I’ll be enjoying this regardless of a yet another Capital-snub.. it’s one thing the NHL (note: not NBC) does right.
I guess we can watch it for the US Olympic roster announcement. And maybe, just maybe, Knuble makes Team USA.

I agree, actually. The Winter Classic is fun. I do wish they’d do an outdoor double-header, though, so it would last all day. Maybe just always have a game in Canada, and it doesn’t matter where the other game is.

Also, make sure to read my story in tomorrow’s Post. A source told me today that the league’s priority for next year’s Winter Classic will be getting Ovechkin and the Caps into the annual outdoor classic. (It should be on the web soon).

I don’t really care if the Caps are included in one of these but I’ve never watched one before so maybe I’ll feel differently afterwards.

Here’s the article.
Why wouldn’t you care if the Caps play in the WC next year? It’s great for expanding the fan base, great for hockey as a sport, and is just a fun time all around. It’s on national TV and is by far the most watched regular season NHL game. If it really is Caps vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium in ‘11, I’d make the drive up to NYC for it.

I wonder if they’ll do anything special with Tim Thomas, since he’ll probably make the team and will be at the game.

Love the O’s but I feel like there would be something very wrong with a DC team playing in Baltimore and calling it ‘home’ :)
Agreed. There’s no history, but Nats Park would be fine.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
What about FedEx Field? Huge definitely. Think The Danny would allow a hockey game on his hallowed ground?
Just say no. Everything I hear about Fedex stinks.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
If the Skins are really collapsing in fanbase (or at least fans willing to fork over their cash) you might see Danny contact Bettman himself. :P
FedEx Field blows chunks. Cheap ass slap it up construction, absolutely no personality. Would much rather doll up the dilapidated pig that is now RKF. Smaller, but that place rocked in its day, and certainly not too small for pond hockey. Best idea from earlier in the tread, though, is the Mall. Imagine the spectacle, with Washington Monument and Capitol as backdrops for each net. Smashing. Or, freeze up the Reflecting pool.
I hate how the rink sits in a baseball field (and why the NHL is so in love with it is beyond me). It’s great for TV (and their profits), terrible for fans actually paying good money to see it in person.
So for me, FedEx Field is absolutely the place to be.
Its definitely a made for tv event, which is what the NHL is looking for. Its always been a gate driven league, they wanted something that would attract a huge television audience, and they got it. I would feel screwed paying that much for awful seats if I went to one of these at a baseball stadium.
FedEx isnt great, the atmosphere is stale, the seats are crammed together, the concessions are sky high, which is why im pushing for RFK, its got the atmosphere, the metro access which is a huge selling point, but the drawbacks are just as big as FedEx, its old, falling apart, etc etc. Maybe the solution is going in as the away team at Citi Field or Yankee Stadium (if they can logistically make it work)
What about College Park, if you want a football stadium?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
That actually wouldnt be a half bad idea and its not something awhole lot of people are thinking about. Email Ted, stat!
I looked it up, capacity 51,500. That’s a little larger than a baseball stadium, but much smaller than Fedex. It could work. Bet the University would be excited to do it, too. (I have NO association with UMd, so that’s not why I think it’s a good idea.)
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
And college football ends in November so there would be no stadium conflicts. It would really help the University considering the football team has been a huge let down as of late.
I’m giving the Caps playing at College Park about a 0.00001% chance of happening.

That really has nothing to do with it. The stadium isn’t as large as FedEx and doesn’t have obstructed view seats. It would be a great place to play an outdoor hockey game, college rooting interests aside.
It’s not at all accessible for me, is the major reason. I don’t want to drive that far when the game can be held at Nationals Park, and I can metro. Maryland meant the whole state, not the college.

The University of Maryland is on the Metro, so it’s just as accessible (and has better parking for people not using public transportation) as Nationals Park. Wouldn’t FedEx be more unaccessible than UMD?
1) Haven’t clamored at all for FedEx
2) Kind of against using a college campus when there’s other venue’s potentially available.

