2019-20 Rink Wrap: Carl Hagelin

Regular Season:

Playoffs:

Key Stat: Despite signing a contract extension at the end of last offseason, Hagelin had a career low in average ice time per 60, averaging only 14:19 a game.

The Good: Despite a career low in ice time, Hagelin remains one of the Caps better possession players. Hagelin’s 53.96% shot attempts for percentage was one of the highest on the team, and the Caps outscored their opponents on the ice at 5v5 when Hagelin played. Hagelin was also a prolific penalty killer, as his 164:48 of penalty time killed was highest among Caps forwards.

The Bad: Hagelin’s offensive decline continued unabated in 2019-20. He has failed to score more than 10 goals in each of the last 4 seasons, and only recorded 8 goals this year. Hagelin was also extremely quiet in the playoffs, only netting one assist while recording a -4 and skating only 12:40 a night.

The Video: Finding a Carl Hagelin highlight is…challenging. Here’s a somewhat-pretty shot against the Rangers from March 5, though!

The Charts:

The Discussion: Although Hagelin’s days as an offensive contributor appear numbered, he still was a useful player for the Caps, particularly on the PK. Seeing that he’s going to be a Cap for awhile, what will Hagelin’s role look like? Is there a way he can be better used by an incoming head coach?
