We don’t know whether this will be Alex Ovechkin’s final season as a Washington Capital or not, but there’s never a bad time to reflect back on two decades of being treated to this amazing talent. So each game day throughout the 2025-26 season, we’re going to be picking an Ovechkin moment to remember against that day’s opponent!
A Four-Point Night – October 22, 2018
A few weeks after raising their Stanley Cup banner, the Capitals hit the road for a trip out west, starting in Vancouver. It was a good start to the trip for the boys, as they took care of business with a 5-2 win – and four of those goals were either scored by or assisted on by Alex Ovechkin, as he finished the night with two goals and two helpers.
Just the 27th time in his career (to that point) that he scored at least four points in a game, ho hum.
His first goal was a nice deflection in front of the net, but it was the second tally that was special, for two reasons. First, it was his classic power-play goal from the office, proving once again (as he had many times before and would many times after) that it doesn’t matter if goalies know he’s shooting from there; they still can’t stop it. Second, and more importantly, was the fact that it came off a Nicklas Backstrom helper – Backstrom’s 600th assist of his career, the first Capitals’ player to hit that mark.

Here’s a look at the game highlights:
