Gee, nothing like having 2 of the Top 3 in the Underachieving Department (THN). According to Neil’s article in the WaPo, both of them have low PDO (Ovi with 966 and Semin with 968) so the expectation is that they should turn it around to some degree. Backstrom’s PDO is low as well so there’s the expectation that Nicky’s productivity should improve

As for Vokoun…I say, move his family up here stat. He’s living out of a suitcase, away from his wife and kids. That has to add to whatever mental stress he is under. Just a thought.

To play devil’s advocate, if you’re only going to be here for six months, why uproot your whole family to do that? I assume his kids are in school, which is a big deal.

Didn’t it help Ilya last year in NJ? School transfer time is coming up. Kids adjust easy.

yes, his daughters are school-aged and I recall Vokoun saying that they decided it would be best for the family if his wife and girls stayed in Florida, because the assumption is he won’t be in Washington next season. They didn’t want to move them this year, only to have to move to yet another city next summer. 3 schools in 3 years is rough.

I have no sympathy for Vokoun. Having been deployed and seeing other military families deal with separation, I’m not giving a pass to Vokoun in that regard. If they can deal with that stress, so can he. He is a millionaire staying fancy hotels and taking chartered flights. And the shots he is facing don’t even compare.
He took a smaller contract to be a number one goalie for a team that he thought would be a playoff contender. He was hoping that playoff success would lead to one last big payday. But first the team has to get to the playoffs and based in large part to his play – the Caps are currently out of the playoff picture. And at this rate, he is playing his way out of the NHL.

Pretty callous view. Different things impact different people differently, and you can only know your own reality. Maybe if Vokoun had a military background, that perspective would make something like this “deployment” easier on him. But he can only live the life he lives and deal with the things with which he’s had to deal.

Okay, I don’t have any sympathy for the “problems” of any of the millionaires who play a game for a living. If that makes me callous then so be it.
He’s a professional athlete, he already spent half the season on the road. Considering that this a one year contract, what’s a few more months.

Maybe not, but having money gives you access to resources and tools that others don’t. Starting to get OT.
My point is that Vokoun is not making excuses for his play so why should we? He’s a professional and he signed this contract with a goal in mind that was linked to how he played this season. At present, his play has not put him in the position to achieve that goal.
I’d rather talk about the mechanics of his movement, the speed of his reflexes, or his positioning – compare it to previous years – and see if his skills are failing him or he’s just having a lot of bad luck.

Vokoun said he planned on reviewing tapes from the first two weeks of the season to see if there are areas of his game that need tweaking. He said he will not lobby to return to the net, saying it might be best for him to sit back and dissect the mistakes that are leading to soft goals.
"Sometimes the best thing is to get a break and work in practice," he said. "There are plenty of games left. I want to feel good and help this team win. That’s the most important thing.
Vokoun acknowledged that being away from his wife and two daughters for the first time in his career has taken a toll on him personally, saying it’s easier to take his mind off the game when he goes home to his family than when he returns to an apartment by himself.
"That’s my problem," he said. "I’m paid to do a job and I’m a professional."
The separation may be affecting him, but he’s not using it as an excuse either.

Maybe if he stayed in the net to start with he wouldn’t be having these problems. That guy gives me a heart attack at least a couple of times a game with how far out of position he takes himself (and with how slow he is to slide back into position).

Being like Tim Thomas is a bad thing? Here are his last 5 years in stats
Year Team GP SV% SO
2007-08 BOS 57 .921 3
2008-09 BOS 54 .933 5
2009-10 BOS 43 .915 5
2010-11 BOS 57 .938 9
2011-12 BOS 21 .940 3
The problem is Vokoun isn’t stopping shots he should. I don’t really care how he gets his SV% up as long as it gets there. Floppy Timmy somehow stops shots, and it seems to work.

I think you grossly understate his ability.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m slowly turning on Tim Thomas. I think he’s a good goalie with great fundamentals. I don’t think he’s elite without Boston’s defensive scheme and players. He can make the outstanding save, but I don’t think he’s the dominant goalie of years past (When we had Roy, Hasek, etc). He may be the best goalie right now, but I think the real quality of goaltenders has gone down in recent years.

Then you don’t think he’s elite. And I disagree with that.
To be sure, he is in a favorable system and surrounded by talent that fits the system (novel concept).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That’s fair. I think he’s a very good goaltender. I also think a goaltender like Ty Conklin or Chris Osgood could fill his role, and the Bruins would still be in decent shape (But not the shape they’re in now).

