The Noon Number: Faceoff Frustration

38.3 – The Capitals’ faceoff win percentage against the Penguins last game, their second-lowest percentage of the season and their third-worst win percentage vs. Pittsburgh over the last 15 seasons. Incidentally, the lowest percentage of the season (and second-lowest since 2005-06)? Also against the Penguins, this season, in Game 2 of the season series back in January.

In Sunday afternoon’s loss to the Penguins, the Caps won just 23 of the 60 draws taken – with Nicklas Backstrom taking the biggest hit, going 2-for-16 on the day (a hearty 13% success rate). In fact, in the three games against Pittsburgh this season, Backstrom has won a grand total of 11 faceoffs out of the 48 he’s taken – just 22.9% overall – and has gone 4-for-32 in the last two.
