  • Notes and assorted whatnot from yesterday's practice. [Caps365 video (Boudreau), CI]

  • The Caps will honor Dino Ciccarelli next week, which is truly awesome (to say nothing of the fact that they'll be donning their Winter Classic threads). [Capitals]
  • Semyon Varlamov on injuries, starting next season abroad, and more. [KOL]
  • If AO was guilty of a couple of, um, embellishments the other night, it's probably only in preparation for heading down to Eric Staal's home rink this weekend - "when in Rome" and all that. [FanHouse (Ciskie)]
  • Speaking of which, Green and Ovi could be on different teams in Raleigh. [NHL.com (Kimelman)]

Maybe because it’s early, but that particular “Mascot mocks opposing team’s athlete” pic is kinda funny to me.

I noticed too that Slapshot was wearing a classic red sweater on Monday (he may have before and I didn’t notice), similar to the WC jerseys, but red instead of white. Wondering if that was a precursor to a new 3rd sweater for next season…

Something about the face on the mascot is particularly ridiculous and amusing. Perhaps the angry eyes.

Assuming that Ovi does indeed return to his old form, I think we’re going to hear about the injuries he’s probably been playing through for most of the season. There’s no doubt that step that he appeared to have lost is back and there seems to be a lot more zip on his shot. We know about the wrist but I’m guessing he’s also been playing through a knee issue.

by b.orr4 on Jan 26, 2011 8:46 AM EST reply actions

You think we’ll hear about them before clear out day (hopefully in June)? Unless he misses time, we’re not hearing anything before then.

Agree. After the last game is played, then you find out about injuries.

OT: I also think that after a guy is traded is the time you hear about the bad side of him. Given that nothing has come out about Flash, I’ll assume he was legitimately a decent guy.

I know teams don’t like to disclose injuries until after the season, but there’s a psychological factor to consider. Teams don’t fear the Caps and Ovechkin like they did last year, so they’re willing to take more liberties. If Ovi returns to his past form, I could see Bruce sending a warning shot across the Eastern Conference saying " Yeah, Alex was taking a lot of heat for his performance, but he was playing hurt for most of the season. He’s back now and ready for the stretch run."

by b.orr4 on Jan 26, 2011 9:06 AM EST up reply actions

A nice little reminder the Ovi won’t get the nearly week-long break that our other wounded warriors will enjoy over the All-Star break. Take it easy in the ASG, Alex. No one cares if you score there or not.

I’ve watched pieces of a couple of recent All-Star games they’ve been showing on NHLN this week (dinner-time surfing). No skater’s getting hurt there unless he tries to hot-dog something.

The Vegas odds on the Caps are way surprising.

I was wondering which playoff teams I think the Caps would beat in a 7-game series. I can’t come up with one that I feel really confident about, given their current level of play and inability to score.

I’m not sure how to think of the Vegas odds. On the one hand, they’ve got a lot of smart guys trying to figure out who’s good and who’s not. On the other, the odds are just a reflection of the “common wisdom” of the bettors, and a device to make sure the money ends up spread out evenly between the various options. It could be that a lot of people are betting based on last season’s point totals, and not this year’s production level.

Sort of on point, and sort of not: is it just me, or is the Eastern Conference a lot better than last year, and even close to the West? Atlanta’s 8th, has 55 points, Chicago’s 8th with 56. Seems to not be the huge gulf in ability like last year.

I’ve thought that pretty much, except that four of the five worst teams are in the East. So the label probably won’t go away quite yet.

Well, yeah, the worst teams in the West are better than the worst in the East, but the playoff teams are actually tilted slightly in the East’s favor, points-wise.

9-to-14, though, the West is much better. Any of the teams currently looking up (except Edmonton) could conceivably make the playoffs. We might see Atlanta or Montreal fall out in favor of CAR/BUF/FLA, but I think what you see now is pretty much what you’re going to get in the East.

JLikens at Objective NHL ran a couple of posts looking at that (P1 P2). His conclusion? East may have pulled ahead…slightly. I don’t think that’s quite the case (Edmonton is by far the worst team in the league, and that brings the West’s numbers down) but it certainly is closer than in previous years. PHI, PIT, WSH, BOS, TBL, MTL, NYR, and maybe FLA all could probably hold their own in the West and competing for the playoffs (with I guess the first six making it…wow).

If DC could outperform last year by about 20 points, FLA can underperform by that amount too, I think. Only weird stuff I’m seeing right now is a terrible PP (they should really decline all those penalties they draw) and an inordinate amount of Fenwick events turned into shots (at least, I infer because their Fenwick% is pretty solid but their shots% is under 50%, and Sunny Mehta showed that in total shots directed at net will miss pretty much at random, at least at the team level).

