Could have sworn I saw Chad Dukes at yesterday’s Group A session, but I think it was just someone who resembled him.
If you've read this far...seek help.
But srsly, how many people “look like Chad Dukes?”
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I’m done with Dukes. He had one of the most ignorant Strasburg dialogues I’ve ever heard on his show. I know he tries to do hockey sometimes and he’s better than Wise, but I don’t trust him as a primary radio talk voice on hockey and he’s condescending towards baseball.

At times. LaVar, too.
And I like them in general, but I had to stop listening after a couple of mysogynistic tirades.

Sadly, that’s all sports talk radio. It’s kind of the guys’ bar on the radio vibe.

At this point, other than Tony (who is really only half sports talk), when I have the sports talk on, it’s hard to choose and it’s mostly background noise. I quit Wise after the “it’s only hockey” thing (and other crap — he’d probably do better limited to two hours). I can’t listen to Coach Thompson without Smokin’ Al (Doc Walker is OK, but marginally).
"It's always good to have vikings."
Smokin’ Al is my homeboy. I’d wear that on a shirt if one were available.

Totally with you on Al. The loss of Al was the biggest calamity for 980. I don’t listen to Thompson either. Koken was a hockey guy and he was willing to do research on stuff that he didn’t know. He was also good on keeping the show focused on actually having a productive conversation. If anybody hired Koken again, I would run, run, run back to radio.

As a Hoya, I don’t hate Thompson. I just think he stinks on the radio.
"It's always good to have vikings."
He’s good for what he’s good for. He represents kind of an old school black neighborhood vibe, which is a decent voice for radio. Plus athletes respect him enough to offer him friendly interviews that they wouldn’t do otherwise. The problem is that without Koken they can ramble and neither Coach nor Walker does any research. Coach is retired and Walker is more about Walker, Inc. He’s fine on the Redskins, but not much else. Given my current Redskins media boycott that doesn’t do much for me.

I obviously don’t listen to every minute of every show, but they like what they like, try to keep it entertaining for their key demographics, and do a great job of promoting the team I care most about, so I’m a fan. But to each his own, of course.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I recognize that they try, and if they were as open to the Nats as they are to the Caps I would have more respect for them. Hockey plays into their football plus MMA thing. I’ll be checking around here to see when you’re on and I’d listen to them when you’re on, but I feel one of the radio outlets that wanted to save money (which is the only reason they canned Koken) would be better off having a host who was knowledgable and did his research who could focus on interviews, call-ins, and a rotating stable of people of people who actually know what they’re talking about on specific sports.

I saw Ovie, Carlson, Alnzer, Fehr, Nicky (holding hands with a blond girl) and Nicky’s brother at the skins game last night. I was standing in the crowd where the Redskins players exit the stadium and cross the street to their private parking lot. The caps group came by and stopped in front of the barricade right in front of me. Of course I noticed the guys and people in the crowd heard me say it was Ovie and started calling his name and Nicky’s name. They ignored us of course but Carlson was nearest to me and I called his name and he turned around to look at me. He looked surprised to be noticed but waved at me. Ovie saw that and then came over, leaned against the barricade in front of me and acted like he was a fan and started calling John. He went back to his group when the girl next to me asked for a pic. I’m not sure how much the caps players get noticed in a redskins crowd.
Meh, they should have been home resting up for today’s training camp instead of having fun. This does not bode well for success in the spring.
I bet the Penz captain was home figuring out how to be even better this year and not goofing off at a Steelers’ game. Although if he was there, I’m sure he could have stepped in as the Steelers emergency QB if needed.

I know you’re snarking, but I saw them around 8:30 pm. Not really late to be out. None of them appeared to be drunk like some other skins fans stumbling around after the game. Some of the drunk fans tried to go up to the skins players as they were crossing the street to their parking lot. Kinda fun to watch security deal with them. At least they have way more security out there for the players than last year when they barely had any. The caps players park in the same secure access lot as the skins players so it’s a good place to hang out if you want to see both groups.

I read Katie’s article on defense, but I have a hard time seeing how Erskine and Sloan aren’t already penciled, if not inked into slot 6 and 7.
Any reason to believe that Collins or Fahey or anyone else have a legitimate shot?

Unless Collins or Fahey really do something amazing during the preseason, it’ll be Sloskine for the 6th/7th defensive spot. I imagine though that Collins will get a pretty good look to see if he can supplant one of them. That said, a younger defenseman would have to be better than both Erskine and Sloane to win a job. I’d rather a prospect defenseman play 75 games in Hershey than 50 games for the Caps.
I suspect there may be a move before or at the deadline to add a depth d-man. Of course, right now, the BJ’s are looking at moving Mike Commodore. He’s not a great defenseman, but he is solid defensively, and a step ahead of Erskine or Sloane… doubt anything will happen though.

