60! He should celebrate with the addition of chocolate to milk.
Also, the LH fail was pretty stark. I was cracking up at Jenkins’ reaction.. he sort of blinks for a second and starts trying to process in his head, like, “..wait, what?” before just trying to get through the segment, like those initial stutters are the gears trying to divide by zero.

For those discussing the Ovechkin hit at hockey wilderness, that thread is still going…

Regarding the goalie for Calder quote — well, there wasn’t any talk in Boston a week ago. Because, you know, if it isn’t happening in Boston, it doesn’t exist. (Alter that statement for any town, any time, as you please.)
The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill.
Boston is insanely provincial when it comes to sports. The only city that is worse is New York. They just can possibly understand how someone on another team might actually be better than one of their players.
Looch isa mahnstah!overpriced, injury prone, and not worth keeping over Phil Kessel!
Fixed that for you
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
I love Looch. I do not love Phil Kessel.

still shaking my head
I just replayed the great sequence in the first period when 8 was knocked down, got up surrounded and kept the play alive, then juked through the defense to get a hard shot off. Had he scored there, it would have been a highlight reel goal for the ages but the individual effort to get into position is what makes me proud to have him on my team.
The man does enjoy him some Bell Center.

Since his playing days were a few years before I was born, and his stats on hockey db don’t show much (he was a defens/ceman, of course), why is Yvon Labre’s number retired? What was his influence on the franchise to earn such an honor?
He’s the original Cap, the first guy selected in the expansion draft, iirc. He also scored the very first Caps goal, served as Captain, and was and remains very devoted to the franchise and the DC area.
Plus he’s a very nice man. He sits in Section 113, second or third row from the top, in the low numbers (left side). Go say hello to him. Not sure if the franchise can/could justify retiring his number based on concrete stats, etc. but it’s a done deal and there you are. Did I dream it or is the new Caps’ retire-your-number “rule” that you have to be in the HHoF to be considered?
I wasn’t criticizing his number being retired, I was genuinely asking what his influence was, since I was too young to really grasp impact in the late 80s and not even born until a few months after he stopped being an assistant in the 83 season.
I only looked to the stats to see if that was a reason why (would have been surprised if it was since I never hear him talked about in historical stat discussions).

22, 23, what’s the difference? Aside from a few screws in the post-operative hand…

This is another one-off jersey number media gaffe for this game. Last night, CSN+ was scrolling the Ovechkin score across the top and it said: Goal-Ovechkin, Assists-Aucoin, Giroux. Someone must have fat-fingered Backstrom’s jersey number and accidentally punched in #20. Or, the junior varsity CSN+ production team may just suck. Or both.
Yeah, I saw that. CSN was clearly in an alternate universe last night. By the way, before anyone thinks it, the captions are provided with the photos, that was not an ESPN fail. I actually saw the photo first on the Caps website, but couldn’t freeze it and knew I could find it at ESPN.

Osala with 2 boarding penalties last night. Can’t say I hate that. Love that he is playing physical and you can’t board a guy you can’t catch (normally).
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Brash actually tried to fight Cooke last night after Cooke threw a (allegedly) dirty hit to Ansimov’s head. The linesmen wouldn’t let it happen. Good on Brash for trying. Boo on Cooke for so many things (yeah he fought later but IMO that doesn’t absolve the trash the is Matt Cooke’s soul). Boo on the linesmen for messing it up. Torts is 100% correct on this one.

Future Commish, I’m hoping you get rid of the instigator penalty.
Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.
Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.
Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.
It’s gone if the hit is dirty or questionable, but still there for hits that are obviously clean, like Sloan’s first hit.

So more of this “In the opinion of the referee” crap? Aw.

No, not really. You have to let guys stick up for teammates so anything questionable you can fight for. It’s only the obviously clean hits that get an instigator. Like Sloan’s hit. Or Armstrong on JVR last night, no reason he should have to fight for that. The presumption should be to allow the fight but in clear cases the ref should call an instigator.

Definitely a dirty hit, he blind sided Anisimov and blatantly jumped to hit him in the head (it obviously wasn’t just physics, as Pronger would say, Anisimov is a lot taller than Cooke). At least the NHL got this one right and suspended him.

So that’s why he was his favorite player.

I’d be thrilled to see MP develop into Daniel Briere, but without the 10 ¢ head. MP’s already shown better judgment in 20 games than Briere has in his career.

Agreed. He also looks to have more of St. Louis’ toughness than Briere does. The closer he gets to either of those guys the happier I’ll be.

Where’s that pic from? It’s fantastic.

I saw that in the game pictures that are on the Caps site or you can get them at ESPN’s (AP) game story.

So instead of writing my business law paper like I was supposed to, I decided to relive the Examiner’s version of OV’s top ten goals. Personally I think the Rangers goal should be on there as well. I’m pretty sure all of OV’s goals are available on YouTube, but here’s a handy list.
Goal #10
9 First career hat trick against Ducks
8 Between the legs – 2009, scores 2 against Wings
7 inside or out – 2009, STL, goal #33 of career
6 the wrister – breaks his nose, scores four (this is the third) against Habs
5 the rebound – against Buffalo, 2007
4 the takedown – against Buffalo, 2008 after being tripped
3 the bank – the Montreal goal, 2009
2 the playoffs – first playoff game-winner against Philly
1 The Goal
I’m really happy he’s on the Capitals. Really happy. Thanks Alex.

Would that have been pre-season? I’m thinking this is his first goal ever.
"Alex Ovechkin makes Chad Johnson look like he's reading the paper."
It says in the description of the video that it was his 4th, and I’m sure that his first (regular season, NHL) goal came at home. Thanks for compiling the videos though!
