricks and/or Bradley have made reference to that reality as well. Granted they both have a bit more skill than Boogey did, but they’re fully aware that part of the reason they’re getting paid to play hockey is their willingness to throw down.

I posted this before and thought it was relevant to post again now that we are in December and closer to the relevant dates .
Green’s injury/games missed clock re-set when he played in the 11/11 game. IF he was placed on LTIR, 10 games and 24 days means 12/7 would be the first game he’d be eligible to return. As of now, he’s not on LTIR based on any info. provided, but I think it’s relevant since it relates to if there’s any reason to make a roster move requiring cap space. He has missed 11 games already, but there’s also the 24 day component.
Upcoming games:
12/5/11 Capitals at Panthers
12/7/11 Capitals at Senators
12/9/11 Maple Leafs at Capitals
If we get to 12/7 and Green is still not back, he can be placed on LTIR retroactively, right?

He can be placed on LTIR retroactively at any time, yes. Just noting if it happens now, the only issue would be confirming the cap space and roster spot for him, there would be no additional missed time issue other than the next game.
I hope this new system is a bit more exciting than it has been these past three games. I understand that it will take a while for them to adjust and that it should be better suited for the playoffs, but man were the past three games boring (even if they won last night).
The style of hockey that wins playoff games is boring, I think. But it works.

It wasn’t flashy but I like physical, cycling hockey. As long as you aren’t turning the neutral zone into mud and killing any speed I still think it can be enjoyable to watch. It wasn’t even a dump and chase battle the whole game.
Please, call me F&B.
Ovie’s had more highlight-worthy checks in the last three games than possibly the last two years. He “Ka-bonged” the hell outta Colin Greening last night. sweet
Blew him up REAL good.

And while we all know we pay him to score goals, you can see how the physical side of his game contributes to his overall engagement… there were some of those familiar moments of electricity with him last night
I’d have called the second period “exciting,” with plenty of 2-on-2s and 3-on-3s going back and forth, but it’s also been awhile since I’ve seen Chicago play.

Class Picture of Orlov
I found this on a tumbler. It’s a class picture from one of Dmitry Orlov’s classes when he was younger: Dmitry is at the beginning of the 2nd row from the top.