Even if Fahey and Collins do stand out in camp, it’s hard to envision a scenario in which they beat out Sloan or Erskine b/c the team would have to send 89 or 4 through waivers, and I don’t think they want to do that.

John Erskine
Tyler Sloan
Sean Collins
Lawrence Nycholat

Not sure how he was on Hershey’s PK, but he was outstanding for the Caps (small sample). I’d expect him to have as big a role on the PK as he can handle.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I would bet on Poti leading the team with over 3 minutes but Green, Carlson, Schultz, and Alzner all getting over 2 minutes a game as well (that, by the way, works out to 11 man-minutes, so 5.5 real minutes).

How about October? I would be really surprised if the Caps didn’t either sign someone before the season or claim a d-man off the waiver wire. The D corp lacks NHL experience and is really shallow skill wise on the back 10.
Agreed, but any pick up would probably force them to put Sloan through waivers, which I don’t think they’re ready to do right now.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m not so sure of this. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Sloan hit waivers and head to Hershey, if a player McPhee considers better were waived during the preseason waivers flurry.

Keeping in mind that Collins has to clear re-entry waivers if he is recalled after being sent down.
Also, as has been noted on this blog before and I know Peerless and JP know, Nycholat would have to be signed to an NHL contract in order to play for the Caps. Something that is possible given the current contract count, but something to note in terms of the depth chart/order at this point in time.
As a fan watching practice this weekend, Miskovic appears closer than McNeill to being cleared to play given how Miskovic looks on the ice and the fact McNeill is not at camp while recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.
And yes, I agree about the importance of the depth chart later in the season rather than now. I still believe it’s also possible the depth chart changes between now and opening night.
Keeping in mind that Collins has to clear re-entry waivers if he is recalled after being sent down.
That Caps should be so lucky as to have another team claim him…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
In the context of what they are paying for him to be playing in the AHL, I understand and if he had more than this season remaining on his contract I would be more inclined to agree with you on that point Given the contract ends after this season, if he plays the way he did the season before last, he could serve as a reasonable short-term solution. Now last year… Injuries, confidence, etc., not a good season for Collins.
Fact is if they get to the point of putting Collins on re-entry waivers and he was claimed, the question would be what would they do next assuming they had called up the other d players that were viable options?
There will always be guys of Collins’ calibre (or better) available, and at a lower NHL salary than what Collins gets. I certainly would lose no sleep over losing Sean Collins.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The Caps have an adequate number of players who, if called upon to play 4-6 games at a time at this level, would probably get by on adrenaline and the unfamiliarity other teams would have with them alone (Alzner, Sloan, Helmer, Lepisto, Collins, and Kronwall could be said to have fallen into such a group in 2008-2009). But if a player was asked to step in as a result of a serious injury to any of the top-four, thus pushing the 5-6-7 guys up a notch, things get dicey pretty quickly.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Sep 20, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m discussing mid-season issues not off-season or trade deadline transactions. In my opinion, there aren’t always other options available, but my post was not intended as a Sean Collins fan club post. He had struggled last season in Hershey, in particular in the playoffs, but the prior season he showed in Washington and Hershey that he was a capable fill-in. Enough to award him with the 2 year one-way contract, not in my opinion, but enough that I understand why they chose to keep him in the organization.
I am only discussing the issue of losing Collins on re-entry where the Caps would obviously be in need of a dman and he would be half price; if someone wants him on the way down, go for it, although I’d be very surprised if that happened.
Claiming a player on re-entry is about the issues other teams are having at the time with injuries and cap issues and filling out a roster so I don’t think it’s that unreasonable to think if he was playing well in Hershey up until that point that he could be claimed on re-entry at 50%.
I’m not saying it’s something to put on top of the worry list, but it is an issue given the current depth chart.
As to Sloan and if gets pushed down a slot due to an acquisition that would also be interesting to see whether they stick to the 7 or go with 8 d on the NHL roster. The second year on that deal …he could clear waivers, but clearing re-entry waivers could be a potential issue, maybe/maybe not. I bring this up again in the context of depth and whether they would have an adequate number of dmen that could play for a 4-6 game stretch if that played out and an injury bug hit.
Don’t misunderstand this, I’d be all for that situation playing out as a result of an established NHL dman acquisition happening between now and opening night if Sloan stays at #7 behind Erskine and gets pushed down to #8, if it appears Miskovic and Patrick McNeill will be healthy enough to serve as call-up options. And signing Nycholat to an NHL contract is an option as has been pointed out by you in the past.

