Question for those of you in the 1,000+ comment (!) Open Thread last night – was it getting slow there at the end, or was site performance pretty good throughout?

Fine otherwise :)

Hey, J.P. I sort of jokingly asked this last night, but now I’m curious. Do the SBN guys know the record for the most comments on a single post? I’m thinking we can break it with our GDTs.

Not sure, but I’d imagine we’re nowhere close. I bet PPP has some threads that kill 1,000 comments.

They tend to break them up though. They’ll do new threads for each period if they have to. If we’re looking at records I’m gonna guess it’s not a hockey blog. That MMA blog probably has some absurd comment volume on some of their OTs or fight recap posts.

I think the world of Puck Daddy, but his content yesterday was more than thin. He started the day with a cheap shot at Crosby with the story about the urinal cakes, then apparently felt shame and the need to balance it out with a cheap shot at Ovechkin.
Note to PD – some stories are better left unpublished.

Well Semin has to be the pirate by default because he cannot be the ninja. Becoming a ninja requires tons of commitment and focus to hone your skills to their absolute peak. Being a pirate allows you to abide by, uh, “less stringent” professional rules.

Dan Levy – He lumps Alex in with mainly older players at the end of their careers. Reasoning for why Alex will never win the Cup, the Pens and the Caps franchise has never won the Cup before. At least the Pens part I get only because I assume he’s at best a casual hockey fan and doesn’t realize the other young talent Caps have as well. The other part, give me a break. What do Yvon Labre and Brian Engblom have to do with Mike Green and Alexander Ovechkin? Absolutely nothing.

Admittedly, this is not in my wheelhouse as I’ve paid more attention to my wall going from white to yellow to a slightly less tacky yellow to a completely-dry-to-the-touch yellow more than I’ve watched hockey since they came back from the strike or lockout or whatever happened
I always try to backstop specious claims with a full blown admission of ignorance and incompetence at the outset. Makes me feel like I’m doing more of a public service than my job.

Why did he even bother writing this. There are so many interesting, and not interesting stories he could write about sports he cares about. Will Kobe face Shaq for the title? Will Arod get a break? After being slaughtered by the Japanese, are the Phillies dolphins or whales? Why even bother with writing about hockey. I hate those assholes. Either ignore it or actually pay attention to it. Don’t dip your dirty nasty toes in our water if you don’t like our beach.

I surely hope Dan Levy’s wrong. It does seem premature to write off Ovi’s chances of being on a Stanley Cup winner when he hasn’t yet turned 25. (But, there is the pessimistic Caps fan in me that wonders if the franchise is somehow cursed.)
On a more optimistic note, I see parallels between the Caps and the Orioles of the early 80’s. (They even had their very own version of Semin and Ovi; i.e. Eddie Murray and Cal Ripkinm respectively.)
On another more optimistic note, I remember a Washington Redskins team that seemed that they couldn’t seem to get their act together that year but managed to get in first place with some very ugly wins. Those were the Skins of the Doug Williams era who won the Super Bowl that year.

Was 26’s boarding hit that bad? I was watching at a pub, saw the hit and thought they were just calling interference or something. Didn’t seem that nasty but I was admittedly only half paying attention while chatting with pseudo fans most of the night

But it’s better than a full salary doing nothing? Gotta brush up on the “Buyout Nyls” post
by MetalCap on Nov 7, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Not really, because the Caps would then be on the hook for half his salary (and cap hit) next year, too. In other words, approximately $2.4m of cap hit and no player for each of the next two years. Better than full cap hit and unusable player? Not necessarily, given that he can be waived or bought out after this season.
I can’t envision re-entry waivers for him, since the only upside there would be someone paying half of the $ he’s due (easy to say when it’s not my money, but still). Losing control of that asset is no good, even for the space it would seem to create.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
by J.P. on Nov 7, 2009 2:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The problem would be more next year than this. It’s bad enough carrying Nylander at a full share of a salary cap hit. Next year with half the salary hit? Plus paying a raise to the guys they have to re-sign? This would be one of the deeper circles of salary cap hell.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Nov 7, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If the caps have put him on waivers, which presumably means he’s waived his NMC, then can’t they just bury him in the minors now? Yeah, we don’t want him taking ice time away from our prospects in Hershey. Then again, he could be not playing in Hershey versus not playing here, and a roster slot down there is better than a roster slot up here. Plus the cap hit is gone.
I suppose there’s also the possibility that he could be taking the Shanahan route — i.e. gets assigned to the minors, refuses to report, Caps suspend/release him, he becomes a UFA, and hopes he can find a team interested in his services.

