So if that report from Russia is true might we see #92 ‘showcased’ in a few games? That would be odd.

Well that reasoning does provide justification for denying the move, but if the team showcases him only to have Dynamo reject the move, then you’re back at square one, and have possibly burned some game results to boot.

There’s no question about whether or not Nylander fits in BB’s system. Maybe I just don’t have any memory left, but how many games did he really lose for the Caps last year? All of us are painfully aware of the Caps’ salary cap issues.

I guess my question is how much harm could he really do playing 7 minutes?

by Yoshietree on Oct 21, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Probably more good than he could do – at least in the eyes of the coach and GM.

What is to see that wasn’t seen in 70+ games last year? If they said “give him a couple games so we can see he still has legs/vision/whatever,” then I’d breathe deeply and deal with it if there was any chance of moving him.

After reading that, to clarify, I’d do the trial if Moscow was a little more than keen on bringing him on, i.e., it was the next to last thing to do to get him over there.

Not implying you shouldn’t keep linking to these “reports” about Nylander, but I have totally washed my hands on any stories about Nylander and the KHL/Swedish Elite League/Swiss League, etc. I feel like Charlie Brown and Lucy keeps pulling that football back from me. I’m convinced now that Nylander’s not going anywhere this season and until someone shows me video proof of him playing next to Jagr wearing one of those uniform covered with logos, I’m not going to think otherwise. If the Caps are going to get some salary relief it’s going to come by moving someone else on the team, not from Nylander.

The Caps are paying Nylander $5.5m this year. Period. He will either be a $4.875m cap hit to them, or a $0 cap hit. I doubt, at this point, that there’s too much haggling over how much the acquiring club compensates the Caps for his services.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 21, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

then there should be zero risk for a European team to take him on, right? Aside from daily meals and housing? I dunno, there must be some kind of compensation negotiations going on between the Caps and other clubs to cause a stalemate.

Yup, there are. As JP pointed out, the Caps pay his salary, period. If he goes elsewhere, that salary comes off the books, but still gets paid. As much as the Caps would like the cap relief, they can’t just allow themselves to pay the full salary for someone who isn’t playing for them without getting anything in return (note the irony of paying him to sit in the press box). So the negotiations are over what the receiving team will pay the Caps for Nyls’ services. It’s somewhere between $0 and $5.5M. I don’t know where the break point is for Ted — e.g., if a KHL team is offering $3M and Ted won’t let him go for less than $4M.

As much as the Caps would like the cap relief, they can’t just allow themselves to pay the full salary for someone who isn’t playing for them without getting anything in return

I don’t think that’s true because, as J.P. noted, the team’s going to pay him 5.5 million and it’s up to them whether he counts for a roster space and 4.875 million against the cap or counts for $0 against the cap and opens up a roster spot.

At this point I imagine the team’s still trying to see if they can get something back, but I also think they’d let him go on loan for nothing if they had to.

by David Getz on Oct 21, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d think that “the break point” is a downward sloping line/curve with $ on the vertical axis and date on the horizontal – I’d imagine Ted’s willing to take less (percentage-wise) as we get further along.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 21, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ll buy that. The chances of him being loaned for free (as DMG suggests) are much higher right before the trade deadline, when GMGM is begging Ted for the cap room and Ted decides a cup run is worth more to him that whatever money he thought he could get for Nyls’s services.

"Let the rest be scared of us." - Sasha Semin

by Scott in Shaw on Oct 21, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

While Ted would surely like to get something back for Nylander, at this point he’s paying the money for nothing in return (unless he ends up playing tomorrow night). Sure, the idea of another team getting him for free is unpleasant, but it’s not another NHL team. Just do something!

by gfcaps fan on Oct 21, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

And I would look for the “date point” on that curve to where mgt/BB feels that Alzner needs to come up to be fully assimilated with the team come playoff time. Prior to that, the Caps can play the waiting game and try and maximize the offset for Nyls’ salary.

by Fehrskine on Oct 21, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

And if he was playing, they’d cite Nylander’s play for not signing him.