We’ve all read about how this could be a make or break season for Ovi and the other young guns (and Bruce for that matter), but Knuble’s got a lot at stake as well. Last year of a two year contract, pushing 40, He needs just over 100 games to reach the 1,000 NHL game milestone so you know he’ll want to extend his play at least one more season. I know that he won the cup with the Red Wings, but he’s always downplaying his role on that team. If he’s a major player in this year’s SCF, he’ll guarantee another season, plus he could have a shot at the the HHOF (I assume he’s a lock for the USHOF).

To expand on that: If you really think Knuble is a worthy candidate for the HHOF. You have to stick someone like Dave Andreychuk in there first. Knuble has scored more than 30 goals in a season just twice and has never scored more than 65 points in a season. Andreychuk scored more than 30 goals eight times and scored more than 65 points eight times. And has a Stanley Cup to his name.

I’m curious to see how King will do here, because he was never given much of a shot in St. Louis. Add in the two freak injuries he had, and it’s hard to see how good he actually is based on his time with the Blues.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
He seems to understand (at least in very early interviews) that he’s expected to not just be some big, scary presence with his hands, but that he needs to actually contribute on the forecheck.
So far, he seems more than capable. He actually isn’t as hulking a skater as I seem to remember him being.

Call me Buzz Killington if you must, but grinders and muckers always look good in training camp and preseason, for a variety of reasons (more to play for, skill players don’t have their hands/timing down, skill players aren’t giving 100% trying to avoid injury, etc.).

Even he “only” scored 18 ES goals last year, received more PP TOI than Chimmer is likely to get this coming year, and, of course, is a better natural scorer.
And yes, it was hard for him to get to 20.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The Caps had seven players with more than 20 goals last year. All of them had at least three power play goals (Fehr’s three put him over the top, to 21).
Chimera averaged 12 seconds of power play time a game, and I’d bet most of that was taking the ice as a power play was expiring. He won’t get the opportunities (ice time, power play time) to hit 20. If he gets 15-18, consider it gravy.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Or he has an otherworldly boost in shooting percentage for no good reason.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
If you multiply the best shooting % he’s had in a season (15.6 in 2002-03, when he had 0 PPGs, incidentally) by last season’s SOG/GP as a Cap (1.7) times 82 games played, you get 22 goals. So it could conceivably happen. But yeah, it’s not going to.

Just because you score goals doesn’t mean you dont have cement hands.
Cement hands refers more to dangling and puck maneuvering. Remember all of those breakouts started because of his incredible skating then anticlimactically ended because he couldnt dangle past the goalie?

For at least the first half of the season wouldnt it make sense to play matty P on the caps and macan in the A so get gets more ice time, PP time, etc.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t want to offend anyone, but I really didn’t like the article at all. Poor presentation, in my opinion. Obviously, the intended audience is people who don’t already know about DGVT, and to them the article must read like “here’s this inscrutable thing and trust me when I say that it means two young players who you’ve barely seen are very good.”
That’s basically the worst approach possible to use with people who aren’t comfortable with statistical evidence. They’re already uncomfortable with it and prone not to trust it, and all he’s giving them is “trust me, this is a good stat.” Why should they trust him? It’s his first posting as the “Caps stats blogger.” He hasn’t built up any rapport, any trust at all. As a first column, this is way, way too ambitious.
He would have been better off tackling something much more mainstream to start. There’s a saying in comedy that one of the best kind of jokes is one that feels like only a few people will get, but in fact most people do. Something like “plus-minus is deeply flawed” or even “don’t expect Jeff Schultz to repeat as #1 next year” would have been ideal. In other words, it would have been better to tell people something they already know in an interesting way in his first column.
But starting with a new stat that nobody’s ever heard of, one that doesn’t really sound all that impressive (the best player in the league was worth a measly 9 goals on defense? Ovechkin alone scored 50!), and then making no effort to explain how the stat works or why we should believe it — well I don’t think it’s a very strong start. The article is well written, but would have been much more appropriate for January after a more gentle start to being a guest columnist.

