Alex Ovechkin to Miss 4-5 Weeks? Not So Fast...
Earlier this afternoon, Puck Daddy's Dmitry Chesnokov published an interview in which injured Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin was quoted as saying that he "will miss 4-5 weeks."
Per a team spokesman, however, "The Washington Capitals dispute the validity of this report."
Stay tuned.
Update (9/9, 1:15 PM): Per @cmasisak 22, "Ovechkin says he feels better today and only hopes to be out a week. He says he was joking Saturday."

Yes, it is getting absurd. If I’m reading all the news correctly, the team seems to be much more optimistic about Ovi’s chances of coming back than Ovi himself is.
JP, out of curiosity, did this team spokesman contact you directly to dispute the report? Or, if not, how’d they announce this?

This post was up far before that though.

I contacted the team and they gave me the quote.

Well, until everyone else got it, at least.

He’d still play 50 games this season. I doubt anyone gets upset over missing games.

50 in 50 = 50 goals in the team’s first 50 games, whether the individual player plays all 50 or none.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure if he were to knock out 50 goals in 50 games played, no one’s gonna get pissy about it not being the team’s first 50.

I mean, sure, but when you hear people talking about how there are only five members of the 50-in-50 club or things like that, that’s only counting people who met the requirements above. The NHL only recognizes it if it’s in the team’s first 50 games.

To be fair, it’s a false dichotomy though. We’d all rather obviously have the productivity over the title, but if the choice is “the productivity” or “the productivity AND the title”, then obviously we would prefer the latter. Yes, individual achievements are nothing compared to the Cup, and nothing should be done to compromise our Cup chances, but individual achievements are a source of pride for our team and scoring fifty in fifty wouldn’t make us any less likely to get a Cup.

Well you can look at it one of two ways; you can torch Dmitry for putting that in without a better context (or not reading dry humor into things), or you can torch AO for crapping over what the team wants to accomplish vis a vis the injury reports, timelines, etc.

From Tarik:
The Caps have issued the following statement in response to a Yahoo! Sports interview quoting Alex Ovechkin as saying he expects to miss 4-5 weeks: “The Washington Capitals dispute the validity of this report.”
The timeline suggested in the interview, I’m told by a team official, is not accurate. The Caps hope Ovechkin can return sooner, though it’s not possible to determine an exact time frame based on the diagnosis.
Ovechkin suffered a strain near his left (non-shooting) shoulder last Sunday. He’s officially listed by the team as week to week.
That’s good that they’re now saying “it shouldn’t be that long” rather than just “that is not accurate”. With as quick as they came down on it, I was afraid they were trying to keep us from getting our hopes up.

“Non-shooting” shoulder? When did Ovechkin start shooting pucks one-handed?
…just teasing.

The fact that he has three shoulders is secretly the explanation for his abnormal hockey skills.

F* this. I wanna know when Jeff Schultz is coming back. Why isn’t there a daily story on that? Why isn’t AP guessing/making up headlines about Sarge? Can’t we send someone who speaks Canadian after 55 to get the skinny?

Oh, whatever. He’ll get back when he gets back and hopefully when he is 100% healthy and not before. I still say him being out in the short term is a good thing for the team’s confidence and a good learning experience for them.

Yeah, the Caps tooled the Panthers in one period last night, but long-term without Ovechkin, I have serious doubts as to whether this team can perform, especially with Semin off his game. This is seriously worrisome. The Caps are not a one-man team, but that one-man makes a decent middle of the pack team into a league leader.
well, i don’t think I’d call Flash a role player, but he’s definitely doing his part

Semin will find his game. He’s in a slump but it’s not going to last forever. The Caps are a good enough team to hang around .500 without Ovie. In this division, they’ll be ok and maybe even learn some things about winning as a team in the process.
Unless everyone else gets hurt too, of course. As long as Ovie’s timetable is weeks and not months, no need to panic.

Could it be that the Caps are trying to sell single game tickets, and a lot of people might prefer to buy a game where Ovechkin plays.
So if its announced that its 4-5 weeks w/o Ovechkin, that’s a lot less tickets they are going to sell to those games.
Keep it ambiguous, and you sell more tickets.
No, because every game is sold out already.

The Phonebooth was full, and LOUD last night. On a night the fans knew full well they would not see AO, Gangsta, or Sarge.