His fundamentals are awful. He gets by on athleticism. And douchebaggery. If that guy has anymore success in the NHL it’ll be too soon. Fuck that guy in the ear.

I normally feel the points here are worthy of consideration and have a lot more merit than other venues but the debate on Thomas is about as big a pile of steaming $&*% as I’ve had the displeasure to read. You don’t win two Vezinas, be in lead consideration for a third and win a Stanley Cup without being an elite goaltender. As a Caps fan in the New England region I see A LOT of Thomas and if you think his stats are because of a favorable system then you’re simply reporting opinion based on the desire to tear down a team and player that put together a team the right way and won – something we’ve been tortured with for too long due to the Caps failure to do the same. And if you just want recent visual evidence – watch the highlights of last night’s Ottawa game and then tell me the system and routine saves were to credit.
Pure bull&%$!
Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him...
When did I say he didn’t have the ability to steal a game? He totally does, but most goalies in the NHL do. I think he’s a pretty good goalie. I don’t think he’s as elite as he seems to be made out.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I’m not trying to just pick on you – sort of by default through the string. If you look at the last four years Boston (beginning with this year thus far) is 25th, 29th, 14th and 24th in shots allowed per game. That means his Vezina years they were 29th and 24th and the year he played injured they tightened it up and finished 14th. Their “system” works because they have two great goaltenders, one who I would assert is elite. Do you ever think that perhaps Boston’s great defensive system is also myth or not as great as it’s made out to be? It reminds me of the garbage regarding Tampa’s 1-3-1; even last year when it was so vaunted as fresh and stifling (both nonsense) they finished 22nd in the league in GAA.
Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him...
Yeah, they gave up a lot of shots, but I’ve watched a few games and while they give up many shots, I think they do a good job of where they give up the shots from. I don’t think it’s necessarily a myth on the Bruins defense, but that’s a fair argument. It’s hard to evaluate goalies now, though, because ideally goalies should play the same regardless of what team they’re on, and we’re seeing first hand with Vokoun that’s not really true.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Truce. I do believe some of my passion derives from watching his passion (derided by some) while the Caps, goalie on out, are mired in a passivity I find difficult to understand.
Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him...
Even great defense doesn’t give you an average of .920+ over the past 5 years without a buttload of skill. But Thomas not letting in floaters like Vokoun has been would be a significant difference.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
I’m starting to wonder if Vokoun was always just an average goalie in a terrible system, a trait which I feel can artificially boost the SV% numbers. Clemmensen was able to step in and look godly in that system too. And Nashville has just rolled out goalie after goalie who looks stellar just because they wear Blue/Silver/Gold.
I don’t know what it is, but I’m quickly becoming terrified of Vokoun.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
by Whiter Mage on Dec 15, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions
I do think a passive D team which allows a lot of shots but from the outside boosts a goalies stats. But lets say Vokoun had that, and knock a few percentage points off his SV% under that system. He should still be .915% And he’s not been bad internationally, so he’s still a damn good goalie.
I have not been impressed with Vokouns play as of late, but I do not expect this to continue forever.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
I think Boston’s system definitely helps boost SV%. Maybe Rask and Thomas are both so great that the two of them have led the NHL in SV% for three straight years, but I think the system has to play a role. I believe Julien himself has even said that he coaches the D to let the other team shoot as much as they want from the outside and just focus on cutting down scoring chances.

When Tim Thomas is flopping around outside of the goal (from what I’ve seen) he is usually out on top of the crease and (well) beyond. He also gets back to the crease with some speed.
Vokoun has been getting stuck on the side of the goal (and beyond) and unable to get back. Even when he is out front (and can cut the angle), the puck is usually not where angle cutting can help. It is behind him and to the side, and all the bodies down near the crease stop him from getting back in to position.
Simply said, Thomas is frequently way out of position, but he is athletic and makes it work. Vokoun is frequently out of position in a way that makes it harder to recover, and he is not as athletic, and it does not work.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
also, it seems that when TV is out of position, he is also off his skates which makes it really hard to get back. He’s mostly just sliding and scrambling.

- They are paid well for what they do.
- Moving from one city to another comes with the job of a professional athlete.
- Aside from trades, they can choose where they live/work (Richards was a free agent when he signed with NY, he could have gone anywhere he wanted and played for what they offered)
- It can have an effect on performance, but it is not an excuse.

This is all speculation about a hypothetical problem anyways. Who the hell knows what’s going on in Vokoun’s head right now? We just know that he’s performing below his capabilities and are taking stabs in the dark.
Which is why I would rather look at his play this season vs. prior ones to see if there are fundamental differences in how he is playing than to talk about whatever effect being away from his family is having.