If RFK didn’t have the bowl game, it’d be a perfect venue. Otherwise, Byrd is pretty kickass, and I’d rather be there then Fedex or Nationals park
Well you all realize that the Caps will never host a WC game, right? The weather is too unpredictable in this area for the NHL/NBC to even consider it. BUT if it ever did, I would much rather see it somewhere unconventional i.e. not a stadium (baseball/football/soccer/etc.). But if I had to pick a stadium, I’d choose Byrd. If you’ve never been there, then you wouldn’t understand.
I don’t see why not? It was plenty cold today, and certainly all week for a decent sheet to freeze. Hell, it might’ve been as good as that Boston ice looked today.

One thing I remember reading was Bill Daly saying something along the lines of “it just needs to be lower than 50 degrees” or something. So it should be feasible.
by DrinkingPartner on Jan 1, 2010 6:22 PM EST up reply actions
But honestly that was today. I’ve seen New Years days around here that are far from conventional for this time of year. I think it would be risky for the NHL to pick anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic. The weather here is way too fluky and rather inconsistent…kinda like Jizz.
I had a ’Jizz’s consistency’ comment ready to go, but I’m pretty sure I’d get banned.

I do, but I’m also saying that I don’t like Byrd. I’ve been to several stadiums in the area, and you like one stadium. Personally, I prefer the idea of Nats Park, or somewhere closer to downtown or me. It doesn’t really matter if I have been there or not – it’s not close to me, and I hold no personal connection to it, which you seem to, and that’s fine.

It really has nothing to do with my Maryland roots or not. I’m just saying – as a spectator – the sight lines from any seat in the stadium would be fantastic. I’m not a fan of watching a sporting event with an obstructed view. Hell, I would go to any WC in this area, no matter where it was. I would just like it to be somewhere where I can actually see the game.
I’m a Maryland hater – the whole state. Born and raised right here in NoVa. Although I did once have a great girlfriend from the Catonsville area.
If you ask, we can say. I’ve been in this area a long time, in NOVA, and all of the papers, news outlets, all of them only report on DC and Maryland sports, and in baseball, it’s always been Orioles, even after the Nats come. There was a time (TV Dispute, I know) when I had the O’s game on 3 TV stations, and couldn’t find a Nats game. Also, we get TONS of news reports on University of Maryland and the Ravens, two places I have no attachment for and get forced down my throat by turning on a television. I get numerous jokes from friends from MD about how “Oh, how awful Virginia is” when the areas of MD I’ve been to are just about the same. And frankly, I hate listening to the sports junkies talk about how stoked they are for MD.

Sorry don’t remember halftime. Don’t remember much but the stadium being half empty at halftime and some WVA fan trying to start stuff with our student section. I believe he was told to go feck his cousin…or was it his sister? either way…it was a great game for us Terps fans. It was the last good bowl we won.
It wasn’t even close. I’m glad you didn’t remember halftime, because it was a mass high school thing, and most of the kids couldn’t play or didn’t learn their music, and I recall marching off the field embarrassed.

Aww that sucks. I’m embarrassed watching Maryland’s marching band. I was in marching band in HS (I didn’t play, I did flags) so I always felt like a band snob when it came to marching. We did competitions all the time, so we always saw amazing bands.
Our high school band won the overall high school competition associated with Gator Bowl. After going through college at a school without a Marching Band, I still consider myself a marching band snob, and hopefully I get to teach my own soon.

I’m a fan of the arts. Art saved me in high school. My nephew loves to sing and play instruments and he’s 8. He goes to a catholic school, so they have a choir and band, but if he were in public school, he wouldn’t have the oppurtunity. It’s sad that when they need to make budget cuts in the school system, the arts are the first to go.
I’ve lived in Maryland my whole life minus some time in NYC, but I can’t relate to you on being force fed anything. But all I ever had as a kid growing up were the Orioles and we did have folks trying to force feed the Skins on us. My rents told me I wasn’t allowed to root for any team from DC, but I rebelled by rooting for the Bullets and Caps.
Haha, I grew up with a dad from Dayton Ohio, who tried to instill a love of Reds baseball and Bengals football, but spending time in Germany and this area got me into Soccer and Hockey.

