Ooh you read my mind, I was going to ask if you’d make a GDT for this. Will there be GDTs for the Olympics?

I’ll be enjoying this regardless of a yet another Capital-snub.. it’s one thing the NHL (note: not NBC) does right.

I guess we can watch it for the US Olympic roster announcement. And maybe, just maybe, Knuble makes Team USA.

I agree, actually. The Winter Classic is fun. I do wish they’d do an outdoor double-header, though, so it would last all day. Maybe just always have a game in Canada, and it doesn’t matter where the other game is.

So, Rats, who are you all cheering for? The Flyers are the Flyers but the Bruins are much more of a threat in the standings.
Standings will never top my hatred for the Flyers, so just for today I think it’s “Let’s go Bruins.” Sighhh…

While the Flyers are certainly a dirty team, who seem to go out of their way to acquire goons, and who I refer to as Philthy, I still consider the Penguins a greater evil.

Okay, I’m not the one who came up with Philthy but think it’s appropro.

In my case, I’ll root for anyone over the Pens. And was not happy that the Flyers lost to them twice in the same week.

Must admit that my hatred for the Pens started as a result of hating the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. Yes, that’s going way back since it’s been a while since the Pirates have been any good.

Also, make sure to read my story in tomorrow’s Post. A source told me today that the league’s priority for next year’s Winter Classic will be getting Ovechkin and the Caps into the annual outdoor classic. (It should be on the web soon).

Here’s the article.
Why wouldn’t you care if the Caps play in the WC next year? It’s great for expanding the fan base, great for hockey as a sport, and is just a fun time all around. It’s on national TV and is by far the most watched regular season NHL game. If it really is Caps vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium in ‘11, I’d make the drive up to NYC for it.

Yea but the article says the Rangers might not work.

Caps vs Blackhawks would be an amazing winter classic games. Two great expanding young teams with lots of offense. But that would have to be in Chicago to be cold enough.

I tend to think that NBC would want something closer to a natural rivalry, but Wysh tweeted something like this earlier (not as a rumor or anything, just as a possibility in his eyes). And, frankly, I suppose that if Caps in Yankee Stadium doesn’t work out, there aren’t really any rivals left to host us. Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are all out, and it’s hard to imagine NJD or NYI getting one before NYR. That’s all the U.S.-based teams outside of the Southeast.

I know why one might think so, but I very much doubt PIT is ‘out’. The 8/87 storyline is right up NBC’s cookie-cutter marketing alley. If Caps get past PIT this spring, pitching the Classic as an Ovechkin/Crosby Decisive Showdown for the Ages is too easy for NBCHL not to do it.

RFK has the history, but it’s a really horrible, run-down venue at this point. Nationals Park is a great venue but has no history. Do you remember a few months ago when there were rumors of a Pens-Caps showdown on the Mall? Now THAT would be an outdoor DC hockey game to watch. Preferably not vs. the Pens though.

I almost feel inclined to boycott if it’s Caps/Pens. I do not want Alex (and the rest of the team) to have to share the spotlight with Sid. For one day, let him have it alone.

Rangers are going to want to the the host team when/if they play, so if it can’t be at Yankee Stadium, Caps/Rangers is probably off. If NBC is going to be queasy about the Caps being the headliner, who’s a good opponent that they’ll accept, who hasn’t played in it yet?

by jakeshapiro on Jan 1, 2010 11:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I get the feeling it’s not a consideration with the Rangers. Citi Field is on Long Island, and that would be considered Islanders territory. Nothing official, just my impression. And I wouldn’t be against playing the Islanders, but I can’t see that happening right now.

Honestly, the weather in NYC is pretty much the same as in DC, so why not have it here against whoever? They came thisclose to having rain in Boston, so I don’t really want to hear the weather argument any more.

FedEx Field blows chunks. Cheap ass slap it up construction, absolutely no personality. Would much rather doll up the dilapidated pig that is now RKF. Smaller, but that place rocked in its day, and certainly not too small for pond hockey. Best idea from earlier in the tread, though, is the Mall. I hate how the rink sits in a baseball field (and why the NHL is so in love with it is beyond me). It’s great for TV (and their profits), terrible for fans actually paying good money to see it in person.

So for me, FedEx Field is absolutely the place to be.

by TFG on Jan 1, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Its definitely a made for tv event, which is what the NHL is looking for. Its always been a gate driven league, they wanted something that would attract a huge television audience, and they got it. I would feel screwed paying that much for awful seats if I went to one of these at a baseball stadium.

FedEx isnt great, the atmosphere is stale, the seats are crammed together, the concessions are sky high, which is why im pushing for RFK, its got the atmosphere, the metro access which is a huge selling point, but the drawbacks are just as big as FedEx, its old, falling apart, etc etc. Maybe the solution is going in as the away team at Citi Field or Yankee Stadium (if they can logistically make it work)

BUT if it ever did, I would much rather see it somewhere unconventional i.e. not a stadium (baseball/football/soccer/etc.). But if I had to pick a stadium, I’d choose Byrd. If you’ve never been there, then you wouldn’t understand.

by terpgrrl on Jan 1, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see why not? It was plenty cold today, and certainly all week for a decent sheet to freeze. Hell, it might’ve been as good as that Boston ice looked today.

