A look at how the Caps’ captain really needs to shoot the puck more...

0 - Number of shots on goal for Alex Ovechkin in Saturday’s win over the Penguins. That marks just the 15th time in Ovechkin’s career in which he was held without a single shot on goal, and the first time it’s happened against Pittsburgh. In fact, only 12 teams have managed to keep him quiet for 60 minutes over the course of his career (with Carolina, Detroit, and New Jersey the only ones to have done it twice).

The good news, of course, is that you can never keep Alex Ovechkin quiet for very long. He’s never gone two consecutive games without a shot on goal, and he actually averages almost a shot more per game following a shotless outing, going from a career average of 4.8 shots per game up to 5.6 in those games after missing the net. He also tends to do more than just get the puck on net — in those 14 games that came after a shotless game, he’s a combined 6-6-12.
