I find this development a tad personally ironic. In one of Steinberg’s recent post-playoff analogies, he seemed to be somehow defending Crosby’s still living with Lemieux. I didn’t get a response, but as a mother, I e-mailed him to explain why he could not compare Ovi’s parents staying with him to that, and why it was time for him to move out. (And I guess I’m indirectly engaging in Crosby parent-bashing again, which I seem to do regularly.)
Sig temporarily on hiatus.
I sorta understood where Steinberg was coming from, but at the same time, Ovie was a 19 year old kid moving halfway across the world and to an unfamiliar culture. I’d want my parents to come with me, too! And families living together is much more common in parts of Europe and Russia. Crosby living in Lemieux basement for 4 years just seemed a little odd.

I suggested that if Crosby thought he needed “parental supervision”, then his parents could stay with him like Ovi’s do. One year, two even, okay. But five? That’s maybe just lazy, but it’s odd.
Sig temporarily on hiatus.
Didn’t Ovi live with McPhee his first season here? Then he bought a house, his brother moved in, and his parents began coming over for extended visits and much cooking of favorite Russian comfort foods and backyard barbeques Russian style with the team.
Maybe Sid never got around to buying a house until now because it was a lot easier for his parents to pop down from Canada than for Ovi’s to pop over from Russia. Both players do need and have a familial support system.
But it is time for the guy to get his own digs.

I’m also totally anti-smoking. My sons who play hockey cannot understand how anyone can smoke and play that sport. I’m hoping this was in the vein of a “celebratory cigar.” Certainly smoking on a regular basis would affect endurance. Let’s hope not the case!
Al Iafrate reportedly used to smoke in between periods. No clue how anyone could play the sport and willingly decrease their lungs’ capacity to take in oxygen (or whatever smoking does to you).

Smoking fallout
from Lifesports.ru:
Russia head coach Vyacheslav Bykov gave hockey players racing after the evening get-togethers in the restaurant . Especially got those who allowed himself to smoke a cigarette. The next morning, Bykov was very angry, and most players spent the whole day at the hotel.
Bykov not happy. I would not want that man angry at me. He looks like he belongs in a James Bond movie.
He certainly doesn’t belong behind the bench of a hockey team with significant aspirations.

Ignoring how depleted some other squads may be, and whether he’s actually doing a good job or just lucky, if Russia wins the tournament, you don’t hear anything more coming out of Russia for a while, and right now, they’re winning.
Sig temporarily on hiatus.
But Russia isn’t really blowing those teams out of the water, despite the 4-1 win over the Kazakhs. I have not been too impressed with the team as a whole, much like with the Olympic effort. Our guys have scored, but it seems they could have done a bit more. Kovy has just 1 point (a goal) and is even. The play on the larger ice is different.
I’m completely anti-smoking on any level, but you’d think an elite athlete would have a little more respect for the effects of tobacco and nicotine on the body.
If you’re not smoking 5, 10, 20 a day or whatever I think you guys are over-stating the effect on your lungs, especially if you mostly only smoke in the off season, or don’t smoke before games.
I’m an ex-smoker who never smoked more than like a pack or two a month, I always bike to work, and after I quit I never noticed a big change in lung capacity.
I’m not defending smoking by any stretch, just giving my $.02
Risk for cancer, though, is an entirely different, ugly story.

First, glad to hear you are an ex. That all may be, but it’s just a nasty habit altogether. Breath stinks, clothes stink. I was married to someone once (long time ago) who smoked casually (never in our house), and that was bad enough. One of my sons has asthma and we used to have to leave restaurants where there was smoking. I am thankful most are smoke-free these days.
My dad died essentially of lung cancer—smoked since he was a teenager up to the day he went into the hospital for surgery for the cancer. Despite remission of the cancer, his lungs never recovered from the effects of the “cure”—radiation and chemo—and eventually gave out. He didn’t start smoking again, primarily because he could no longer inhale.
I hate smoking. But I have never smoked myself and am not a terribly addiction person (except reading Caps stuff online when I should be working). So I can’t really understand why it is so hard for some to quit, such as my dad. I think it’s best not to start but I try not to judge.

