Song for Today in honor of the Cuts
Come gather ‘round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
The cuts, they keep on a’comin’

And now I know you’re dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don’t you understand
It’s not my problem
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my skates
And just for that one moment
I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my skates
You’d know what a drag it is

@MNWild tweets that it is indeed, both the ACL and MCL. Harding out for the season.
Now that Josh Harding gone in Minnesota, I wonder if this is Theo’s eventual landing spot?
ESPN says a source told them on Saturday that the Wild are looking at unrestricted free-agent netminder Jose Theodore as a possible replacement. They’ve got just over 2 mil in cap space, but I assume Harding’s 1.2 mil will come off the books, right?
LTIR doesn’t count against the cap, if I remember correctly.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Well, technically, no, but that’s the jist of it (exact rule I think is that you can exceed the cap by given amount).
by red army line on Sep 26, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Ah… knew it was something like that. Is it LTIR if they’re out for that long, or is there a different rule?
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
nope, he’ll be put on LTIR. Harding will get paid, but his salary won’t count against the cap. With Harding out, Minny has about $3.5 mil to play with

Right, the key difference is that they can’t “bank” Harding’s LTIR space.

There’s speculation that a position in Philly may be open now too – Leighton was injured Friday night. That would be more of a starting role, which I’m sure Theo would prefer. But he’d have to take quite a pay cut.

how badly was Leighton injured? Leighton makes $1.5 mil; Philly has a little less than $900,000 in free cap space right now (including Leighton on the roster)

If Philly has to go to the UFA list for a goalie, I see them scraping the bottom of the barrel. They already have mediocre (at best) goaltending, so the current UFAs that are available may not be great, but they aren’t that different. As mentioned over on BSH, options like Legace and Dubielewicz will be cheaper and will be decent enough stop gaps.
At this point, with Harding’s injury, I see Minnesota as the only real possibility for Theo.
The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

Well hey ex-Hershey backup Jason Bacashihua is on that waiver list. I am sure Philly can make a claim and get him extra-cheap ;)

we spent quite a bit of time discussing the possibility in the GDT last night (although I don’t blame you one bit for not wanting to try and find it!). I think it would be a good fit because it will take some pressure off Backstrom, Theo’s familiar with an offense-first system, and they’re very passionate about hockey up there but (usually) very respectful in giving the players some personal space.
Plus, we were all in agreement that we wouldn’t feel guilty about rooting for Theo if he rocks a Wild jersey.

Or certainly less guilty about rocking a Wild jersey as opposed to a Flyers jersey.
Rocking the Red since 1975
From a purely selfish standpoint as a Caps fan, if the choice is between Philly or Minny for Theo, I’d much prefer he sign with the Wild.
Or if he signs with the Flyers, he at lesat milks them for all their worth, 4 mill a year maybe? But we all know Philly will never pay real money for a goalie

Reading Katie’s piece, it sounds like there’s nothing left for Eakin to accomplish in Juniors, other than leadership skills (his impending captainship) and lots of playing time. His play last night wasn’t as great as Wednesday, but he’s definitely impressing. So does Bruce let him stay for the 9 games (as a reward, a test, or an incentive) before being sent back to Juniors? If so, I’m guessing Matty P. spends October in Hershey, before getting the call. Definitely a blow to his ego, but he’s the only one of the three kids in that position (maybe Karl can give him some tips on dealing with that).

He can get bigger and stronger. That’s important. And having him play 9 regular season games in DC could play hell with the roster. Not worth it in my opinion. Give him a pat on the back and send him back to Juniors. His chance will come soon enough.

Pretty much perfect statement. You have to figure we’re looking to break in 1-1.5 full time new centers this year in either MP or Mackan. Unless Flash turns into a different player in crunch time, I see the 3rd line center as an apprenticeship to take over the 2nd line next year, with the guy who doesn’t stay up full time of those 2 battling it out with Eakin for possible 3rd line center next season. Another year of being “the man” Juniors with the firm knowledge he has impressed so far and we’re expecting even more out of him next season is the best formula in my mind.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

I agree with this. We have enough roster battles to sort out as is, we don’t need to give the kid a cookie. Give him as much practice with NHL players and some pre-season games and then send him to Swift Current when the season starts. If MP, Mackan, or AGordon are going to be kept off the team it should be for a player that is going to be here all year.

I might possibly be the biggest Eakin fan on this site, but I think you’re exactly right. He probably needs another year before he’s ready for a full season against men. And it helps everyone else to make that determination before the Caps’ regular season starts.

I don’t think we have anything to worry about. even if there was no more benefit to him, there is a benefit to the Caps in sending him back to juniors for another year – it means they don’t have to expose an extra guy to the waiver wire. The numbers game is a mess here, and I just don’t think eakin’s going to win that game this year. I see him in chocolate and white next year and in red the season after.

I like the balance in the TOI for the D last night.
17:16 ES; 1:03 PP; 4:14 SH; 22:33 TOI M. Green
18:22 ES; 1:03 PP; 2:11 SH; 21:36 TOI T. Poti
16:49 ES; 0:00 PP; 3:33 SH; 20:22 TOI J. Schultz
17:32 ES; 0:00 PP; 2:10 SH; 19:42 TOI J. Erskine
12:58 ES; 0:50 PP; 4:17 SH; 18:05 TOI L. Nycholat
12:16 ES; 0:50 PP; 4:57 SH; 18:03 TOI B. Fahey
Obviously, Ovi wasn’t there to play PP point and there wasn’t much PP time overall. But still — this looks pretty good. I especially like the T. Poti SH number. Does anyone know how the pairing of Green and Poti looked on the PP point?

I haven’t seen a photo yet of Nicky, on or off the ice, where he doesn’t look great. I think it has something to do with his long flowing blonde hair. Yes, that’s it exactly.
I recall how back during the 2007-2008 season, Nicky hadn’t cut his hair all season since he couldn’t trust anyone outside of Sweden to do it properly. Or that’s how the story went.
I would joke about how long would his hair get if the Caps would ever get deep in the playoffs. Gee, a playoff braid, Viking style, of course. Fitting for a descendant of Vikings.

Bridget does a terrific job capturing the practice and training camp photos. I’m looking forward to seeing what she does with the regular season games. You rock Bridget!
Lots of Johansson and Ovi pics.
Sounds a lot like me. :)
I agree with both of you, Bridget does a very good job.

Following the good news after the first game, it appears that again, no one was injured last night.
Some teams are already in deep doo-doo with injuries. Streit’s shoulder has been announced as torn rotator cuff and torn labrum; surgery and out six months.

Off the current topic, but...
Does anybody know where Quintin Laing may be playing? He sure played the game hard and I really enjoyed him.
I wish him well – it would be nice if he played in Hershey.
he doesn’t have a contract anywhere right now.