One thing I remember reading was Bill Daly saying something along the lines of “it just needs to be lower than 50 degrees” or something. So it should be feasible.

But honestly that was today. I’ve seen New Years days around here that are far from conventional for this time of year. I think it would be risky for the NHL to pick anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic. The weather here is way too fluky and rather inconsistent…kinda like Jizz.

I do, but I’m also saying that I don’t like Byrd. I’ve been to several stadiums in the area, and you like one stadium. Personally, I prefer the idea of Nats Park, or somewhere closer to downtown or me. It doesn’t really matter if I have been there or not – it’s not close to me, and I hold no personal connection to it, which you seem to, and that’s fine.

It really has nothing to do with my Maryland roots or not. I’m just saying – as a spectator – the sight lines from any seat in the stadium would be fantastic. I’m not a fan of watching a sporting event with an obstructed view. Hell, I would go to any WC in this area, no matter where it was. I would just like it to be somewhere where I can actually see the game.

If you ask, we can say. I’ve been in this area a long time, in NOVA, and all of the papers, news outlets, all of them only report on DC and Maryland sports, and in baseball, it’s always been Orioles, even after the Nats come. There was a time (TV Dispute, I know) when I had the O’s game on 3 TV stations, and couldn’t find a Nats game. Also, we get TONS of news reports on University of Maryland and the Ravens, two places I have no attachment for and get forced down my throat by turning on a television. I get numerous jokes from friends from MD about how “Oh, how awful Virginia is” when the areas of MD I’ve been to are just about the same. And frankly, I hate listening to the sports junkies talk about how stoked they are for MD.

He goes to a catholic school, so they have a choir and band, but if he were in public school, he wouldn’t have the oppurtunity. It’s sad that when they need to make budget cuts in the school system, the arts are the first to go.

I’d prefer RFK, but I’ve come to accept that it’s not going to happen. FedEx at least seems ‘doable’ but the reality is that the NHL is probably afraid that DC fans couldn’t fill all those seats, which would require a (VERY) local opponent.

So yeah, expect an away game.

by TFG on Jan 1, 2010 12:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the fear of DC fans not filling it up, but heres my rebuttal to that:
1. DC United vs Real Madrid nearly filled it
2. DC fans show up for an event
3. There are more hockey fans than soccer fans (of which I am both)
4. Redskins fans embarrass themselves on national tv not filling up the joint, if the “lowly” Caps can 3/4’s fill it and with the visiting team getting about 1/4 of the fans, it’ll be a gigantic success at the gate.

The thing here is not getting DC fans embarrassed. I think we’d all except that there would be visiting fans for such a huge event like this, the team would just need to make sure that we are the clear majority.

by DonCaps819 on Jan 1, 2010 12:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that has to do with how they allot tickets for the opposing team’s season ticket holders. The remain tickets go into the lottery pool and I’m pretty sure that the people putting their names in are disproportionately fans of the visiting team.

Rfk is the only venue that makes sense. It’s iconic. Imagine the seats going up and down after an Ovi goal. Move the eagle bowl to Nats park…weatheris the biggest issue though.

by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 1, 2010 1:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I could live with RFK, even though it’s a dump. But, yeah, the bowl game gives the same problem that Yankee Stadium has now.

Rfk is not exactly a palace, but neither I’d Fenway. The configuration at rfk would be perfect for hockey. Better than a baseball stadium. Fed ex too big and just say no to Danny.

The big difference is that there’s actual money put into Fenway.

They need to put these games on football fields. Find a team that plays away for 2 or 3 weeks and set it up there. They showed some views from the seats and it looks terrible. An outdoor game is cool, but I’d take an regular game lower level ticket over one of these tickets anyday.

by terpgrrl on Jan 1, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve only seen it on TV so i’ll take your word on it. I like the idea of a venue that size though. It would probably have to have more room outside the stadium for the extra events that the NHL has around the game. Kinda like the NASCAR races have stuff to do outside the track.

I’m likeing the idea of the Reflecting Pool a whole lot also.

If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!

by dlw66 on Jan 1, 2010 6:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Reflecting Pool will never happen. The security matters will never allow it (no overhead shots for starters). Also, they’re not going to want the expense of constructing temporary seating. Would be cool, though.

A football field sounds like a good idea, especially if a baseball stadium is not available. My personal choice for next year’s Winter Classic will be ………. Rangers vs Caps at Nationals Park. (NY is only slightly colder than Washington. For its latitude, NY is actually relatively warm.)

Now how does it work for Season ticket holders (of the home team) getting tickets for the WC? Do they instantly get tickets? Or right of first refusal? My recommendation on priority: 1) Home team Season ticket holders; 2) Visiting team season ticket holders; 3) General public (but of course, ticket buyers for both teams that aren’t STH’s get a crack before the really general public).

It would be awesome but it’s not even close to 1980. Team USA is quite literally in the same league as CAN, RUS, SWE. Those 1980 kids were NCAA players; barely above the WJC level.

