The Noon Number: Waiting for 700

5 – Number of consecutive games without a goal for Alex Ovechkin, his longest goalless drought in over a year dating back to a six-game slide from December 19-31, 2019. This is just the fourth time in his last three seasons that he’s gone at least five games without a goal.

Of course, he’s not going to be kept silent forever — in fact, he’s only gone longer than five games between goals 14 times over the course of his long and storied career. Seven of those droughts (including his last two, December 2018 and November 2017) stopped at six games. He’s had three stretches of seven games without a goal; he’s also gone eight goalless games just once and nine games twice. The longest drought of his career was a ten-game run in February/March of 2017.

And it turns out that experiencing a bit of a lag before cracking the 700-goal mark is hardly unusual for the game’s elite group of goal-scorers (including the Great One himself):

And so we wait.