Indeed-how's this
Bad Sasha. Bad bad Sasha. Stop smoking now. You are an athlete for freaking out loud. You need your lungs. And you are setting a bad example for your teammates especially young Varly.

I’m sure at least that part is cultural. I’d bet most former USSR-region athletes smoke from time to time. I mean, here in (country of) Georgia, every single person pretty much smokes. Even women. They’re not addicted, but a cigarette or two every day. Russia probably isn’t that much different. I’d be surprised if they hadn’t tried.
Now, doing it regularly is a different story. Doesn’t seem like any of our lovable and/or enigmatic Russians make it a habit. That’s fine by me.

Looked at the RMNB article, and a couple of thoughts:
One, RMNB says the photos were snapped in Russia prior to the WC. From the signage in the background, I would say that pic was taken in Germany. It’s particularly apparent if you click through to the LifeSports article.
Two, Semin’s give-a-crap level has always been, um, open to some debate. Smoking would further inform that debate, no?
Three, smoking has a bunch of downsieds. It’s also fun and extremely enjoyable. I’ll have a ciggy every now and then myself.
Finally, at the end of the day, who cares?
"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. Smoking would further inform that debate, no?
No.
by CaptainAwesome on May 14, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions
First, the “give-a-crap” is purely based on what people think they know about someone’s effort, which we can’t know; it is suspect for any of us to say we can determine that one way or the other. It’s mind boggling how much negative projection there is on Semin because of him being unfathomable. If there’s a void, which there is, it is filled with crap.
Second, no, it does not inform the debate on his hockey play. You could say the same thing about drinking. I do hate smoking and hope it’s not a habit, but I would not extrapolate a couple of cigarettes in Germany to his attitude toward his profession.
And yes, the smoking happened in Cologne after the Kazakh game.
First, the "give-a-crap" is purely based on what people think they know about someone’s effort, which we can’t know; it is suspect for any of us to say we can determine that one way or the other.
That’s why he said it is open to debate, not that it is a sure thing one way or the other. Semin’s inconsistency is not open to debate, and like or not that kind of inconsistency in a supremely talented player is often associated with a less than optimal drive or work ethic. That may not be the case with Semin, but just as you may not think it’s fair to call him lazy, it is similarly unreasonably to completely ignore any possibility that his determination and commitment is lacking.
While one cigarette really isn’t a big deal, it also isn’t completely irrelevant when a professional athlete who has problems with consistency is engaging in something that is known to be bad for your body. Would you similarly write it off as nothing if Green were the one smoking?
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
by Killer_Carlson on May 14, 2010 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions
The issue is you and others almost always assume the worst about Semin and project negative motivation (or the lack thereof) on him. It’s pretty simple. He’s the dog you like to kick. Not sure who will take his place whenever he leaves. Certainly he’s open to some criticism, but it goes over the top around here and some people take every single opportunity to say something negative about him. I would think there would be something in the middle.
I did not write the smoking off as nothing. I don’t like it all and am disappointed that it’s something he may do more often than I would have ever thought. But, if you are going to call it symptomatic of something so much larger, such as his professional consistency, I think that’s a stretch. Seems there would be quite a few other athletes who may have smoked to look at, as well (several pictures just in these clips). Heck, I’ve read Ovi likes to chew tobacco. That’s pretty gross, addictive, and bad for health. Mouth, neck and throat cancer ain’t pretty. I had chemo with a man who went through that and was missing half of his jaw and neck muscles on one side. What does it say about someone who would take this chance with their health?
I can’t speak for others, but I generally try to avoid the work ethic argument with Semin (and is assuming the worse any different from always giving him a free pass?). The bottom line is that he is inconsistent, and I don’t really give a rat’s ass why he is inconsistent. He could be the hardest worker in the world, but if you still can’t count on him to bring his game night in and night out, especially in the playoffs, then his value to the team drops significantly.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst

Boggles my mind that anyone wouldn’t wear a shield. As Poti mentioned, less than an inch, his career is done and he has to learn to drive with one eye.
Given that two guys in the first round of this playoff series have had Poti’s experience I can’t believe that the players aren’t more willing to put them on their helmets. Its not like they haven’t learned how to play with shields, they all wore full shields growing up.
Beards are the zenith of manliness. First, they are scratchy and unpleasant to womenfolk. Second, they look awesome. Third, if you have something tasty for lunch, you can enjoy the smell all the way until dinnertime. - RMNB

Besides picking a coach again, the Devils have another major decision on their hands, which left wing to shower millions upon. They can’t afford both Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk after next season, not without shortchanging other more-needed positions, and they need to choose now. [Link]
Is that really a choice? How could even consider picking Kovalchuk?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Parise’s restricted, so I’d worry about someone signing him to an offer sheet. He’d be my first priority. Pandolfo’s (2.5) and Langenbrunner’s (2.8) deals come off the books next year. Rolston’s contract is an albatross (still has two years left at 5), as is Marty’s (two years left at 5.2).
I think its much more important for them to sign Martin than it is for them to sign Kovalchuk at this point.

Also, clearly his momma ordered him into the barber shop: “You can’t go to your new job looking like that! And stop slouching!”
And I like that he looks up to Travis Moen, who was so effective against the Caps.
Great Eulogy
I love the way JP takes apart the universally held idea that “Sidney Crosby makes everyone around him better.” My 10 year old asked last night who it was that Crosby made better. Kunitz? Guerin? Gonch? Kennedy? Geno? Who? Given the Ok regular season the Pens had, i think it would tough to make a case for any Penguin this year playing above their normal level because of Crosby.
I’ll agree that Crosby made himself a better scorer this year, but all that seemed to do was mask the inability of others to score and when he got shut down against Montreal….goodnight Pens.
by Direction 87 on May 14, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions
The “he makes everyone better” meme is one of my favorite completely unsubstantiated “facts” about Crosby. I’d love to see just one example of a player blowing away expectations by playing with Crosby. Guerin and Fedotenko were just as productive with the Islanders. Satan was so bad he got demoted to the Islanders. Kunitz hasn’t matched the offensive potential he showed in Anaheim. Dupuis had a slight uptick, but still has never matched his career high in points. So who exactly is Crosby making so much better?
I guess that’s still better than making Chris Clark a 30 goal scorer and getting Zubrus two consecutive career years to set him up with a fat contract.

Anyone buying what Bodreau is selling about the impact of the "Fog Flight?"
From the BB Washington Post Chat:
“Washington, DC: Coach, Mike Green recently suggested that the team’s protracted commute home after game 4 played a role in the team coming out flat at the start of game 5. Do you agree? And in general, what impact do extraordinary travel delays have on a club in a series with little time off between games?
Bruce Boudreau: I think the fog flight had a profound effect on us. The players missed an entire night of sleep and got out of their routine. We missed practice the following day and it showed in the first 10 minutes of Game 5, when Montreal scored both their goals."
Seems like another bullet point of the laminated pocket card of “All the excuses why we lost” Profound Effect? Really?
I just hope the CAPS are holding themselves to a higher standard internally, and that stuff like this is just the public face.
Hell no. I have much more to say on the subject (and promise I will at some point), but suffice it to say, that quote didn’t impress me one bit.

