Saturday Caps Clips: Avs @ Caps Game Day

Say, you look kinda ... familiar. Do we know you from somewhere?

Your savory Saturday brunch links:

  • Japers' Rink Radio hits the interwaves at 10 Eastern. Russell and Pepper welcome CSN's Alan May to the program. On tap: leadership, streaks both good and bad, and a look at Scotty Hannan, four games in. [JRR]
  • Previews of tonight's clash with Colorado from Vogs, NHL.com (Hunter), SB Nation DC, RtR, RLS and KOL, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Mile High Hockey for more coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
  • The flu bug has hit. Hard. [CI (Carrera)]
  • Scoring goals is key to winning games. And that goes double if you're the Washington Capitals. [WaPo (Carrera)]
  • Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, and Jason Chimera share their thoughts on the scoring slump.  [CSN Washington video, Elliot in the Morning audio]
  • Of low points, lost rooms, and panic buttons. [Box Seats, Caps News Network, Dump 'n Chase]
  • Mathieu Perreault on playing in D.C. [CSN Washington (video)]
  • Hannan (and I'm paraphrasing): "I'm just happy to be here, taking it one game at a time, hope I can help the tea... OMG what's with all these cameras following me all over the place!"  [NHL Live! (mp3)]
  • Gentlemen, let's take this outside:
  • The Caps are beating the Wiz on the telly... barely. [D.C. Sports Bog]
  • The AHL has announced the captains for the 2011 All-Star Game in Hershey. Fittingly, two former Bears will return to the Giant Center to face off under the Calder Cup banners they each helped raise. Congratulations and welcome back, Alexandre Giroux  (2009, 2010) and Mark Wotton (2006).  [The Hershey Bears]
  • On a related note, Giroux scored two goals against the Manitoba Moose on Friday night. They were career goals #317 & 318, moving him to number 14 on the AHL all-time scoring list, and putting him just ahead of ... Bruce Boudreau. [The AHL, via Twitter]
  • Cody Eakin has been in beast mode on his way to Team Canada camp - 6 goals and 3 assists for 9 points in his final three games before leaving for the national team.  Also, he's been playing his Swift Current season with a torn hip muscle and a "badly infected elbow."  [Taking Note]
  • Finally, today's Living Social deal is 50% off a ticket to "Greenlife Rock for Charity." Pretty cool. [Living Social]

And now we understand why Giroux was given every opportunity to stick in the NHL while he was with this organization…

Notes from today’s morning skate:

Matty just tried the Omark move. Didn’t work.

What lack of respect!

What lack of skill!

Send him back to the AHL!

He needs to be taught a lesson. Off to the E for you, kid. Stingrays City.

Since he’s a Euro, I’m sure Cherry will agree tonight on HNIC. Still, it amazed me how the TBL players reacted.

Also, all the guys who were sick and did not skate yesterday are on the ice today. Not on the ice this a.m. – Mike Green.

I think BB will mix-n-match 27 -74 – 3 – 23 as the top two pairings, with 4 – 44 sent in to spell the others.

MJ90, DJ King, and (healthy but still on IR) Sloan on press box nacho duty tonight, Neuvy on ball cap bench duty.

Sloan is eligible to return tomorrow.

And according to Adrian Dater, Anderson in goal for the Avs (surprising, since he played last night).

Also, those going to the game: Toys for Tots drive tonight (unwrapped toy = BL21 poster).

I’m glad it will be 4-44 instead of 89-44. If Sloan and Fahey were paired, there might be area-wide cases of nervous breakdowns.

There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.

But, luckily for us, Oisk is higher in the pecking order than Sloan.

Dan Ellis needs to get paid more if he’s going to be required to stop such shots.

Caps are now paying 25 salaries that are being charged to the cap. All that is taking its toll — they now can’t afford Brad Richards by the trade deadline without moving out an NHL salary.

Which doesn’t mean much, because they’re probably not getting Richards without giving up some NHL talent. But still…

Should Dallas fall out of the playoff picture by late Jan/early Feb, I’ve got to think MP (or the other guy) would be sent down then. The Caps have Gordon to fill in as the 3L center for the month. Would that do the trick?

There are lots of ways to do it — this really isn’t a problem. But yeah, that would likely do it.

Caps ain’t going to carry 25 players all year (at least, I hope not)

Streaky good play, nothing that hasn’t been seen before. Hopefully he finds more lasting success there though.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Dec 11, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Don’t know if you saw the game, but his pass to set up Hejduk was gorgeous. He looked like he was going wraparound, but pushed the puck to Hejduk on the near side – it caught the goalie leaning to the far post and Hejduk had 2/3 of the net to shoot at.

And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.

I hope he has lots of success against the other 14 teams in the Eastern Conference. Every year I hope the teams in the West go 17-1 against the East (or 16-2 if they play the Caps twice) during the season.

First time he’s mentioned I’ll applaud (except if he scores a goal, of course), but after that, he’s another talented opposing player. I will say it sure looks like the change of scenery has done him some good…

I can’t believe only 36,000 households watch the average Caps game. 34k watch the Wizards.

Add in average attendance and the gap is quite a bit wider.

It’s also said in the article that viewership increases towards the end of the season for the Caps, and drops for the Wizards.

Caps are beating the WiZ in ratings??? We better get out of this slump soon.

Lightning Whines...

Not something you can pick up at the ABC store, but the Bolts are whining again. After Omark’s amazing shootout goal last night that clinched the Oilers win in the shootout, the Bolts whined to the media about how this kid was showing off and showing them up.

Guess what Bolts… the puck went in, the Oilers won. It’s not showing off if it gets the result. First they whine about linesmen getting intimidated, and now they whine about losing a shootout because the guy has some style. I guess if they make the playoffs they’ll whine when their opponent turns up the intensity a few notches… and they’ll get bounced out in the first round…

Good catch, Spidey. Katie reported on Friday that 6 were down with the flu: Green, Laich, Carlson, Semin, Backstrom and Gordon. Green skated on Friday, but not today. Carlson sat out Friday, but he skated today. I guess the fact that Fahey was recalled makes people think that one of the D is sitting out, but it hasn’t been confirmed at all. Only DJ King and Marjo skated after practice with Varly.
It could be that since they’ve got back-to-back games, the team wanted to keep an extra D up, just in case someone goes down tonight (not sure if Sloan’s IR would have expired by then).
