Ovechkin Named Player Of The Week

Per CBC.ca:

"Washington Capitals left-winger Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL's first star of the week on Monday.

"The Russian sniper tallied five goals and one assist last week, including three points (two goals, one assist) as Washington overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat the New York Rangers 5-4 in overtime on Dec. 23.

"Ovechkin also scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Dec. 26 and recorded a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Capitals defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 Dec. 28.

"Ovechkin has 44 points (23 goals, 21 assists) in his past 28 games. He ranks second in NHL scoring with 49 points (25 goals, 24 assists) in 35 games."

Does anybody subscribe to THN as an emag? Good or bad experience?

by ChrisAm on Dec 29, 2008 11:57 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

As dead tree media go, THN isn’t bad. As you might expect from a Toronto-based publication, there is a pro-Canadian slant, but it falls far short of Don Cherry jingoism. (But then, everything falls short of that.) I think it provides a great weekly overview of North American hockey, with capsule reports from each NHL team and coverage of the Canadian junior leagues and the U.S. college and minor leagues. It’s annual draft issue is also worthwhile. Downsides: delivery (at least for me; issues are sometimes inexplicably delayed) and far too many covers featuring Ms. Crosby.

“Russian sniper?” Isn’t AO a bit more than that? (Though last night was arguably his worst, most indifferent defensive game in weeks.)

TSN Rankings

This is unrelated……but can someone explain to me how a team that has won 8 out of 9 games can drop from 7th last week, to 14th this week in the TSN.ca power rankings? I understand rankings have no bearing on ANYTHING, but despite that, it’s frustrating to see the complete lack of respect this team receives from TSN.ca.

by thecapsfan79 on Dec 29, 2008 12:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Those of you wishing to get fired up can read the rationale…..it’s actually comical. TSN has the NYR, Pen, Ducks, Canucks, etc ahead of the Caps. Heck, we’re one spot ahead of the Panthers, clawing at our heels. He who laughs last…….

simple…tsn.ca hates the fact that Red Jesus (h/t JP-frickin awesome nick) has completely eclipsed their favorite son S. Crosby as the best player in the game. Hell, Crosby isn’t even the best player on his own team.

I say let’em disrespect us all the way to June.

Agreed (and the Caps are darlings elsewhere in other power rankings, so it’s good that someone knocks ’em down a peg).

And Red Jesus is a rip off of Adrian “Purple Jesus” Peterson. Awesome nonetheless.

“Red Jesus” requires a Photoshop. sadly, my Photoshop-enabled box is down.
(I should fix it sometime soon.)

Which other power rankings are you referring to, JP?

The ones I include in my Roundups every Tuesday and Wednesday. There’ll be some tomorrow.

+1

If they want to diss us and blow us off, I say let it be. It fires our boys up when they prove people wrong, and we the fans could make a killing at the betting table. :)

never got the full story on what happened with Malkin’s agent, but apparently OV and said agent got into it over the summer…anyone know more details?

How much you want to bet a girl is involved?

Ovi is the bigger man. Pure and simple. End of conversation.

i think it was two summers ago

by Sombrero Guy on Dec 29, 2008 3:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

From what has been bandied about, a couple of summers ago- didn’t AO supposedly punch Malkin’s agent (no clue what over), AO denied it, Malkin at some point said that it was true. Based on this latest interview, it seems then AO got pissed that Malkin said it was true, but now AO’s over it and they are just competitors on ice and all is well and happy.

by Ames on Dec 29, 2008 3:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Somehow, I have a feeling that Ovie is still going to run Malkin at every opportunity in the next game.

by grapejoos on Dec 29, 2008 3:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And Malkin does a Family Circus impression.

“MOMMY! ALEX IS PICKING ON ME!”

(damn it, now I’m seeing a Penguins/Caps game in Family Circus cartoon style.)

Ovi All Star ad

anyone seen the “Bonjour Alex” commercial they are running on Versus? awesome. its a black and white slow-mo clip of his puck juggling penalty shot from last yr – they flash “Bonjour Alex” and then “Bienvenue à Montréal”

Speaking of videos . . .

(and to change the subject entirely) in this group of pix from the making of the pregame video —> http://capitals.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=MediaGalleryPlayer&galleryId=7882‘);
there is a Caps’ player (I assume who played in the "band") with a green tee on. See especially the pic of them all in that Caddy.

Who the heck is that guy?

Sadly, a glammed-out Alex Semin.

If someone else wants it, they gotta earn it.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
