The Noon Number: Empty Gestures

A look at a couple of no-goalie goals for the Caps

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

6 - Number of times the Caps have scored more than one empty-net goal in a game, dating back to the 1999-2000 season (i.e. when the NHL first started tracking player data on empty-netters). Last night was their first game with a pair of ENGs since dinging Detroit for two back in November of 2019, and their first time scoring two empty-net goals on the Penguins this century.

With his helpers on Lars Eller’s empty-net goal last night, Nicklas Backstrom now has 33 assists on empty-netters - the all-time leader* in that department. His teammate Alex Ovechkin is also up near the top of the empty-net leaderboard, ranking third all-time* with 39 goals, one behind second-place Marian Hossa and just 17 back of Wayne Gretzky.
