2019-20 Rink Wrap: Jonas Siegenthaler

Regular Season:

Playoffs:

Key Stat: Siegenthaler spent the most time on the penalty kill than any other Capitals player by almost 30 minutes and averaged 3:10 a game, which was 12th in the whole league. Jonas is essentially a rookie, so for him to get that kind of trust and ice time while shorthanded is a good sign.

The Good: Nowadays when you hear the term “defensive defenseman” it usually means they suck and are caught in their own zone all the time. Siegenthaler is one of those rare defensive defensemen that actually helps his team. Over the past two seasons combined (90 games), Siegenthaler ranks 97th percentile in expected goals against relative to teammates. That’s some elite stuff and he’s just 23 years old.

The Bad: Jonas has a problem staying out of the box. His 43 penalty minutes were fourth on the team and first among defensemen. He can’t help the penalty kill if he’s the one in the box. He is young so lots of the penalties are him just trying to learn and adjust, so it’s forgivable for now.

The Discussion: Can Siegenthaler bring his high end defensive play even while playing bigger minutes? Or is he just the product of easy deployment? Can he stay out of the box? Will he be able to cement his position on the team among so many vets? Will he be able to add a little offense to his game? Finally, what would it take for you to give Siegenthaler a 10 next season?