OK, per TJ, the translation:

Nylander’s agent Paul Theofanous did call us on Monday and offered the services of his ward. And he was ready to even postpone the signing of the contract and offered to take Nylander for a monthly tryout.

As far as I know we were not the first in Russia who were offered to look at the veteran; this player has been trying to move to the KHL for the third month already. But Dynamo decided that they don’t need the Swede. We doubt that the hockey player who missed almost all of the last season, could become of real value for the team.

“[M]issed almost all of last season”? He played 72 regular season games. Further, there’s nothing for Nylander’s agent to “postpone signing.” Effing assclown.

Some interesting stuff in the CBC story. High spending teams (which is about everyone, isn’t it?) should be happy if it’s looking like the cap won’t go down by the previously thought $5 million or so. Good news for the Caps, I’d assume.

Another observation from the story — Okay, I’m not a hockey fan from the year one, and I understand why everyone thinks Gretzky deserves special treatment, but as it relates to his coaching contract with Phoenix, I don’t get it. It was a bad contract, bankrupcty generally lets you get out of contracts. Just because the team’s majority owner gave him a sweetheart deal in exchange for his name (because clearly it wasn’t his ability to coach) doesn’t mean the league or a new owner is required to assume the liabiltity. He needs to grow up.

by gfcaps fan on Oct 21, 2009 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

More than that, I think the press needs to grow up. Basically, the only thing Gretzky said was “I want to take a little time.” The entire article is based only on him telling that same thing to anyone who asks.

He’s entitled to a break. It’s been less than a month since he got fired. He’s got more than enough money to take it easy for a bit. Everyone in Toronto needs to quit foaming at the mouth and let it go for a while (fat chance…)

Yeah, I think if he shows up for anything public, he’s going to be peppered with questions about the deal, why didn’t he consider the looming clouds, why didn’t management recommend he step aside, and on and on. Because he may still have stake in whatever happens (and was the face of the franchise), it’s best he stays out of the way so as to not influence anything on it.

It’s a shame, for as much as the guy’s done for the sport, he’s made some abominable business decisions on the back end. Except for the perogies

"It's an incredible place. Every seat feels like it's right on top of you. So can't we just make it official? Every big American soccer game should be played in RFK. We need the home-field advantage. Done and done."

by Bald Pollack on Oct 21, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

My grow up comment has to do with how he’s been characterized throughout the saga, not the present issue of what does he do next. When his contract became a public issue, it was clear to me that no more than half of (it if that much) was being paid for him to coach, the rest was for the intangibles he was supposed to be bringing to the team. He could have softened public sentiment by saying something then, although I’m not sure what would have been appropriate. The silence, however, was deafening, in my opinion.

Dobberhockey is usually better than this

Alexandre Giroux – Hershey Bears. Giroux has been scoring goals at a Bret Hull-like clip over the past two AHL seasons, with 65 goals in Hershey’s last 75 regular season games. He has only had a few brief cups of coffee in the NHL, scoring three goals in 22 games, all but one coming with the Capitals. He has good size (6’3"), and obviously possesses elite goal scoring ability. He notched 60 goals in 2008-09 (and was absolutely white-hot during the Bears Calder Cup-winning run, scoring 15 goals in 22 games), and already has five through six games this season. I am sure there are knocks on him – skating, intensity, grit, and defensive play are the usual negative aspects of failed AHL-to-NHL scoring stars (Giroux’s plodding skating is his biggest weakness). However, he has never really been given a fair sniff at an NHL gig. I know that for every Alex Burrows or Peverley there are dozens similar to Fedor Fedorov and Josef Balej, but Giroux deserves a shot. He is definitely on my radar in all keeper leagues, and should be on yours too. He was passed over this off-season and opted to re-sign with Washington, but he is a UFA next summer.

