Question of the Day — are the Caps having practice today? If so, it is “optional”?
Rocking the Red since 1975
Few “60 minute” games, Ovechkin playing very “un-Ovi” like, Green out for several games, same for Poti and Varly, Backstrom inconsistent, rookies playing key roles on defense and in goal, a sputtering powerplay. Yet, there they are this morning, leading the Eastern Conference and tied for first in points in the entire league. Interesting times we live in.

Cute little interview of our favorite VideoEditor/CapsReportHost/PracticeGoalie/WarmupsDJ (quite a few hats for the young buck).

Can I get a who’s who in this picture? I guess second from the left is Katie, and Stretch is the tall one of course.

I love Brad’s dry wit in the Globe and Mail piece on Ovi. He’s got to be the funniest guy on the team.
"When I’m done I can always say I played with Ovechkin. My kids probably won’t believe me," he said. "I’ll have to get a picture taken with him."
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?
"I'm not going to tell!"
Well can you at least guarantee fifty?
"No way. I have a different objective. To win."
So then is Semin AO’s goldfish, central to the show but hardly the star and never speaks?
I’m already looking forward to the game against Philly. Another tough opponent, and I really want to see this guy Brobovsky.
He lost the rookie game to our guys, but he didn’t exactly have Pronger, et al, in front of him.
"It's always good to have vikings."
he also wasn’t facing Ovie, Backstrom, Green, and Semin. ;)

Also true. I’m looking forward to this game.
As an aside, Caps have to dress King for this game, don’t they? There’s too much pugilism on that team to go without at least a threat. Then again, there IS Hendricks, but he’s not a heavyweight.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Bobrovsky seems, to me, like a poor man’s Varlamov. He’s very athletic but not quite as explosive as Varlamov (but if he can stay healthy it won’t matter to PHI fans). He also seems to scramble a lot and every time I’ve watched him I’ve come away thinking that he made some nice saves but also got real lucky. I guess it’s better to be lucky than good, but I’m waiting for the regression.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
but if he can stay healthy it won’t matter to PHI fans
Games played:
Varly 2
Bob 9
Bobrovsky has some decent stats, too. Any other questions?
"It's always good to have vikings."
I love how the guy in the Kirk’s Call link thinks two bad goals given up in back to back games in November automatically means the Caps don’t have the goaltending to win. Hey, the Bs can’t win with that sort of defense from Chara—can’t play defense at all! -4!

Wait, what?
52 on 28, per Corey: ""He’s just a great player," Green said. "He’s so skilled and anytime he has the puck I think he’s the most dangerous guy in this League.
Poor, illiterate Mike Green. Won’t somebody bring him up to speed. (and speaking of speed: even as a longtime admirer of Green’s wheels, I thought he was skating extremely well last night. Maybe it was better decision-making, but he seemed so very sure and swift and fluid in all transitions that I missed a few plays just watching him skate.

Pilot on our US Airways flight here wished Keith Aucoin a happy 32nd birthday over the PA system on the flight somewhere over VA today.
Very cool. Are the Bears taking planes these days to away games? Even cooler!

I wonder exactly how much time they saved doing that? If they’re flying commercial, that means all the headaches that go with it. Get there early, wait to board, probably not a direct flight.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Think you could fly direct from H’burg to Charlotte. Probably, anyway.

yep. Charlotte’s airport has a rather surprising number of flights to cities big and small.

I went to watch practice this morning and most of the players were on the ice, except for Semin and Backstrom. Ovi was skating on a line with Hendricks and Johansson. The 2nd and 3rd lines consisted of most of their current cast of characters. The 4th line consisted of King, Stecks, and Bradley.
CI has posted some stories on practice. Reports that Johansson was “bored” sitting out. Semin and Backstrom were missing since they weren’t feeling well and Boudreau gave them the day off.

Just saw that…interesting. I hope it’s just to get him some game time to make sure the hip is okay.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Yeah most likely just for some conditioning (even though it isn’t a official conditioning stint as far as I can tell). The Bears have games on Sunday and Tuesday so maybe he will be back for the game on Friday against Tampa.
Marcus is a rookie and they can assign him to Hershey at will. “Conditioning stint” is a legal-ish term they use to shield the veterans from having to clear waivers.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
“Conditioning stint” also carries specific requirements about # of days/games allowed before the waiver clock starts again.

It’s like Varly’s assignment to Hershey last year that was, in reality, a “conditioning stint” even if they don’t want to say so.
Rocking the Red since 1975
If it’s a conditioning stint, he would still count against the cap, right? So I guess this is getting him some ice time in Hershey and saving a bit of money too.
by red army line on Nov 7, 2010 3:46 AM EDT up reply actions
Conditioning stint? I was a little surprised (not that he couldn’t benefit from big ice time down there).
per Mike Vogel:
#Caps reassignment of Marcus Johansson to Hershey is not officially/technically a conditioning assigment. But from team’s viewpoint it is.
Bruce kind of hinted at it in his post-practice presser. It didn’t sound like he wanted Johannson in the game against Philly.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Yes, he did. I saw that and sorta thought “Hershey.”

Bruce isn’t a total idiot. The Flyers are going to run around and goon it up; any team that dresses Carcillo on a nightly basis is flat-out trying to hurt people.

Carcillo pisses people off (a poor-man’s Avery). Pronger hurts.
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
Disagree completely. Carcillo hasn’t ended someone’s career yet through sheer happenstance. He’s a dirty sonofabitch and not in the way that Sean Avery is. Pronger is mean, Carcillo is a sociopath.

This is not to excuse Stompin’ Chris Pronger’s actions. He’s dirty, but he picks his spots about being dirty. Carcillo is a skating disaster waiting to happen.

Marcus Johansson is on his way to Charlotte, and will wear number 17 on Sunday for Hershey. Bears and Checkers at 3:00 p.m. eastern.

Kirk's Call
1. The Washington Capitals aren’t winning the 2011 Stanley Cup with Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov (and Braden Holtby) in net.
While we are not a perfect team, I’m very comfortable with Neuwirth in net and have no worries about his handling the pressure. I do have worries about Varlamov ever being healthy for long stretches, and it would be nice to have a more experienced back up goalie but once the playoffs come around we would hope to play one netminder all the way through.
Ya Neuvy has looked shaky, in the third periods of the last two games, I don’t think anyone can make the blanket statement that Kirk made at this point in the season. Esp after he won rookie of the month honors.
I’m certainly fine with Neuvy in goal — most of the time. I do think he would benefit from an occasional rest and think starting 70 games during the regular season would be too much.
Rocking the Red since 1975
If there were any questions about Neuvy’s work ethic, he’s put them to rest. We’ve got a goalie who works so hard he injuries himself in Varly, we don’t a goalie who wears himself out in Neuvy.
Don’t make fun of my obsession over ketchup dispensers ever again! ;) Ted Leonsis
I had some idiot lecture me today on how the Caps will never win with their current goalies. Had to resist the urge to punch him in the face.

Why did you have to resist it? Let’s be honest: some people can only learn by…Bongos!

If we read the “tea leaves”, based on the lines in practice today, does that mean Hendricks is a scratch, given that he and Johansson were practicing with Ovi today and we all know what happened to Johannson?

No.

Ovi’s a scratch! Alert the Hockey Night in Canada Hot Stove Panel!
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
Wait. The Caps aren’t going to win the Cup because of their goalies? I thought it was because Ovie always “disappears” in big games. Or was it because they play “fire wagon hockey”? Or because Boudreau is overweight………., etc. etc. etc.
After last Spring's playoff series against the Habs, I knew I had picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