Way too early to be an eye toward Sochi. Quick doesn’t have the track record to make me think he’s a lock for 2014 and I’m not even sure he’ll still be the LAK starter then.

In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 1, 2010 6:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree. The third guy is just along for the experience, unless both of the top guys go down for the medal round which is possible but very unlikely. I don’t see a reason to take him over Anderson unless it’s to get him international experience and the ultimate point of that experience is to groom him to actually play for Team USA in the future, be that in Sochi or elsewhere.

Goalie careers are unpredictable at best, even if you can’t predict the starter four years from now, it doesn’t make sense to freeze your potential future players out of the roster. To me, this move says that Burke/Wilson think that Quick is the most likely of the available candidates to be their guy when Miller and Thomas are gone.

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 1, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

First, there’s no reason to think Miller won’t still be playing in Sochi. If there is an American goalie that is likely to start for us then, it’s Miller, definitely not Quick. There’s not reason at all to think Quick is the USA goalie for the future. He came out of nowhere and is hot now, but we’ve seen that fail before. Four years is a long time. It’s not like RUS where they infrequently develop goalies; it makes sense to take Varlamov for grooming because he has pedigree, and is the only Russian goalie in that age group that could potentially take the mantle from Nabby/Bryz. Getting experience works if you know the guy will be there next time around, like Varlamov or Doughty. I don’t think Quick is in that group.

Also, 2 and 3 G are moot unless Miller goes down. If Miller goes down I want a goalie that I’d actually trust playing, not a guy to be groomed. If that’s the case, I take Anderson. Minus the short period after Ballard destroyed him Anderson has had by far the better year than Thomas or Quick. If the 3G ends up playing (or even the 2G) I want it to be Anderson.

In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 1, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not arguing that I necessarily agree with the decision, just what I think the rationale behind it is.

He didn’t quite come out of nowhere, Quick put up respectable numbers in LA starting exactly half of the games last season (2.48 GAA, .914 SV%, 4 SO), although he hasn’t been as good this season until recently. He’s got the physical tools to develop into something approaching an elite goalie – my guess is that we’ll see what he’s made of in the playoffs this spring.

I’m all for starting Miller in every game of the tournament – he’s been the best in the NHL this year by a pretty wide margin. He has had some injuries in the past, though and his numbers are worse in years that he plays more games. How much of that is conflated because of the quality of the teams skating in front of him, I don’t know. Looking at his stat page, I see he’s 29, I had thought he was 31. That makes him playing near his current level a lot more likely, so I’ll concede that he’s the likely option for ’14.

As for who I think we should take for the third, I agree – Anderson has been better this year and has been carrying a COL squad that has no business being ranked as high as it is. I have to think Burkie and Wilson know that though, which makes me look for other motivations for having Quick along.

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 1, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Half a season isn’t what I meant by coming out of nowhere. I meant that he hasn’t been on the radar for very long, wasn’t a Team USA stud in past international competitions, and IIRC wasn’t even that ridiculously awesome in NCAA (including being on a couple of extremely disappointing early tournament exits). I guess it’s close enough to the Vancouver Olympics to think he’ll keep his game at this level, but it’s way premature to even be thinking about Sochi for that guy.

In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 1, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not a huge deal. Miller is the starter and Thomas is more than capable of being a backup. Quick won’t really see time, and methinks it’s like Varly getting a nod in Russia – bring the 2014 kid.

The omissions on the backend are more glaring to me (I mean uh, Jack Johnson and Mike Komisarek?! REALLY?! when you have Ryan Whitney, Andy Greene…….)

by Vinn on Jan 1, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ryan Whitney is so overrated, and Andy Greene has no track record that makes anyone think he’ll sustain this. I have no problem with Komisarek being on this team; going into the season I figured he was a lock. JJ is a bit more surprising, but not completely so.

When the Caps went down 2 games to none in the playoffs, the press in NY were bringing up the fact that it was a replay of the “Miracle on Ice” since one of the people on that team now works with the Rangers, they have BU alums on the team, and the Caps have Russians.

Wasn’t expecting him to be but he’s the first American player to come to my mind in the NHL

AHAHAHAHAHA.

Some flyer was was complaining that the refs weren’t calling things a lot of things before calling that last penalty. Oh Irony. This guy told me to quit bitching about the officiating of the flyers series, so I answered back “Hey, remember during that playoff game where the refs were letting things go until that one call? Yea, kinda sucks doesn’t it.”

I am easily satisfied with the very best

Winter Classic advertising score: Caps 2, Pens 1, Flyers 1. Huzzah!
Also, I hope the two Caps commercials show up on CSN.

I can’t believe they’re not up yet.

Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.

I don’t have DVR (I know I live in the ice age) but I was in transit when the Green commercial aired. I saw the VZW one twice.

I keep saying I’m just going to buy Tivo with the lifetime subscription, but I haven’t yet. I’d get it through comcast, but I already pay enough to their sorry asses.

I got a great deal after one of their sorry ass HD boxes failed on me.

I wasn’t recording the game, and even if I had them on the DVR, that’s as far as they’d get. I’m still a Neanderthal at this web stuff, and I’ll probably stay that way.
