Gr8 Memories: The Goat and Game Over

Remembering the night Ovechkin’s four points fueled a wild OT win.

We don’t know whether this will be Alex Ovechkin’s final season as a Washington Capital or not, but there’s never a bad time to reflect back on two decades of being treated to this amazing talent. So each game day throughout the 2025-26 season, we’re going to be picking an Ovechkin moment to remember against that day’s opponent as we look back at an incredible career.

A Four-Point Night – January 28, 2014

There may not have been any milestones in sight on this chilly January evening in western New York, but it was kind of a classic “Alex Ovechkin cannot be stopped” kind of evening (with a little “and neither can Mike Green” thrown in for good measure).

The Caps arrived in Buffalo mired in a seven-game losing streak (0-5-2) and were desperate for any kind of spark. They got one almost immediately, as the captain opened the scoring on the power play less than four minutes in – then added another goal at even strength just 53 seconds later to put the Caps up 2-0. Well…technically his leg scored the goal, as Green’s shot deflected in off of Ovechkin for the two-goal lead. But they all count!

Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Caps struggled to hang on and let Buffalo tie the game not once, not twice, but three separate times before finally getting the win in overtime. Ovechkin added an assist on the go-ahead goal to make it 4-3, but it was his pass to set up Mike “Game Over” Green that capped off the four-point evening and brought home the two points.

“Oh, he screamed so loud, but I knew he was out there. I gave him the pass. It was a little bit forward but it was good for him. It was good for our team. He reached it and put it in.”

“I knew that I would either have a rebound and hopefully pop it in or if Alex heard me — he made a great play. I know it’s tough for him not to shoot that puck, but what an unselfish play that was.”
