UPDATE: The Capitals have confirmed the new six-year, $35.1M deal for Thompson.

Per Elliotte Friedman, the Capitals are close to re-signing netminder Logan Thompson to a contract extension:

There’s no question that Logan Thompson has been the key to at least some of the team’s success this season – and certainly their success over the last month or so. To wit, here are Thompson’s numbers since 12/22:

The market value of goalies has also continued to trend upward, and you can see similarities in this deal to the one recently signed by Mackenzie Blackwood in Colorado (5 years, $5.25M AAV) – and one would guess the Capitals are expecting the salary cap to continue to go up next year and beyond.

What this means for the team’s cap situation overall, and its impact on any potential new deals for Thompson’s netminding partner, Charlie Lindgren, remains to be seen.

We’ll have more as it becomes available…thoughts?