I think this portrayal of Vokoun as the consummate professional (sorry if that’s putting words in your mouth) is a bit off, given his increasingly frequent glares and dressing down of teammates after goals, his “hard to win when you only score one goal” comment, and perhaps other things.
No doubt, though, that he owns his softies.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Is it not hard to win, when you only score one goal? I think that’s just calling it as it is.
Unless he is saying something inappropriate in those situations, I wouldn’t label him getting on his teammates as unprofessional behavior. His teammates have a big role in protecting the net too. The best way to keep pucks out of the net is to keep them from ever reaching the goalie.
If the Caps were winning, we’d probably be talking about his competitive nature and how he won’t settle for less than 100% effort.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s not a secret inside the Caps’ locker room or outside it that the offense is struggling and they need to score more goals to win games.
I don’t know what TV is saying so I can’t come down to hard on him. If he’s hurling insults at guys – then that’s bad form and shouldn’t continue.
If he’s communicating anything constructive, then I’d be willing to give it a pass even if the delivery is harsh, and chalk the tone up to being a product of emotion.

Yes he is being treated well comparatively, and yes some people do have it worse. But some having it worse doesn’t mean the current situation isn’t bad, especially for someone who is not used to the separation. Goalies are notorious headcases, so much so that I’m surprised Green wasn’t ever a goalie. I doubt he’s really playing his way out of the NHL; even if he keeps up this mediocre at best pace, he’ll still get a one year contract from some team because of his history.
Both of our goalies need to start playing better, but I have faith they will. I doubt they both simply lost their talent Steve Mason style.

It was great. Bryz was awesome which everyone else is gushing over. Hartnell calling Cooke the dirtiest player in the NHL was the highlight from me. And it strengthened my hatred for SA16, so I would say yea, as great as it can be without the Caps in it.

That was laugh out loud funny. I’ll add that I think I’m going to love Torts by the end of this series.
Yea, I definitely like Torts, and not based on any facts I feel like DH’s coaching style is similar to Lavy, or at least it should be.
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
On that note, one of the unfortunate effects of Hunter’s lack of interaction with the media is that we don’t really know what he’s like as a coach. The farm boy on a tractor image is cute and all, but my inner fan is dying to know what it’s really like in that room.
Maybe they show a glimpse next week on 24/7? Hoping anyway

Saw it live. I thought it might have been waved off because I couldn’t believe he’d be able to keep the puck moving forward with all those dekes.
I don’t think he did, did they review it? It seems like they don’t really enforce that rule. I believe there was an instance not long ago where someone actually put the stick in-front of the puck and pulled it back before scoring and they allowed it.
Briere scored a shootout goal like that earlier this season. Can’t remember who it was against, but the other team ended up winning anyway so there was no huge outrage that the refs let it stand.
by Murshawursha on Dec 15, 2011 10:12 AM EST up reply actions
It was against the Devils. Kane didn’t stop (which would have made it illegal), but no way can you convince me that was the case on Breire’s shot. (here)

To quote our Captain: It was sick.
After Briere got away with stopping against the Devils last month, I figured more players would try that. But Kane didn’t stop, he just slowed down to basically a crawl and waited out Backstrom. It really was fantastic.

Unless it was a penalty shot, it was so slow that every player on the ice would have gotten down there in time to stop it.

Can’t spell “DiPietro” without “IR.”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
is he not on IR, or has it just not been announced? terrible cap management if he’s not been placed on there at least retroactively.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
- IR has nothing to do with cap management only to do with roster management
- No he is not on IR; he is still on the active 23 player roster at this time
sorry, I was thinking LTIR and the space that creates.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
At this point and time, they don’t need the roster spot or the cap hit for another player, with Poti on LTIR, Beagle on IR, King in the AHL, etc.
I guess I’m just confused as to why they’re not banking cap space by placing Beagle and Green on LTIR.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
Because Poti has them over the cap already – no banking once that’s the case.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
(And once you use LTIR to go over the cap, you’re not banking anything, so even without Poti, if they used LTIR to exceed the cap, it’d put an end to their banking space under the cap… because they’d be over it.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Don’t bank cap space when using LTIR space; just enables them to add players/use the cap space while the player is on LTIR. Already using Poti on LTIR to have space for some other players.
If they had needed the cap space to call up Orlov, I assume Green would be on LTIR.
I’m sure his fantasy owners are cursing the Caps though, he’s a dead-weight roster spot at this point.

