It was a high intensity first stanza between the bitter Metropolitan division rivals and it took until the final 33 seconds for either team to crack — it was Jakob Vrana who gave the Capitals the 1-0 lead over the Penguins on an odd-man break at the end of a long Pittsburgh shift. For Vrana, it was his 20th goal of the year, which capped off a strong “road” first period for Washington.