Alright, I’ll expound a bit, since the bee is now in my bonnet. I’ll let the coach more or less dismiss any validity that excuse may have had in his own words:
The Penguins’ travel troubles appeared to give the Capitals’ a greater-than-usual home-ice advantage, but Washington coach Bruce Boudreau begged to differ.
“I think it’s totally opposite. All they had to do was sit on a bus. …
“Other than a few of their players, they’ve played in the American [Hockey] League before. A bus ride has never hurt anybody.”
That, of course, relates to the Pens’ travel issues getting to the Snovechkin game. They arrived at their hotel less than 12 hours before their game that day. Bruce’s Caps? Home ~36 hours before theirs.
All the Caps had to do was sit in airplane seats that are more comfortable than just about any bed I’ve ever slept in. A plane ride has never hurt anybody (well, except Flash last summer). Crap excuse, IMO.

maybe the difference between the situations is that the pens didn’t have their sleep schedule disrupted as much? Some people can’t sleep on planes, so it’s quite possible some of the caps didn’t get any sleep until they got home at 6-7 am. Changing your sleep schedule that dramatically does have an affect. Although I do think it’s not the best excuse for why they lost the series.

well, this team played many back-to-back games where they traveled at night and didn’t get any practice. seems like this is not that far out of routine. and i’m guessing plenty of guys slept on the flight home anyway. and lets face it, how many top guys would have practiced that day had they been on a normal schedule? i know mike green would not have been out there.
i think BB is trying to cover a bit for his players. a better answer would have been, “no. difficult travel is part of the life of an NHL team. i rode busses all night in the minors and still had to play the next day. it’s not an optimal situation but one that should not have affected us one bit.”

I think a lot of it just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see how much sticks. It’s a little of everything. Not so much that the sitting on the plane threw them off, but they were coming home from a shocking loss, they were tense, and I thought there was some report that they got on each others nerves a little while stuck. And I can see where it might have screwed up the off day, as opposed to coming in late and playing the same day. I’m not excusing it, just trying to look at it from all angles. And mostly I agree with
I just hope the CAPS are holding themselves to a higher standard internally, and that stuff like this is just the public face.
Sig temporarily on hiatus.
The flight shouldn’t have cost the Caps the series. But IIRC, they sat on the tarmac for several hours. I don’t know if that would have the same implications on a charter as a commercial flight. But on commercial flights, the ventilation improves and the temperature control is a lot better in the air. I can doze and get a decent night’s rest on an overnight flight, but I’m not able to relax when I’m waiting for a flight to taxi and take off.
He neglected that the fog was actually inside the plane.. a fog of smoke from Semin puffing down marlboros :P

This is why an off-season sucks so much. Instead of watching hockey, we’re reduced to parsing a coach’s dumb comments about travel to get our hockey fix.
I don’t think it’s trivial that the coach is creating a culture in which excuses trump accountability.

I thought the most interesting parts of the chat were 1. the question about Fehr deserving more ice time. I think the implication in such a question is why is Flash getting so much more? But BB ignored that and responded w/ something like “Who should get less? Semin/Knuble?” Really Bruce?
Second, when asked directly about Flash/Green ice time in the chat, BB only responded by only addressing Green’s ice time. Not a mention of Flash.
The whole BB/Flash thing continues to confound the hell out of me.

I think its more indicative, at least to me, of how inflexible he can be in regards to what he thinks is the way to win. He didn’t adjust to MTL’s game plan, and insisted on putting out the same guys every time without recognition as to who was performing and who wasn’t.

And if you’re Pittsburgh, I think you could accuse Bylsma of doing the exact same thing. What makes it worse is that Bylsma and the Penguins had just watched the Canadiens trap the Capitals out of the playoffs and yet they appeared to make few adjustments to their game. Both the Caps and Pens were so supremely overconfident that they just refused to believe the Canadiens could beat them. And based on Crosby’s remarks, I still don’t think Pittsburgh believes Montreal beat them.

That’s a bit harsh. For starters what a coach or any public figure says to the press is usually far different than what he says in private. I strongly doubt than when Boudreau walked into the lockerroom after Game seven, he said “It’s not our fault we lost boys. It was the damn pilot’s fault.” I’m also fairly sure that not one player in their post-season meeting was told that if the flight had got in at midnight they’d be advancing to the second round. There are legit questions that can be raised about Boudreau such as the playing time for Flash or starting Theo, but using a comment about a delayed flight as a sign of a culture of excuses just seems like a reach.

