Boston, Toronto, Flyers, Rangers – what exciting games to open the season with.

And I really can’t wait for those SE divisional games to begin…uh yeah…

We finish off the season out of the division too. Good scheduling, or boring middle of the year?

I little of both, I guess. Hopefully “boring” means that we win the games we’re supposed to; and as for scheduling, if it at all helps us be to more ready for the playoffs, it’s good.

This feels like the game where the team settles in for the grind of the regular season. Home openers are done, the hyped up matchup with Philly is done…let’s see how they respond. Hopefully not like Pitt last night.

Is my Rangers fan buddy right to hate The Donald? I never did. I thought his Caps roster spot could have been put to better use, but so far that thought has yet to bear out.

But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

by hotdog88gt on Oct 8, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

It’s acceptable to continue your grudge with a new acquisition to your favorite team until they prove themselves worthy of your admiration. Look at Todd Bertuzzi in Detroit. They’re still waiting for him to earn his paycheck and, thus, still hate him.

I don't care how you score goals. Pretty or ugly. The ballet or the bulldozer. However you do it, just do it. And make sure you do it more than the other guys.

by Holt Worth on Oct 8, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve had that argument many a time since July 1st. Personally, I hold grudges forever. But I could at least understand those fans who warm to him after he does some good things (if he ever does).

Jim Schoenfeld told me I wasn’t a “real fan” because you have to “root for the guys wearing the jerseys, not the guy who used to wear the jersey.” I wanted to tell him to have another donut but he is bigger than me and there was no security around to stop him from kicking my ass.

I miss Brash as a Cap. He was incredible in the community and his life story is ridiculous to have gone through. I might not feel like this after tonight but right now I still think the Donald will always have a place in my heart.

Also the guy learned Russian to better communicate with other players. That’s incredible.

Boudreau on what it was like to be a healthy scratch during his playing days: “It’s boring. You work out, go home, do nothing, come to the game. It’s boring, I understand that. There’s not much else you can do. It is what it is. It depends on if you were satisfied just sitting up there, but I was never satisfied. So I was always really frustrated; if you’re a guy that was just happy to be here then it’s not a big deal, but I was never one of those guys.”

If John Erskine keeps getting dressed because BB and GMGM feel like we need an enforcer in the lineup against tough teams, then they may as well just go get a dirt cheap enforcer. Erskine isn’t and enforcer, and deserves a benching after the PHI game (although really, BB failed him but not putting him in positions where he could succeed, one of the biggest jobs of a coach).

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Rob Parker on Oct 8, 2009 6:57 PM EDT reply actions

Erskine’s getting dressed because he’s the best 6th defenseman we have – and because Sloan is playing forward because Erskine probably can’t. And I’m not ready to put Juice out there.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 8, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Erskine has played forward before. Vs. Tampa in the first game after the “hot stick” celebration

by Ovechkin on Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

One game. You need more speed at forward than defense too, according to Sergei Fedorov, and I’m not wanting Erskine at forward.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah you definitely need more speed and jump at F than D. That’s why Fedorov had great defensive stats last season but wasn’t much of a factor on offense.

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Rob Parker on Oct 8, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

You can assert that “Erskine is the best 6th D we have” as though it’s fact, but it’s not. He was by far the worst D in the game against PHI, which deserves a benching on its own. Juice may not have been great but he didn’t suck it up. Sloan was “the best D in training camp” and hasn’t gotten a look. Even if Erskine is the best 6D option we have it’s not by a lot and won’t be the difference between a W and an L.

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Rob Parker on Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe a better phrase is “He’s the 6th best defenseman we have.” Regardless, Sloan may have been great in training camp, and yeah, maybe he deserves a shot, but I don’t think you need to bench Erskine any less than you need to bench Poti.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Gonchar because he was a stooge a few times, and how dare have something that no other sports market uses. Whatever the criteria, who cares? It’s something fun we can do and it doesn’t really do anything but show we appreciated the guys offense but didn’t care fo some d-mistakes he made. It may be dumb, but how different is it from booing Crosby?

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 8, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Because you are booing a guy that played for the Caps and had a lot of success with the Caps. Not because of what he did against the Caps. Gooch gave a lot to the organization and was one of our best players for a long time. He didn’t beg out (publicly at least) and we got some good value back for him.