I’m pretty much resigned that they won’t make it—they’ll be sellers. But I do doubt that they’ll be 18 points behind a team they actually lead slightly in goal differential (or 6 points behind one they lead by 15 in GD) if we change circumstances. I mean, that’s what luck is.

Oh, no doubt, I just took a little issue with “…maybe FLA all could probably hold their own in the West and competing for the playoffs” if they can’t even do so in the East. Why they are or are not doing so is a different question and may very well just be bad luck.

Gotta say I agree with the diving call on Ovi the other night (although the correct call should be “embellishment” or “unsportsmanlike conduct”). He’s too strong to go ass over teakettle on a minor hold like that. If he had just fell on his ass without the high leg kick, maybe he doesn’t get called for it.

Perhaps the earlier swan dive that wasn’t whistled led to this call being made.

You have obviously never seen me skate. He was being held and was trying to show it. If you were being held like that and trying to move forward, falling backwards would be the expected result. Ovi seems to be too strong a skater to have that happen to him given what appeared to be a fairly weak grab.

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 26, 2011 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

I just didn’t see anything done by the opposing player that could have remotely caused his legs to fly out from under him like that. Either Ovi catastrophically wiped out on his own, or he was engaging in over-the-top embellishment.

well considering the no-call when he got tripped heading into the o-zone in the 2nd, maybe he felt he needed to embellish it a little just to get the call.

I’m actually drafting a fanpost about some of the issues raised in that youth hockey article. It’s not about youth hockey per se, but more about the exposure of the sport to young ’uns in the area. And about how I never knew anyone growing up who followed hockey and no one in my 40 person extended family followed it either.

by discuit on Jan 26, 2011 9:14 AM EST reply actions

The building of Kettler and the deal Ted has with Arlington has gone a long way towards increasing youth hockey in the area. I never played hockey as a kid, and it wasn’t because I didn’t like the sport, it was because my parents didn’t want to drive to Reston at 430 am. I’m pretty sure Kettler is the only ice rink in side the beltway on the VA side.

The only public rinks I know of inside the Beltway are Herbert Wells (in College Park), Fort Dupont, and Kettler. Real estate is just too expensive to build them.

Exactly, and its why youth hockey struggled before.

Aim for the head baby Jesus

by Doncosmic on Jan 26, 2011 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

Struggled?

Not sure “struggled” is the right word. Just because someone wasn’t aware of it or unwilling to go to early AM practices doesn’t mean youth hockey struggled. My son started playing in Howard County in 1987 (the club started in 79), and CBHL games were held all over suburban MD, Baltimore, VA and as far away as Hampton Roads. A couple local clubs won national championships. Lots of teams and players, just not as many as now (naturally).

It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.

by OldPhil on Jan 26, 2011 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

that was mostly in MD, in the majority of NOVA there wasn’t much youth hockey.

Aim for the head baby Jesus

by Doncosmic on Jan 26, 2011 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Define majority of NOVA…remember that until somewhat recently NOVA didn’t extend past Springfield down 95 and Herndon on 66. Growing up we used to play at Fairfax and Mount Vernon and by the time my brother was old enough there were rinks in Reston and Prince William. Granted it’s not nearly the level of Maryland but those that wanted to play in NOVA could definitely play. I’m hesitant to agree with OldPhil (sorry) but he’s right in this case. Lack of exposure does not equal struggled…

by Yoshietree on Jan 26, 2011 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

I still consider NOVA to be mainly Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax, and until recently it was damn hard for kids to play hockey growing up there.

Aim for the head baby Jesus

by Doncosmic on Jan 26, 2011 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

I guess it comes down to definition of recently. Over the last 15 years or so rinks, and youth teams, have popped up all over the local NoVA area. Still not quite on the level as throughout Maryland (as Caps-o-Vens proved to me)…but the argument can be made that it’s on par now with the parts of Maryland that are part of the greater DC metro area.

by Yoshietree on Jan 26, 2011 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

Just wanted to point out youth hockey wasn’t struggling in the pre-historic (i.e., pre Ovi) era.

Back in the ealry 90s there was only one youth hockey club in Northern Virginia, aptly named “Northern Virginia”. I had to drive 40 minutes from Centreville to Mount Vernon just for practice. In the 80s I believe Fairfax was the only rink in NoVa to offer a travel team, but they dropped it in the late 80s. (Jeremy Roenick skated for the Fairfax Flyers for a year before moving on because the level was too poor.)

Things have changed now. I believe every rink (except ironically Fairfax and Mt. Vernon) has multi-tier youth offerings starting with a d-league, a house league and competitive travel teams. Youth hockey has come a long way in this area in 20 years.