Go further down in McKenzie’s Twitter feed…the back and forth about Forsberg and whether he will sign with someone after the Karjala Cup. He’s been linked to the Caps in the past, and the Caps never utter a peep about such things, but, if room is opened up…

I’d have to start posting nude women or something if we drop Nylander AND pick up Forsberg. Confetti and fireworks wouldn’t cut it.

Only problem is we’d be stuck with a Forsberg contract when he’s on IR. I like Peter and love how he plays the game but I think his body is done.

at this point, I have more faith in Gordon or Fehr, with their wonky health issues, than Foppa making it through the rest of the season.

FWIW on Forsberg, from Kevin Allen’s twitter:
From someone I trust: Forsberg wasn’t good vs. Czechs. He was skillful, but not physical vs. Russia. Forsberg told him foot is OK, not good

Nyls had to agree to this, no?

It appears to be the formality of doing it; Corey says (via a team official) no deal is imminent.

Well, don’t believe anything it until it’s on the transaction wire. Anonymous and possibly meaningless speculation is the ambrosia of the internet.

Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’slosswin
I mean, I guess if you look at it as “we gained two points in the standings, but lost two players along the way,” it could be a loss of sorts.

You know, I was on the “Schultz for Schultz” bandwagon with JP for a while, but that Atlanta Journal-Constitution article on Jeff Schultz meeting Jeff Schultz made me lose a bit of respect for Sarge.

I just met me, and gotta tell ya: Not impressed
I didn’t lose respect for him as a player, but as a person. He seems a bit two-dimensional, the standard jock.

Wow, I didn’t take any of that from that piece. I think in general Schultz is a shy guy, and I think that came through in that “article.” If you’re looking for the standard jock on the team I’m looking at the other first round pick D in 2004.

"I just watched Transformers 2," he said. "That was pretty good."
What about the classics?
"What do you mean?"
The Godfather?
"I actually never saw that?"
…
Books?
"People ask me that all the time. I’m like, why? Why read a book when I can watch TV?"
Maybe it’s just me being a pretentious film major, but that bothers me. I guess I shouldn’t expect more of a professional athlete, but his big goofy ears and modest demeanor made me hope otherwise.

You don’t get tone in print, though. Some things may have been said in jest/tongue in cheek.

Schultz is 23. The Godfather is older than he is. As many hours as you have spent watching film, he’s spent more on the ice, in the gym, and doing his own version of film study. I’m not going to say I would never read if I didn’t have to, but I will say I’d read much much less than I do now (and it would be an entirely different kind of reading). At least he didn’t say his favorite book was Facebook.

Point well taken. I wonder which of the Caps has the best taste in film—Gabby claims he’s a connoisseur.

I had the same take. The Godfather is a great film but I’m not sure it’s fair to expect a 23-year-old pro athlete to have taken the time to watch it and begrudge him for it if he hasn’t.
Look, these guys aren’t renaissance men, they’re hockey players. Schultz has what matters – good personality, good work ethic, and humility.

Have you ever seen the guy do an interview? It’s really rough. I think he’s a really nice guy, just very introverted.
by J.B on Nov 7, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Shy introverted guys do not get good press since they are not comfortable with the media.
For the Caps, our resident introverts are the ones who, when they ever make a mistake, they are castigated really badly and everyone calls for getting rid of them.
Also, I’ve noticed that people born under the sign of Pisces tend to get bad press, as well. They tend to be shy and don’t open up to just anyone. (I myself tend to get along great with those of the Piscean persuasion and have many close friends with that sign.)