Keith Aucoin finished second to Giroux in AHL scoring last year (25-71-96). There wasn’t a player closer than 15 assists behind Aucoin, and Aucoin missed 10 AHL regular season games.

Anyone think he should be replacing Brendan Morrison on the second line?

Caps as a team are # 9 in the league in PK, giving up just 6 goals in 39 times shorthanded. I’m not ready to say that any of our killers are doing all that badly right now. This all may be small sample size effects/bad luck. We’ve seen enough from those two guys that we know what they can do.

A little stronger than I’d put it. Unlike Giroux, Aucoin’s actually done something at the NHL level. He hasn’t had much opportunity this season (15:13 TOI overall). I do think Laing is more valuable than Aucoin, but Aucoin ain’t a zero. I’d be fine with him as the team’s 13th forward.

I just think that a good penalty killer is going to end up doing more for you in terms of net goal differential than a borderline NHLer at 3rd/4th line C.

But wouldn’t Laing as a PK forward be more valuable than Sloan? Sloan’s finding it harder to rotate into the starting 6 than Laing is in the Top 12 (granted, 14/16’s injuries have helped his cause, but still). Even if Laing got the requisite 4th line ES time, he’d still be more valuable than Brashear was last year.

If it were March, I’d agree with you. I think the goal was to trade a D-man, in which case having Sloan around gives added flexibility. (Also, he played well enough in preseason to earn a spot on the team, but none of the other D could be sent down because you’d lose them for nothing). That situation had better be sorted out by spring.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here’s a great article on IIHF about how the donk who wrote the book about anti-French bias is super wrong.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

by jordanDC on Oct 21, 2009 9:57 AM EDT reply actions

I thought that article was…not so great myself. First he says “statistics can be manipulated” and uses the example of small sample sizes, but that’s clearly not an issue with the book itself which, by all accounts has been meticulously researched. Then goes on to refute the claims in the book by manipulating statistics. For example:

  • He uses three years of data to suggest there isn’t a bias, a much smaller sample than Sirois, and different criteria – players in the NHL, whereas Sirois looks at not just players in the NHL but the barriers to entry for Quebecois players.
  • He refutes the claim that there’s bias in selecting Canadian junior teams by stating that QMJHL teams haven’t fared that well in the Memorial Cup. But that’s really not all that relevant since that’s a team competition (and a very small, short tournament), and picking players for juniors is based on their individual performance.
  • His story about Guy Hebert is anecdotal and disproves nothing.

He also makes absurd, hyperbole-filled statements like “if you agree with what he says, you are saying ALL NHL general managers and ALL coaches for the last 40 years have systematically and knowingly been prejudiced against francophone Quebeckers” which is absurd because (1) Sirois doesn’t say the prejudice is systematic and perpetrated “knowingly” and (2) he sure as heck doesn’t say every single person in the NHL has it.

So, basically, the article consists of (1) picking and choosing meaningless statistics to make the author’s point after accusing Siros of picking and choosing meaningless statistics without any evidence that he’s done so, (2) putting words in Siros’ mouth, and (3) making ridiculous inferences and implications that Siros didn’t intend and shooting them down.

The whole this is one giant knee-jerk straw-man argument and it’s the worst of the worst when it comes to debate.

That is a good response. I don’t buy Sirois’ argument. Just because there aren’t as many successful Quebecoise in the league does not mean it’s due to bias. With the parity and level of competition in the NHL now I don’t believe for a second that teams are refusing to ice the best team possible because of ethnicity or nationality. But of course it just couldn’t be possible that other ethnic groups are just producing better NHL caliber hockey players than the French Canadians.

I watched the ATL-MON game last night, because I could, and because I wanted to have a look at our opponent in 2 of our next 4. I came away impressed with a few things about the ATL (with appropriate caveat that it’s MTL they were playing). Great game, too.

1) the Thrasher defense is good. Bogosian is strong at both ends of the rink and is going to be a pain in the ass for years. Enstrom doesn’t suck either.

