The Charts:

The Key Stat: Andrew Mangiapane finished this season with a CF% of 55.07, the fourth-best CF% of his eight-year career. More notably, this was fifth-best on the entire team, despite averaging the ninth-lowest TOI per game (13:02) among Capitals who played at least 10 games.
The Good: The Washington Capitals brought Andrew Mangiapane in last summer to add some depth scoring to their lineup, and that’s exactly what he provided—he had 28 points (14G, 14A) through 81 games. Mangiapane skated primarily on the third line with Lars Eller and various wingers, but Coach Carbery could confidently move him up and down the lineup if someone else was out. This versatility made him an even more valuable offseason addition to the roster.
One surprising thing Mangiapane brought to the lineup: some pretty solid defensive play.

The Bad: While Mangiapane did bring depth scoring to the Washington lineup, he definitely took an offensive step back this season. His 28 points was his lowest single-season total since 2018-2019 when he had 13 points in 44 games with the Calgary Flames. To be fair, his production on offense had been tapering off slightly over the last few seasons: 55 points (and 35 goals!) in 2021-2022, then 43 points in 2022-2023, then 40 points last season. However, a jump from 43 to 40 is very different from the jump from 40 to 28 that he took this year. Part of that can certainly be attributed to his usage and him having a different role in the Washington lineup, but his production was probably a bit lower than the front office was hoping for when they traded for him last summer.

The Discussion: Do you hope to see Mangiapane return to the Washington lineup next season? If so, who do you see as his ideal linemates? Do you think Mangiapane’s drop in offensive production was on him or a product of his usage? Finally, what would it take for you to give Mangiapane a 10 next season?
The Vote: Rate Andrew Mangiapane below on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) based on his performance relative to his potential and your expectations for the season – so if he had the best year you could have imagined him having, give him a 10; if he more or less played as you expected he would, give him a 5 or a 6; if he had the worst year you could have imagined him having, give him a 1.