Concussion discussion continuation -
Was watching the Wild Blackhawks game last night and Latendresse left, being reported as issues related to his recent concussion, not good.
Glad the WIld held Bouchard out of the game, although it sounds like he couldn’t have played due to his injuries (non-concussion for now) anyway.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned this Boudreau post-game quote from last night: Same words, one implies he said something else in between, but anyway, here’s the quote:
Boudreau:
This was the hardest I’ve seen a team work this year that I’ve been coaching, and that includes the Capitals.source: curtiszupke Curtis Zupke
and this version from twitter – icemancometh Eric Stephens
Boudreau: “I thought this was the hardest I’ve seen a team work this year that I’ve been coaching … and that includes the Capitals too.”
was that tweet-only? Or is it included in an article for better context? I can’t figure out if he means the caps don’t work hard, or the Caps work hard, but the Ducks just took working hard to another level. or it’s Bruce and I shouldn’t read too much into it because he opens his mouth without thinking.

Not exactly in the rulebook lol….They fought on the ice, and while they were being separated after, he threw the other guy’s glove…into the stands, went to the locker room and changed after he got kicked out, then walked into the…stands and dropped his pants right there and just went for it.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

Neuvy gets the start tonight, per Vogs and KC.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not a surprise given TV’s recent comments about having to step back and re-examine his game and what’s been going wrong this year.

Yeah, I called it in the recap Tuesday night – Neuvy deserves this one.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The questions need to be asked/answered in a cascading type of way:
If Neuvy plays well, does he start COL? I say yes
If Neuvy plays poorly, does he start in COL? I say no
Is Neuvy slotted for several consecutive games while TV gets his mind right, provided Neuvy doesn’t totally screw the pooch? I think yes
Is TV getting a big or little timeout? I think fairly big, should Neuvy play lights out in WPG and COL.
If they both are playing unsustainably bad, each game presents an opportunity to begin to staunch the bleeding – but who provides the tourniquet?
My answers:
Yes – win and you’re in right now. Play well and lose and it might be enough.
No
I don’t think so – no one’s going to get two-in-a-row if the first start isn’t a good one
I think little
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think the length of TV’s timeout will be on him. He needs to find what’s wrong with his game, work with Dave Prior (and Olie if he’s around) to fix it, and then prove to DH that he’s got it figured out.
Neuvy’s play will factor in too, but if TV can right the ship I think he’ll be back in goal sooner rather than later.

Garrett Mitchell getting a promotion to the top line (short-term perhaps) per Leone; Bears play tomorrow at Norfolk and Saturday and Sunday at home.
I didn’t get to see all of 24/7, but impressed by Callahan’s grandmother and entertained that she is being talked about today on twitter and message boards as much as Avery, JJ, etc.
I’m surprised I haven’t seen more about Simmonds’ comment about Philly vs LA, but can’t say that I have looked at any message boards which are LA specific.
Callahan’s family was pretty much all gold. I tweeted it last night (and in retrospect kudos to the HBO team for not doing it) that if the cameras stayed on his Dad another half beat it would have been golden, but then the grandmother gave them an even better moment.

Loved that whole thing w/ Callahan’s family, what a great moment.
I will say that, as much as I enjoyed 24/7 – because they really do such an amazing job with this whole thing – I didn’t have the same overwhelming “holy SHIT that was amazing” reaction I had after the first episode last year.
Not sure if it was just because it wasn’t about the Caps (although I was riveted during the segments on the Pens, too, so it can’t just be that) or because last year it was so novel. Or maybe it was because the first episode last year had such a simple, defined storyline – one team going up, one team going down – while this year was a bit more abstract, looking at the toll the sport takes on those who play it.
I don’t know. Still enjoyed it immensely, and the filming was amazing and I thought the sections on Giroux’s injury were handled incredibly well – just felt like while there were amazing moments (seriously, Bryz?) there were more of them, and more specific moments revealing the personality/character of different players, in the first episode of the Caps/Pens one.
…try and stop me from tuning in for episode 2, though :)
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
In terms of storytelling structure the AV Club raises decent ideas in terms of differences between last year and this from storytelling perspective, but I think the combination of a) Not knowing what we’d even see last year and b) The fact that our team was in it might be part of your amazement. v2.0 has the buy-in of last year’s crowd so they don’t have to do the same things, so they can flesh out a bit more of the subtleties and do different things, and the actual way they’re shooting is obviously going to improve because of acclimation.
The way I’ve been looking at it is from a non-sports, television show perspective, where the main character is so strong in the first year that now the creative people have their legs and everyone likes him/her/them, they can probe around and find different aspects that others might not have spotted before (and should), without losing what makes the character so appealing.
Christ I think I just sounded like a film prof.