2) the G, Pavelec, was spectacular last night…didn’t seem fazed at all by the rowdiness at the Bell Center. Outstanding glove hand and aggressively challenges the shooter. No rebounds. He had some Hab heads scratching (until the shootout).

3) Evander Kane can play. He sparked ATL’s tying goal and seemed a threat every time he was on the ice. Hal Gill was so impressed he just stood there and watched.

4) I want Colby Armstrong on my team. Bryan Little too.

Keith Aucoin and Jay Beagle both practiced at first-line center Wednesday with the Hershey Bears, and then Aucoin left practice early.

In light of the injury situation in Washington, the guess is that Aucoin was recalled to the Caps. But there was no official confirmation of a transaction in Hershey.

The Caps, according to the Washington Post and Washington Times, may be poised to recall two forwards. If they take two, given his hot start, Alex Giroux would seem a good bet to be a second forward recalled.

As much as it seems Giroux is never going to be an NHL’er, using the Caps rule of like-type players, he’s the Semin replacement (that’s who he was replacing up here last year, right?). Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

Which NHL team is Grand Rapids affiliated with (if any)? Isn’t it, like, Detroit?

by red army line on Oct 21, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Detroit. Pretty good team most of the time. Detroit uses GR like the Caps use Hershey.

True, but irrelevant.

What kind of swedish mind-cluster is This??? Who’d waive Movement to Grand Rapids, for Krejci’s sake?

by redlineblue on Oct 21, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

This.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

by jordanDC on Oct 21, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe there’s a big Swedish community there?

by red army line on Oct 22, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

So, for starters.. if he is assigned there, his cap comes off the books for the caps… so even if this doesn’t result in a trade we’re still headed in the right direction right?

Though I can’t imagine him waiving his NMC without something in the works…

by JustJeff on Oct 21, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

A conditioning assigment is limited in duration.

by J.P. on Oct 21, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

ahhh, did not know that… would it also not require him to wave his NMC then?

by JustJeff on Oct 21, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

He does have to consent to the move – any player has to in a conditioning stint, regardless of a no-move clause.

He does still count against the cap (and the 23-man roster).

He can be there max. two weeks.

There is, of course, the question of why he’d need a conditioning assignment.

Nylander has NOT been traded. The veteran center, who has not suited up since being used sparingly in the playoffs, simply has agreed to Griffins to get some game action without taking any ice time away from the Capitals’ prospects in Hershey.

How Nylander performs could determine what happens next. There has been a little interest from some KHL teams, but those clubs have also expressed concern about Nylander’s conditioning and ability to come in and contribute since it’s been so long since his last game. This is Nylander’s chance to prove he can still play, and perhaps, facilitate a trade.

The 37-year-old, by the way, did not have to clear waivers in order to be sent to Grand Rapids. He also still counts toward towards the Capitals’ 23-man roster and his salary still counts against Washington’s salary cap.

by RedBirdie on Oct 21, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

In other news, Patrick Thoresen’s balls have taken less impact than Michael Nylander’s just did.

He had to waive his NMC, so he knew. And I can’t imagine GMGM treating him with anything less than professional courtesy.

Of course he wouldn’t call him a douchebag.

Didn’t you post earlier that he would NOT have to waive his NMC for conditioning?

by jordanDC on Oct 21, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think so – he definitely does. In fact, any player has to agree to a conditioning assignment, whether they have an NMC or not.

by jordanDC on Oct 21, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not a “movement.” Movement would be a permanent assignment. So only the conditioning clause applies (Nylander, like every other player, has to approve it) — the NMC doesn’t apply. It will apply if and when the Caps put him on waivers before loaning him out to a European team, and Nylander will have to approve that.

While Puck Daddy’s commenters take up space, I’m fond of Wysh bringing the snark. About players out due to illness (including Semin):

With H1N1, the NHL may need to make coughing on an opponent a roughing minor.

Actually, that’s just for breathing on him. Coughing would be a five minute major in that case.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