It is expensive. One time I looked into some other clubs that cost even more, but it was marginal when compared to the lower cost of baseball, soccer, or basketball. Sometimes I cringe if I think too long about the opportunity costs in time and money. All I can say is that, for us, it has certainly helped keep our teen-aged boys very busy with little down time for trouble. Plus, we get all of that high quality drive time conversation!

by Doncosmic on Jan 26, 2011 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Mt. Vernon really is not far south at all. It’s barely outside the Beltway, an easy on/off 495. What’s actually hard for us to get to from southern Fairfax county is Kettler. No matter how you go, it still takes a good 45 min. to get there. We can travel to both Ft. Dupont and Tucker Rd. in much less time, and thankfully they both are our other home ice rinks. Before the snow attacked, we could get to Prince William in 30 min., too. The club at one time considered buying ice at Kettler, but not only does it cost more, but it can be much more time-consuming for some of us to get there, particularly going through Arlington at rush hour. This year we have a number of kids who came from a Kettler program because their offerings do not include a tier 2 travel program.

by Seminrocks on Jan 26, 2011 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

But anything that far south is hard to get to from arlington mclean etc, for the same reason it is hard for you to get to Kettler. My argument was that before Kettler, the people around here had no options that didn’t involve awful traffic.

That’s true from either direction, you are right. It’s mostly an issue when practices are too close to rush hour. Otherwise, we are so used to traveling near and yonder for games that I don’t even consider going to Laurel that far any more. Now, the 2-hour trips to Hagerstown, Charlottesville, Delaware, and 3+ to Hampton Rds. are a different story.

I agree, games are one thing, but 45 miinutes drive time for a practice is just wrong. and it is why alot of people in arlington and fairfax never considered playing hockey an option growing up

Well, and I can tell you we resisted like crazy. We had neighbors on either side of us whose kids played and we thought they were nuts with the schedule and the cost. When we first signed our guys up, hoping they would not like it, we told them it cost 10x as much as playing baseball! So, we’re the fools now, but crazy fools who love to watch the boys play, and of course the Caps.

You make this area sound like the other side of the world. A number of Capitals, including Knuble and Bradley, live in our neck of the woods (both are in the Old Town/Alexandria City area). Mount Vernon is literally just outside the beltway and Old Town/ Alexandria City. If I use route one to Glebe in nonrush hour I can get to Kettler in 20 to 30 minutes.

But of course if I lived in the McLean/Arlington area Kettler would be my first choice. Having choices and the fact that the various programs are growing so rapidly just speaks to the growth of hockey in the DC area.

So true. When my older 2 were squirts/pee wees, there were some years when there were too many kids for one house team, but not enough for 2. This year there are 4 squirt house teams, which is a big jump for the club. They’d been trying to get girls’ teams going for a number of years, and suddenly we have 3. As with so many youth sports, it takes so many incredible, dedicated volunteers to make this all work.

by Seminrocks on Jan 26, 2011 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

I know what you mean. It was a huge jump for the house Squirts and I know that there were still kids who had to wait. And the coaches and assistants are amazing. They put a lot of emphasis on loving the game and being a good teammate along with enhancing their skills.

There is one just south of Old Town – Mount Vernon Rec Center. The Caps used to practice there amof – we used to skip school and go watch Larry Murphy smile his way through practice.

From the Fairfax Times article on Youth Hockey in Nova:

Each day after 6 p.m. youth hockey controls both rinks for four hours, and during most of the weekend, the ice also is tied up by the league.

6 PM???. When did youth hockey get evening ice hours? 10 years ago, practice times were before school (usually 5:30-6:30 am). The early morning stuff was killer. And don’t they have PlayItAgainSports stores down here? They were a godsend for me up in South Jersey. My kid never got a full year out of his boots before he’d outgrow them.

They have them, but they are hard to find. Youth hockey has good practice times because Kettler was built as a collaboration between the Capitals and Arlington County, and youth hockey was part of the deal. That deal is one of the things that will make me always give Ted the benefit of the doubt.

My 3 boys have been playing for 10 years. Only the first year did we have some 5 am practices on the weekends. All others have been in the evenings, sometimes as early as 5 pm, but mostly starting between 6 and 8 pm. The travel teams practice twice weeknights, then play 2 games or practice on the weekends, generally, in our club. The house teams just have weekend ice. The high school team has ice usually Mon. and Fri. nights, though sometimes the games are late.

Our club usually has a used equipment sale every year. That was how we bought our first sets of gear for the 2 older ones. Typical, about 2 years ago the county decided we couldn’t hold it at the rec center anymore (something about “profits,” as if anyone EVER profits on used hockey gear) and we had to move it, or just stepped off the curb to exchange money.

I’m guessing those 6am starts may be the result of the same thing I saw my last few years of coaching gymnastics: with almost every parent working, there’s no longer mom available to shuttle the kids directly from school to the rink/gym. Practices that used to start at 3:30 or 4 have been pushed back because there’s no one to drive the kids until later.