I agree with you, and I have to admit that I wonder if a large portion was left on the cutting room floor.
As someone who likes statistics and sees a lot of value in them, I worry it will make people more cynical about them because it doesn’t address some of the major concerns with the data, most notably that GVT is not a rate-based statistic.
I agree with your general theme but I give them a lot of credit for trying.
The MSM across all sports (exception baseball in certain publications in a handful of baseball markets (boston, chicago, new york)) have pretended that the league reported stats are the only ones that exist and worth talking about.
This is encouraged by the fact that many of the newer/fancier stats don’t mean much for one specific game but mean a lot when analyzing a player’s whole season (e.g. When Eric Fehr scores a game winning goal, people care about the goal, they dont care that he got his goal in only 11 minutes of ice time, of which, only 3 seconds were on the PP)
"Have you ever played?" "Yes, I was a goalie"
It is a bit unfair to say, “he should’ve further explained this certain statistic to this audience (that you claim) doesn’t like statistics”. On the one hand you say his explanation for the stat is lacking, while on the other hand, you say his audience is uncomfortable and prone not to trust stats. Perhaps for his first post he didn’t want to overdue it with overwhelming statistics and complex figures. Heaven forbid someone that doesn’t understand a relatively simple statistic like GVT doesn’t look it up using the link he has in his article.
That being said, he lays out in his article that “(DGVT) provides us with enough insight into which defensemen are keeping pucks out of their own net”, and even gives a bit of reference with the DGVTs Duncan Keith, Mike Green, and Jeff Schultz.
Although he doesn’t establish that GVT is often not a rate-stat, that would be kinda like Damien Cox writing somewhere in his article that he hates Ovechkin and everything he says should be taken with a grain of salt.
Who's your Padre?
I’m coming at this from a legal perspective, from working with expert witnesses. If you have something complex — let’s say DNA evidence — and you just put an expert on the stand and all she says “I did an analysis and there’s a 98.7% chance that the sample found on the scene matches the suspect,” without anything more, you’re going to lose. Even people who aren’t scientifically inclined need an explanation of why they ought to believe you. You have to explain what the scientist did, and you have to explain it in a way that they will understand. It’s hard, and there’s no getting around that, but the alternative is that you won’t persuade anyone of anything.
My biggest problem with the article isn’t that he didn’t discuss the pros and cons of DGVT. It’s that he didn’t establish what it is at all. For example, he never even said what GVT stands for. Imagine if he’d said “Don Ackerman’s DLFQ stat.” Without following the link, you would have no idea what DLFQ is, what it measures, or what it stands for.
Most people who don’t like stats are smart. They just don’t like stats. You have to give them something, even a thumbnail, of what the number tells you before they’ll believe you.

From Peerless:
Chimera and Fehr then created a 2-on-0 down low on a power play against what coach Bruce Boudreau termed a "young" (except for Tom Poti and John Erskine) Team B defense. Ford stopped Chimera’s bid, but Fehr pounced on the rebound and banged it home.
I’m trying to stay composed, I’m trying to stay fair, but I’m sick of the excuses. Sure, Team B has some young players, as do all the teams. But the shift that F&P took video of and posted in the sidebar, the same shift Peerless is discussing in the block quote, came against Erskine, Poti, Semin and Flash. Sure, it was a PP, but you can’t dismiss what Fehr’s line did by saying it was against a young crew.

I don’t buy this at all. If it’s true, BB should be gone. I think as our D personnel improve so will our team D. My problem wasn’t with the quality of the D. My problem is with the fact that BB always has something to say to detract from what Fehr accomplishes but never seems to see Flash’s weaknesses.

My non-scientific take on the GAA situation:
The team is good 5 – v – 5 because they spend so much time 200 feet from their own net. I account for the 4 – v – 4 numbers by pegging them as an outlier.
4 – v – 5, they don’t get to spend so much time down the other end, and their personnel and systemic shortcomings catch up with them.
Or maybe that makes no sense. I dunno.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
It’s all the PK. The Caps were actually quite a good defensive team 5v5 (5th in the league in goals against 5v5).
4v5 though, the Caps were 26th and trailed only by non-playoff teams.
Fix the PK already.

