Capitals vs. Canadiens Recap: Late Comeback, Early OT Goals in Caps’ 3-2 Loss

Plus: Alex Ovechkin had some great moments and some absolutely awful puck luck tonight. Great awareness by the captain, then, to fake out Jake Allen and thread a pass across to Dylan Strome for the Caps’ late third-period tally – knowing that perhaps tonight isn’t your night for goals, and that the goalie will still expect you to shoot, is a great way to gift your teammate a wide-open net.
Minus: So many penalties. So many. Some deserved, others…well, maybe not so much. Either way, the Caps cannot continue a constant march to the penalty box, especially when the penalty kill has been as rough out of the gate as it has been.

Key Moment:

Just all of this.

Caps’ Player of the Game: Dylan Strome comes in huge with his first two goals of the season, getting to exactly the right spot at the exact right time not once but twice to tie this game up late.

Final Thoughts

So the penalties were bad. The fourth-consecutive 2-0 deficit was bad. And of course, losing isn’t ideal. Outside of that, the Caps looked slightly better in this one, albeit still not great. Great job by Strome to basically will the Caps to a badly needed point, and decent performances from some of the team’s other big names (including Alex Ovechkin, who snapped that nasty shotless streak with a purpose).

Things like the shoddy line change in overtime that led to the Habs’ game-winning goal are going to happen with a new coach, new system, etc. so just this once we’ll let that slide…once, got it, Caps?

Take the point and come on home.