Someone tell me if I’m off the mark with this one as well: In Virgina, it seems that people leave for work much earlier than in DC or MD, traffice jams at 6:30 am and all that. So, again, no one to drive the kids because everyone is on the road before dawn to get to the office by 7:30 so they can leave at 4 pm.

“Ovechkin plays the game the right way,” the masses say.

Of course, that doesn’t brandish Ovechkin a saint.

Who exactly are these anonymous “masses,” and where have they been the last couple seasons? I seem to remember the words “reckless” and “dirty” being thrown around. There was also talk about him being “cut in half” as an act of retaliation. I also recall some harsh criticism over the way he celebrates his goals. If the prevailing popular opinion was that Ovechkin plays the game the right way, I must not have been aware of it. If anything, I think Ovechkin’s diving penalty serves only to reinforce the perception of those who already think poorly of him. This is not exactly a grand revelation; he’s done it before.

Another update: he got a separated shoulder and is expected to miss a month. As a Tarasenko fan this sucks but I guess this means that Kuznetsov almost can’t miss winning the scoring title for rookies in KHL.

He seems to have had a Ovechkin kind of game yesterday – He had 9 shots on goal.
1 goal and 1 assist 2 PIM +/-0 1 ppg, took 6 draws and won 1. Time on ice 23.16. And he had most ice time among fw.

Orlov’s team lost the game 2-10 and he still manged to end up with only a -1. He had 1 assist. 2 SOG, TOI 20.35, one other d-men had more time on ice.

Hemsky is cheaper than Semin and possibly just as dynamic in the offensive zone. At the very least, he’s more dominant territorially relative to his team (consistently with Ovechkin-esque Corsi Rels). He’s another one of those enigmas that’s superskilled, along with Wolski, Semin, Kovalev, and a couple of others (I don’t think there’s much of a way to tell who’s most skilled).

It sounds to me that Semin’s had multiple health problems since November. Would not be surprised to hear that there’s both a hip problem and a groin problem going on. He missed 3 games in mid Deb for a “lower body injury”. And the current trouble. And then he already had a “nagging” injury that was going on back in late Nov. No coincidence that his production went downhill as a result.

To be honest, I am not really concerned with how many goals a respective Norris Trophy candidate is putting up as long as he provides excellent defense.

Quite the snub. I hope he made plans he couldn’t break or something because now it’s just getting insulting.

Carlson is superior in virtually every statistic, he doesn’t get benched, he’s not hated by half the league and he’s defending against the opponent’s top lines every night.

What a joke.

I agree totally, and I wasn’t basing it solely on his all star festivities selection ( sorry for the confusion). But he does engender a lot of dislike.

It’s not just here though. Fans all over the east hate him, basically everyone that has had to put up with him this season. I don’t like the hype he gets, and I knew he’d get hype like this this year (just imagine if he was actually playing well!), but that doesn’t make it less frustrating. Carlson legitimately deserves a lot of praise for his play this season, and he’s being blatantly overlooked for a guy that’s been healthy scratched and is more known for being called out by Mike Richards than doing anything good on the ice.

I agree Carlson and Alzner deserve a lot more recognition for their play than they have so far for sure. And yeah I hate hearing McGuire especially, verbally fellate Subban every time he’s on the air. I think P.K. has talent and is making alot more rookie errors than JC has this year. That said he engenders a lot more hatred than a lot of guys. I think he will end up getting popped in the face soon enough from another player for some of his antics and maybe learn from it. Whether he learns from his rookie mistakes, I suppose time will tell. I think he has the talent to though.

Talent is absolutely not the question with him. I’m sure he’ll be a solid D for Montreal. I’m not sure he’ll ever get into elite status. I think Carlson will be, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to take all that long.

Re: Elite status. Agree with your assessment that Carlson will reach it before Subban does. I think once the brouhaha dies down on Subban and he learns from his mistakes he could have a long productive career without ever attaining elite status or justifying his initial media hype. Which I am sure the Habs would be thrilled with since all the old dogs on their blueline aren’t getting any younger. Wisnewski’s been a godsend for them so far though.

by Yoshietree on Jan 26, 2011 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Actually I think before the players are selected the first time around, players will tell their teams that they’re not interested in going and that gets passed on to the League.

Since it’s only a few days away they’re looking for guys who don’t already have plans and would be willing to go – I think when it’s closer they just start taking guys from the rookie group to play in the game (like they did with Skinner).

But it’s not out of the realm of possibility that J-Car was asked and just turned them down. I hope that’s the case.

by Karl W on Jan 26, 2011 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Nope, it is. As obnoxious as they were about the injuries last time out, the NHL doesn’t want guys there who don’t want to be there – it’s bad publicity and bad for the game.

For example, Zetterberg had no interest in going this year and told them so…not completely unrelated (read: entirely related) to the injury brouhaha with the Wings’ players 2 years ago. So he wasn’t chosen. People saw it as a “snub” but Zetterberg didn’t want to be picked.