…you did. But it was a good description/explanation, thanks :) And it’s definitely all relative, because I really did think it was incredibly well done over all.
I think last year I was just so giddy at seeing our boys up there on HBO that they could have showed them sitting around staring at their toes for an hour and I would have been riveted – this year I have a better understanding of what’s going on, and without the emotional attachment it might take me a bit longer to get into the personal side of it.
Plus it’s fighting much more ingrained hatred this time around… with just one evil team last year, and maybe a handful of guys on that team that I really just wanted to punch, I was pretty much all-in from the start. Between the Flyers and the Rangers there are just so many players I despise (although definitely some I like, and some I could see liking by the end) it’s a little tougher.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
Loved both descriptions. Will definitely download it when it’s available.

Agreed. Callahan and his family seem like all class. It’s nice to see that in professional athletes these days. In fact, I really liked the majority of the Rags – excluding a Mr. Sean Avery.

Did Schultz make the trip? If so, any chance he will crack the line-up tonight? I would like to see if his work with Johnson is paying off. Perhaps if he got a few games under his belt with a regular partner – like Dale is doing with the o-lines – we might be able to see if there has been some progress. If so, I would like him to get some regular ice time in the rotation, at least equal to that of 44 and 4.
Yes, Schultz is on the trip. no, he is not playing tonight.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Hey.
OT Hockey last night included a discussion of the ’96 Team USA World Cup Championship team and a link to youtube video of the goals from the gold medal game. Nothing wrong with that!
I love that game with all my heart. I was in college back then, and we didn’t get the game on TV, but a buddy’s dad from north of Buffalo taped it (VCR, natch) and sent it to us. We got it three days later – hadn’t a clue what was going to happen – and watched.
It was a more innocent time then. I wonder how long I could avoid a score from a game like that today. My guess is zero seconds.

Fun. Now where is that tape?
There’s always the ’80 gold medal game on tape delay ….times they have changed
they were still tape-delaying the Olympics in 2004. Insane.
and to remain on topic: I actually taped game 1 of the Caps-Rangers playoff series this past spring. Yes, tape. The VCR finally bit the dust a few weeks later.

what’s crazy? Tape-delaying the Olympics, or me still using a VCR in 2011? :)

tape delaying live sporting events
(I still have a DVD VCR combo, which is used from time to time, knock on wood)
I’ve noticed that FOX likes to show tape-delayed EPL games on Sunday sometimes. I’m looking to increase my knowledge and fandom of English soccer, but there’s just no suspense for me when I know that if I surf the web a bit to find out more about a player or team I’ll inevitably be spoiled with the result.
I’ll note here that they plan to show live games on the morning of the NFC Championship (Arsenal-ManU) and Super Bowl (Chelsea-ManU), respectively, before showing myself to the OT thread.

I think us OT Hockey folks are amendable to hiding the OT Hockey posts a day or two after their posted, if that helps. I know how quickly stuff can slip off the front page (coughCharityPick-upGamecough) with daily Hockey OT posts. And I say as one of the people who is in Hockey OT almost every night and love it.

He started the season with Lethbridge and yes, we had some fun when he was traded to Brandon. Not quite as aptly named as this former Brandon Wheat Kings player.

After seeing concussion Drs., PHI’s Chris Pronger won’t be playing anytime soon and I won’t be surprised he doesn’t play rest of season.

man. Not a guy I like and he’s certainly caused his share of serious injury, but damn, that’s a scary serious brain injury.
and because it must be asked: if this, hypothetically, ends his career, Philly’s off the hook on the cap hit, right?
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
Does a career ending injury count the same as a retirement? If it does, then they’re on the hook.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Yup. They’d have to LTIR him through the end of the contract. Which they’ve already done with, um, Laperierre?
Then again, a new CBA in 2012 might have something to say about that.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
That’s the key, they are not off the hook, they can put him on LTIR so it’s different, see the discussion of Poti earlier, etc. until or if the rules change and then we don’t know what will happen. The other area it would impact if there aren’t any changes is in the off-season calculation of the cap, where there is a extra room, but the cap hit would count.
thanks for the clarification. I thought perhaps it was a little different if someone suffered a career-ending injury.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
Difference with Poti is that he can retire and there’s no cap hit for the Caps. Which if his career is over, I’d like to see the team figure a way to get him his money for the year remaining and have him retire. Scout or some kind of other consultant, perhaps.