Hard to put my finger on it. Born in NoVa, I just have a tremendous distaste for Maryland, except for the downtown Bethesda area. All other parts of MD around the Beltway just plain suck. Baltimore … eh. My wife wanted to look at some houses in MD a few years back, I refused, would never consider living MD. Sorry, nothing real solid here if you are looking for rational arguments, it’s just a personal dislike with no real logical grounding.
Without dragging politics in here too far, I think VDoT might improve for NOVA residents soon.
But I’m not sure – I’ll always remember driving north on 295 to Glen Burnie to visit my fiancee, and having seen tons of signs saying “WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES”, and then seeing three or four groups of 6-8 motorcyclists speeding down the road doing tricks.

The problem right there are the words “Glen Burnie” I hate being on 97 and approaching that area. that’s where I always see the crazy motorcycle assholes. My folks actually saw a couple wipe out coming back from OC one weekend. We found out later the guy died.
I don’t mind Glen Burnie itself, though. I don’t like Baltimore much. I had a bad experience where my brother came close to getting mugged while walking back to our hotel from a Subway. It’s like there’s a 7 block safe zone, and the rest of the city is needing to be avoided.

I’m used to Baltimore, but I work in the inner harbor, so I’m in the “safe zone” I usually hang out in places like Canton and Federal Hill. (sometimes Fells Point) There are areas that are a lot safer than people think.
I love me some Max’s in Fells Point and Pub Dog in Federal Hill. Those areas are great for hanging out, nothing gets too outrageous but there’re enough people around to make it fun.

It’s human nature. I’m an electrician and i’ve worked all over the DC-Bmore metro areas and it’s all the same. You can find a place in MD and VA that are just about the same everywhere you go.
There are cross state rivalrys around Major cities all over the country.
It’s all in what you know and what you’re comfortable with.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
thats why you dont generalize! I live in rural Maryland and its not nearly as ghetto as the Metro area.

There is only one place I’ve been in this big ass country that I swore to myself I would never go again: Morgantown, WV.
I’d prefer RFK, but I’ve come to accept that it’s not going to happen. FedEx at least seems ‘doable’ but the reality is that the NHL is probably afraid that DC fans couldn’t fill all those seats, which would require a (VERY) local opponent.
So yeah, expect an away game.
I understand the fear of DC fans not filling it up, but heres my rebuttal to that:
1. DC United vs Real Madrid nearly filled it
2. DC fans show up for an event
3. There are more hockey fans than soccer fans (of which I am both)
4. Redskins fans embarrass themselves on national tv not filling up the joint, if the “lowly” Caps can 3/4’s fill it and with the visiting team getting about 1/4 of the fans, it’ll be a gigantic success at the gate.
You and I both know, with a decent opponent, DC could do it.
The NHL, I’m sure, doesn’t even want to risk it.
You also know about 25-33% of the fans in the stadium would be visiting fans. The Sabres-Pens game had tons of Pens fans, and I remember lots of Wings fans last year.

Rfk is the only venue that makes sense. It’s iconic. Imagine the seats going up and down after an Ovi goal. Move the eagle bowl to Nats park…weatheris the biggest issue though.
I could live with RFK, even though it’s a dump. But, yeah, the bowl game gives the same problem that Yankee Stadium has now.

Mike Wilbon’s going to have another heart attack after Northwestern screwed the pooch there.
"I know it holds 17 1/2 beers."
They need to put these games on football fields. Find a team that plays away for 2 or 3 weeks and set it up there. They showed some views from the seats and it looks terrible. An outdoor game is cool, but I’d take an regular game lower level ticket over one of these tickets anyday.
I don’t remember it being much better in Buffalo.