That was one of the most perplexing stats from last year. Usually skill teams kill it at 4/4 but we were completely the opposite. I don’t know if it’s practice, or what, but I keep thinking of the 4/4 goal CHI scored against us where Steckel seemed to be way out of position and in general the communication was lacking.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
This is a completely watered down explanation for it, but i feel like the Caps Defense often “bends but doesnt break” at 5v5. At 4v5, you cant bend or you get scored on. At 4v4, you have a bit more leway, but not as much as i think the caps d needed last year
Who's your Padre?
Just a few years ago, we’d send out Ovie/Backs/Green plus another D man and we totally dominated 4v4 in the regular season. I don’t know what has brought about such a change in that stat from those first couple years to now save maybe a bit more reckless belief in their offensive skills. They really played puck possession then and were less one and done with our chances 4v4.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Not sure if anyone else saw this, but Phoenix had a scrimmage today that was played entirely 5-on-4 (or 4-on-5, however you want to view it). I believe the two teams will then switch for another scrimmage tomorrow so that the other team plays down a man.
When I read that I couldn’t help but think it would be a good idea for this team to try that…considering how good our PP can be it would be a great test for the PK unit.

And pretty much all 4 guys on the ice were trying to clear the zone before the puck was out. At ES that’s not ok, on the PK it’s completely inexcusable.

Matty P did have a close save too keep the puck in the zone; which, often causes those sorts of plays to happen. But that’s more HS than NHL, unfortunately.
Although i think you were more trying to highlight BB’s inability to fault Flash than the defensive lapse, this sort of think doesnt bother me pre-pre-season. If (when) it happens sometimes in the winter, ill be a bit peeved

Yes and no. Obviously now is the time to get the kinks out and the winter will matter much more. But that’s an elementary lesson that these guys shouldn’t have to learn at this point. I just wonder what it take for Fehr to get an unqualified compliment from BB.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
My take:
Fehr has abundant confidence, but doesn’t always work hard enough. BB’s response is to critique him to make him work even harder for the unqualified compliment.
Flash works hard, but often lacks confidence. BB’s response is to constantly build him up.
Don’t know that BB’s response is correct, but that’s just my guess.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Maybe, I just don’t know why Fehr would be so cocky at this point. Maybe coming out of the W he was. I liked your “conditioning” theory last year but I hope Fehr would have corrected that by now.
I also don’t think your Flash explanation fully explains the extent of the BB mancrush on Flash.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
BB had some sort of talk with Flash on the ice right after the circle stretches ended. I couldn’t tell from BB’s expression if it was about good things or bad things.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
When he spoke to the media today, he mentioned that he had "a good little talk with the team that lost 5-0." Also, when someone asked if he was leaning towards Flash as the second line center, he said "Well, I guess that’s up to Flash." He also talks about MP quite a bit towards the end.

From Vogs:
Boudreau was asked whether Fleischmann had the inside track on the No. 2 center’s gig, and his answer was illuminating.
"I guess that’s up to Flash," declares Boudreau. "He’s been put in a position to have that. Some teams use ‘first line second line, third line, fourth line.’ And other teams use ‘scoring line, secondary scoring line, checking line, energy line.’
"We just so happened that we had three lines last year that could really score and a good energy/shutdown line. If Flash plays in that position or another position, that’s going to instantly make the other line more of a scoring threat than the one he’s on now."
Line Dancing?
Boudreau continued talking about Fleischmann’s line:
"I certainly don’t like the way that those guys in one game were passing it back and forth like it was shinny [in Sunday’s scrimmage], but we’ve had a talk about that."

Honestly, the perception of Boudreau’s mancrush on Fleischmann is a bit overblown. We are talking about a player that he benched twice in the playoffs.
I’m not sure if that’s the case with Fehr or not. (I know that’s been the perception with Semin.)

"That’s a trademark of this team," says the Caps coach. "If you look at our forwards down both wings, [we have guys who are] 6-foot-3, 230 [pounds], 225. We go to the net and we win battles in the corners. People think of us as a high-flying team, and we’ve got some guys with some speed, but our strength is along the boards. And I think that’s where we win some battles."
Can’t really say I agree. We have size, and we have players that can handle themselves along the boards, but I simply do not agree that much of our offense comes from crashing the net. Especially the MON series I don’t think we did that enough.

In the playoffs…I don’t think there is a “too much” when it comes to crashing the net. I agree a lot of guys did a better job of winning battles on the boards last year…unfortunately as the series with the Habs went on longer and longer more rushes seemed to lack the patience of getting it in deep and using strength on the boards to muck it up and let guys crash the net. Far too much frustration at how Halak and their D was shutting us down caused guys to rush shots and think volume of long range one and done shots were better suited to breaking through the wall then quality chances and dirty goals.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

I’m somewhere in-between in this. There are different ways to win board battles. For instance, Nicklas Backstrom might be one of the best players along the boards in the league, not because he goes in a does battle with guys fighting for a puck, but for the fact that when he has the puck along the boards, he is almost impossible to separate from it.