Taken on its own, I’d agree.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s part of a larger pattern though. Sure he rips on the goalies after bad performances but even Fedorov said he thought Bruce was really lenient on the players. I think there’s a real question as to whether or not Bruce is holding the players accountable.
Partly, I do believe it threw them off for one game (body clock out of sync or whatever) since it didn’t seem like they anticipated problems, unlike the Pens after the storm who were at least mentally prepared for travel hassels. However, it isn’t why the team lost the series.

Makes a lot of sense. You have to be that kind of flexible to be a butterfly goaltender.
I think I read somewhere that a some goaltenders were having elective surgery in order to round out the bone in their hip socket. I know JS Giguere had that done, but I’m not sure it was elective.

Its a blurb about the rigors of the butterfly style
PATRICK ROY’S career wins record is about to be erased, but his lasting legacy, the widespread use of butterfly goaltending, remains strong. Nearly all goalies use the limb-splaying style at least on occasion, and the result has been both a steep drop in goals against and a rash of hip injuries. In the estimation of Marc Philippon, an orthopedic surgeon who has operated on dozens of athletes—and who did the arthroscopic procedure on Alex Rodriguez’s torn labrum on Monday—10% to 20% of adults have a structural problem with their femurs, the bones that run from knee to hip. If the femur head, which fits into the cup on the side of the pelvis to make the hip joint, is not cue-ball round, then repetitive motion that jams the misshapen ball into the socket can scrape away the natural padding and tear the labrum, a band of cartilage that rings the hip joint and secures the head of the femur.
Dropping into the butterfly is just such a motion. An NHL goalie who drives down for a save can slam the head of his femur into the socket with the same force that an Olympic weightlifter does when performing a clean and jerk, according to research by McGill University and hockey equipment maker Nike Bauer. Multiply that by 500 repetitions a day and you start to pity the cartilage.
Roy himself had hip troubles late in his career with Colorado, and, says former Avalanche trainer Pat Karns, “we had to work on Patrick daily [to keep his hips healthy].” Roy avoided surgery for the condition, but some A-listers from the generation that grew up idolizing, and imitating, St. Patrick have not been so lucky: the Ducks’ Jean-Sébastien Giguère, the Islanders’ Rick DiPietro, the Flyers’ Antero Niittymaki, the Maple Leafs’ Vesa Toskala and the Sabres’ Patrick Lalime are just some of the active goalies who needed surgery to shave the heads of their femurs into perfect spheres. “My hips were always sore [before surgery],” says Giguère. “I was fighting against them every time on the ice.”
The hip condition, femoroacetabular impingement, also tends to manifest itself as back pain or groin pulls. If the condition goes unrecognized (an MRI after a dye injection into the joint is the best way to spot a torn labrum), a goalie could be at risk for early arthritis. Some precaution—avoiding deep squats with heavy weights, for example—can minimize the stress on the joint but won’t necessarily prevent injury, says Philippon. The butterfly is so effective in closing off the lower portion of the net that goalies will use it regardless of the risk. Six years after Roy’s retirement his influence is still felt, often painfully.

Bears update, via Tim Leone
Based on Friday’s practice, it looks like defenseman Greg Amadio could return to the Hershey Bears’ lineup for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals Saturday against the Manchester Monarchs.
“We’ll make that determination after the morning skate tomorrow,” Bears head coach Mark French said. “It’s a possibility, for sure.”
Amadio suffered a shoulder injury in Game 1 against Albany. If Amadio is in the lineup, it looks like Zach Miskovic would be out and Sean Collins would return to playing his natural right side.
Mathieu Perreault (lower body) and John Carlson (family death) practiced. Perreault didn’t participate in a 3-on-3 down low drill.
Caps prospect Stefan Della Rovere, whose OHL season with Barrie ended, joined the Bears. There’s a good chance he’ll be on Hershey’s roster in 2010-11.