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

And then he signed for the Penguins. The worst thing he could do to us, in my opinion. I don’t give a damn what he gave us after that. If anything, it’s a point of respect because if he was a crap player who didn’t give us anything, he’d probably never have had it happen.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 8, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t sign with PIT because of us. He’s a pro athlete and that’s where his opportunity was. I honestly don’t see how it could be a point of respect. A point of respect would be to give him a nice ovation when he’s announced at the start then to respectfully cheer against his team the whole game.

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Rob Parker on Oct 8, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said he did. So what? He signed for a rival, and it doesn’t matter what the reason was, to a lot of fans, myself included, screw him. What if the criterion for a whoop was just being the best d-man on the opposing team? Or just on a rival? Because BOOING The other teams best player isn’t exactly a nice ovation.

It’s not wrong to dislike a guy, but to do it because he used to play for your team is silly. I hate just about every other Penguin more than Gooch; I won’t pile on Gooch just cuz he was a Cap. Should we whoop CBo (assuming he is still in the NHL and actually dresses when we play them)?

The way I see it, the whoop has evolved to become a playful jeer for higher profile ex-players… not just HOF ex-cap defensemen.

by superjuan on Oct 8, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

And the whoop is specifically because the guys played for us, not because they played for someone else. Booing an opponent is normal. Booing a guy for what he contributed to your own team is not.

by Rob Parker on Oct 8, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

But you’re not booing him for what he contributed. When we whooped him in DC, it was because he was mucking up the d-zone and giving up turnovers. How dare we remind him of that and poke fun at him. It’s usually playful anyway. I guess I’ll just have to be worse than a flyers fan.

Gonchar was a good player who contributed more to his team than he harmed his team. A guy like Bryan McCabe, who did more to harm his team (Own goal, horrendous giveaways) or a guy who signs with his rival for more cash (Scott Gomez) should get booed

The best two moments I remember regarding Malik:

“When most Rangers fans were asked how many games Malik messed up for the Rangers, the average response was 60 games. Given that Malik has only played in 40 games, this should tell you everything you need to know about Marek Malik.”

And in one game Malik scored the announcers were saying that the fans should warm up to him a bit after that goal, and as he said that you hear the in arena announcement and an arena full of boos after his name was announced.

Ok I’m sorry if you are either slow or just don’t know your Staals. The Staal that Your National’s Capital was referring to Jordan Staal. He plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sending Semin after him would not be really advisable for the Caps, seeing how Jordon Staal is in Philadelphia right now.

Semin fought Marc Stall, who is playing against him right now. Marc Staal has never assisted an Evengi Malkin goal.

by fat_daddyo on Oct 8, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely not Theo’s fault on this one. The blame is squarely on the PP and the coaching staffs player selection/lines.

by Ovechkin on Oct 8, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. He saved at least 6-7 clear cut chances for the rags

by MadDog31 on Oct 8, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

3rd goal was weak. First goal was slightly stoppable, but tough to fault him on a breakaway.

Defense was horrible

"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"

by fat_daddyo on Oct 8, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I couldn’t disagree more. The PP had more or less an off night, but still scored. Coaching staff? Huh?

Can’t kill him for letting in the breakaway and the 2nd goal – Green just let the guy go right by him instead of standing him up. But the back to back 5 hole weakies…jesus. There are dozens of NHL goalies who make the spectacular stops and don’t let both of those in, you can’t use his good saves to justify both of them.

Do we hold the veteran Theodore to a higher standard than Varly or Neuvy? Probably.
Should we? Probably.

They started out hitting close to 50%, so they were due for a correction, and the Rags have a good PP.

Bad effort all around, particularly on the defensive side. Jose wasn’t great, but he made a couple of good saves.

I reckon he starts in Detroit. He ain’t great but he’s better than Varly right now. Defense really needs to tighten it up.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Oct 8, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think that is a bit much. 1 for 9 sucks, but there will /em> be games where we just don’t have it like we usually do. I will say that the number of quality chances generated on those 9 PPs…that was not good.

What is the point of not playing Alzner? He could just as easily be making the same mistakes, and at least there is an upside to it. Sal Cap is not the reason – we could make it work if we really wanted to.

Russian Machine Never Breaks

by macvechkin on Oct 8, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You could use the D quote to ask why Alzner’s not being used, but not the Power Play one. Alzner is not going to play significant time on the power play this year, and may not for several, and wouldn’t even if he was here.

Didn’t take advantage of a ton of power plays.
Defense was marginal, again.
JT let in weak and weaker goals after we wrestled a 3-2 lead in the 3rd, one goal coming from Backstrom on a center ice dump in. That was ultimate weak by Lundy, but it was also kind of fluky weak.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.
