Gr8 Memories: A Wild Night

Remembering the night Ovechkin put up a two-spot against the Wild

We don’t know whether this will be Alex Ovechkin’s final season as a Washington Capital or not, but there’s never a bad time to reflect back on two decades of being treated to this amazing talent. So each game day throughout the 2025-26 season, we’re going to be picking an Ovechkin moment to remember against that day’s opponent!

Two goals, three points – March 3, 2020

Alex Ovechkin hasn’t had a ton of memorable moments over the years against the Minnesota Wild – or opportunities to have them – but not every game can be a milestone moment (even when sometimes it feels like it’s the case with #8) and looking back at an “average” game for Ovechkin can be something almost as special.

In this case, it was a three-point night in St. Paul for the Caps’ captain, with two goals that were quintessentially Ovechkin (both in the first period) and an unselfish assist on the eventual game-winner en route to the team’s 4-3 victory.

Here’s more from the game write-up in the Post:

Ovechkin’s first goal came at 7:21 from his “office” in the left faceoff circle on a five-on-three power play. The Capitals had failed to generate many chances before Ovechkin’s snipe whizzed past Wild goaltender Alex Stalock (26 saves), but his goal was enough to start Washington’s push.

About three minutes later, the Capitals took control with two goals in 31 seconds. Richard Panik scored off the rush at 10:28, his eighth goal of the season. Then, off a tic-tac-toe pass from Ilya Kovalchuk to Kuznetsov to Ovechkin, the captain scored again at 10:59. That gave the Capitals three goals in 3:38 and provided Kovalchuk’s first point with the team.

Alex Ovechkin scores twice in a wild first period, and the Capitals hold off Minnesota, 4-3