Here’s an idea to kick around. What about a dedicated soccer stadium. The one in Columbus is very nice. The sightlines would be better all around. Thoughts?
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
In the states, around 25-35,000. I’m not sure but i think CBus is around 20,000.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
I’ve been to the stadium. It’s pretty much in a home depot parking lot. I liked the feel of it. I went to the College Cup when it was there back in 2003
If you’re playing a game in Columbus, it has to be at the Horseshoe.

I’ve never been, so I can’t comment in regards to the Horseshoe. But the area around Columbus Crew’s stadium is not very nice. I wasn’t very impressed with the parts of Columbus that I saw.
I’ve only seen it on TV so i’ll take your word on it. I like the idea of a venue that size though. It would probably have to have more room outside the stadium for the extra events that the NHL has around the game. Kinda like the NASCAR races have stuff to do outside the track.
I’m likeing the idea of the Reflecting Pool a whole lot also.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
Reflecting Pool will never happen. The security matters will never allow it (no overhead shots for starters). Also, they’re not going to want the expense of constructing temporary seating. Would be cool, though.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
A football field sounds like a good idea, especially if a baseball stadium is not available. My personal choice for next year’s Winter Classic will be ………. Rangers vs Caps at Nationals Park. (NY is only slightly colder than Washington. For its latitude, NY is actually relatively warm.)
Now how does it work for Season ticket holders (of the home team) getting tickets for the WC? Do they instantly get tickets? Or right of first refusal? My recommendation on priority: 1) Home team Season ticket holders; 2) Visiting team season ticket holders; 3) General public (but of course, ticket buyers for both teams that aren’t STH’s get a crack before the really general public).

I’ve worked in condos in that area for the last 2+yrs. The last one was Lincoln Condos at New Jersey Ave. down from the Micky D’s on South Capital. The parking in the area is extremely limited but it is becoming a very nice neighborhood. It’s a bit of a walk from the Navy Yard metro, though.
Much better than the old wherehouses that used to be there.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
Actually, the park’s close to a Metro stop but you have to come out the right entrance.
Rocking the Red since 1975
The closest metro stop for me is Howard Rd. so i wouldn’t use it anyway but the Navy Yard exit is still a few blocks is’nt it? It’s at least on the other side of Potomac Ave.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
not at all. Navy Yard has exits at Half & M SE (at the ballpark) and M & NJ SE, on the western edge of the DoT complex. It’s a 30 second walk down half street to the center field gate.

I love coming back on the road. It’s a harder feat. I forgot about the Rangers game. (so soon?) But yes, Rangers and Flyers are in the top, too.
I liked the Edmonton game, more of an individual effort on Ovi’s part, but the 4-2 Philly game was probably the best because it was a team effort.

Team USA Allegiance
After having witnessed the so-called “Miracle on Ice” (at least on TV) it feels strange to be rooting for the Russians against my own country this time. Then again, the Olympics ain’t what it used to be, i.e. purported amateurs (the West) playing against thinly disguised professionals ( the CCCP and the Eastern bloc). Now it’s more like the all-star game. Kind of makes me miss the Cold War days… Just kidding, I think.
I agree with you. I’ll be with you in rooting for Team Russia this time. I agree, I loved the “Miracle an Ice” and the resulting movie but it’s not the same.
Team USA now has the guys who symbolize many of our arch-rivals, like Parise of NJ and Miller of Buffalo.
Rocking the Red since 1975
I think, for a couple weeks at least, we can forget that these guys are on teams we hate. I want USA Hockey to take it to Canada so bad and prove we belong. I normally never rooted for Team USA when they had the likes of Tkachuk, Modano, Chelios, Weight, etc, but with the youth movement these guys are generally likable. I’ll be rooting for Russia and Sweden too when they dont play Team USA though.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be damn proud if USA wins the Gold especially now that I live overseas even though hockey isn’t a big topic here in the Philippines, for obvious reasons. But my favorite players are all playing for other teams so I guess my main allegiance is to the Caps. And especially not to Team Canada for snubbing Greenie.
